Armored Warrior guards that bridge because anyone who passes through could trivialize the monks’ work of achieving immortality, which the warrior sees as a means of curing his sick son who is going to die without said immortality. The firecrackers are sold as a means of funding their travels when they arrived from Portugal (or Spain, but i’m pretty sure it’s Portugal). What the Armored Warrior doesn’t know is that his son is likely just another life lost in the trials of them trying to experiment with the rejuvenating waters and he guards the bridge to no avail.
