      I do think it's a small, but regrettable omission, to not give Garek a chance to be taken aback by the heel-face-turn of Sisko. "I thought humans of... /your/ type of character didn't do this sort of thing?" Something to that effect. Drawing an even finer point on the 'Eddington is forcing Starfleet to behave Cardassian in his quest to destroy Cardassians' commentary. The "poisons Cardi's only" thing really was a minor bit of lazy writing, trying to make Eddington seem rational...but they apparently forgot that terrorists are inherently hypocritical and lacking in introspection --there was no need to polish his morality for Sisko's arc to work.

      Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

      @@tombarnett937 It is a plot contrivance to have these weird things that only hurt cardis or humans, but Eddington is a great example of the Federation's "everyone wins because I'm so smart" attitude. He thinks that not only are his attacks completely justified, but also that they have created a landscape where (once completed) no-one can ever challenge the status quo again. It's like he thought so long and so hard to come up with his perfect solution and no-one would do anything he didn't expect. And that's the hubris of the Federation right there. Using amazing science to solve problems and then being shocked that someone comes along and smacks them right in the mouth.

    Sisko is unable to remain professional when Eddington is involved. It's very personal for Sisko and what he really hates is that Eddington was completely right. Sisko was the villain everytime Eddington showed up.

    • @tombarnett937
      @tombarnett937 3 місяці тому +8

      But only because Eddington made him into one...that's kinda the point. Sisko turns the tables by willfully playing the part, and ends a genocidal spree that would have claimed countless more lives and likely conflagrated into a regional conflict. It proves that Sisko /wasn't/ a villain, and Eddington only got as far as he did because his fellow duelist was being merciful in the hopes Eddington would relent, believing him to not be a true villain. Sisko got serious the instant Eddington showed himself to be implacably ruthless, and ended the fight.

  • @TheMajorActual
    @TheMajorActual 3 місяці тому +16

    Actually - and this is something I did not realize until watching Classic Trek again - Sisko did not commit a crime, according to Starfleet. Why? _General Order 24,_ which gives Starfleet officers the authority to destroy all life on a planet...And that wasn't a one-off, because it was referenced in two separate episodes, _Whom Gods Destroy_ and _A Taste of Armageddon_ .....Sisko is still a villain who got away with it, though, because he did it for personal revenge rather than operational concerns, and Eddington - while still a mutineer and criminal - was not wrong in his monologue to Sisko about the Federation vs the Borg.
    EDIT: I knew it was G/O 24 when I wrote this, but I keyslipped, and typed "34" instead of "24". Thanks to @Reiman33 for the correction. 👍

    • @Reiman33
      @Reiman33 3 місяці тому +3

      that seems to be a very very loose interpretation of Starfleet General Order 34.
      General Order 34
      All Starfleet personnel and/or Federation civilian contractors shall follow a superior's order to the best of their ability, unless said orders should conflict with the regulation laid out in these orders.
      I think you may have meant General Order 24. Even then, this is pretty loose as the Maqui were humans.
      General Order 24
      If a commanding officer deems that a planet has been culturally contaminated to a point where correction is no longer viable and said culture now poses a direct threat to Starfleet personnel or Federation civilians, he may order the destruction of a planet’s surface to occur within a time limit set upon invocation.
      A morally bankrupt federation defense attorney could argue the planet itself was contaminated by maqui "culture" and said culture is a direct threat to the federation in creed. But it clearly violates the spirit of the order.

    In the Pale Moonlight is a better episode as Garak elevates every one he is in and Garak makes a better foil as a devil on Sisko’s shoulder than does eddington as the revolutionary larper with literal main character syndrome, but this is the second best Sisko episode in the series.

    Just want to point out that the magic poison does affect _some_ Humans but majoritively not. Think of it like certain pesticides that are mostly harmless to Humans but are of course deadly to bugs and insects. However, the writer seems to have forgotten that not all members of the Maquis are Human since there was a Bolian on VOY and some are Bajoran. And that’s not counting half-Klingon B’Elanna Torres.

    The thing about sisko kinda getting a pass with the warcrime thing here is that he ended up pretty much just defusing the whole situation by trading planets with the cardies. Eddington gassed a planet with anti-cardie juice, sisko did one with anti-human juice, so the entire incident is a wash.

    • @marley7868

      true but let's remember the cardassians were obviously gonna start yet another war asap and unlike the klingons who at least believe in some proper rules of engagement (hell the only time I think they've ever even planned on blowing up planets was when they thought the federation was gonna do it first ) the cardassians are basically a race of war criminals and should be shown no mercy

    I agree with the point about Avery Brooks not getting enough work. Imagine giving him something like *flail* Felix Leiter, the CIA spook from the Bond franchise. Or make him one of the officers in a faithful Starship Troopers adaptation. Something where his intensity and gravitas would not just dominate but fucking PIMP HAND the screen.
    Also, my one criticism of the episode is that because of the difference in reactions, it doesn't really feel like the Maquis using bioweapons is AS serious as Sisko doing it. I know there's this feeling that Sisko is going too far that they wanted to sell, but I think it would've been more impactful if we really felt that Eddington was ALSO a fucking war criminal and terrorist at this time.

    Picard as a Captain is in third place for me. Sisko is a bad-ass, focused on results while trying to stay on the right side of morality if possible, which ranks second for me, while Kirk is in my 1 spot as he tries to punch and fuck his way across the universe while killing any alien computer he comes across.

    • @marley7868
      @marley7868 3 місяці тому

      yeah I find kirk more consistent cause let's be frank here sisko just pulled a tantrum at the end here and flipped the table
      kirk would have just laid a trap for him since let's be real tracking him isn't that hard it's obviuous where he's gonna target
