- In 2010 a devastating new plant disease called myrtle rust was detected in Australia. It has since spread up and down the east coast and across to the Kimberley. It has established in a wide range of environments - rainforests, heathlands, woodlands and wetlands. It threatens hundreds of species in Australia’s iconic Myrtaceae family. At least 350 have proven susceptible so far.
In this episode of Aliens Among Us, we are joined by Dr Brett Summerell, plant pathologist and the Chief Scientist & Director of Science, Education and Conservation at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney. He has professor roles with 3 universities and is an international authority on plant diseases and their impact on plant conservation.
