  • Today, on World Mangrove Day (26 July), we highlight the vital role of the Rufiji Delta's mangroves in Tanzania, which cover 50,000 hectares and support the livelihoods of local communities. This unique ecosystem is facing challenges like habitat degradation from overexploitation, pollution and climate change impacts.
To address these challenges, a project aimed at enhancing the resilience and sustainability of these mangrove habitats was implemented with the goals of developing participatory harvesting guidelines and a collaborative restoration strategy, involving local communities and authorities. The Nairobi Convention GEF-funded WIOSAP project strives to reduce land-based stresses in the Western Indian Ocean region by protecting critical habitats, improving water quality, and managing river flows.
This initiative has been managed by the Institute of Marine Science, Tanzania Forestry Services, and Kibiti District Council, with active involvement from local communities.
