If You put a few drops of gasoline through the sparkplug port and the engines fires but only runs for a second the problem is fuel starvation....95% of the time it is the pickup jet inside the carburetor bowl, flip the genny so it stands on the 2 rubber feet at the rear and unscrew the carburetor bowl with a 10mm socket or wrench....Once the bowl is off You will see a tiny brass jet....carefully unscrew the jet and clean it out with a thin wire....these jets builds up scale and a rubbery residue over night......Put it back and You will be in business....Don't muck about with sparkplugs ( gap is .020) and coils and so on , just fix the jet and You will be OK!

Think I may need to do that with mine. I use it only a few times a year when we go camping. I accidentally left fuel in it and haven't started it since the summer. Tried starting it recently, wouldn't fire up. Fuel probably gummed up the jet.

It's more than likely that the new foam you used in the air filter has caused the fuel mixture to be over rich and foul the spark plug.

I agree with your analysis that the cold and altitude were the likely causes of the start / run problems for several reasons involving fuel flow, combustion, and air density. I think spark plug is least likely issue. Years ago I read that spark plugs on magneto systems rarely wear out. Most of my engines have their original plugs; some are 40 years old.

I have the red and black one that was sold a couple of years ago. Mine is difficult to start if the engine is cold. The real problem is a two cycle engine doesn't create a whole lot of vacuum and it has an updraft carburetor. After pulling it 8 to 15 times on choke, mine starts up and runs great. It starts on the first or second pull the rest of the day. I've heard people changing the spark plug first thing. I've done nothing to mine except look and see if the choke was working properly. I'm really considering a primer of some sort for the carburetor.

I took off my pull cover. I use a socket on a drill and start it that way. A year ago mine kept dying. I changed the coil and lead spark plug wire. Apparently, they go bad probably due to heat on top of the engine. I wrapped my spark plug wire in foil insulating mating before reassembly. I've had mine for years and still runs after that wire changeout.

I wore out my little Genny too-
    I didn't keep her clean & lubricated,
so I kicked her to the curb.
A strange old man with white hair & an Ahab beard
came in the middle of the night and took her away.
I heard he likes to fix stuff on that UA-cam thing.

#1 I keep a pair of extra plugs. New Plugs #2 I had a problem with the coil. (Cheep chines coil) Swapping to a "v" power coil. Worked verry good. #3 autolite plugs work well for me. #4 I set mine near the heat stove. (Not too close) . And she's ready to go.

Fuel filter could be dirty its in the gas tank, carburetor and jets could need cleaned and blown out. The fuel filter in the gas tank. You access it by draining the tank. Take it off the unit, remove the fuel shut off valve. The filter is attached to the top of the valve. Its easy to clean with carburetor cleaner. I would check this first. Mine was filthy...Good luck !

I just bought one of these today. Went to the auto parts store
immediately to get an NGK plug. Crazy thing is the plug that's in it is a
Torch F7TC and the manual says it takes an F5TC. NGK BP7ES and BP5ES
respectively. So...what the heck do I put in it? 5 or 7? Any
    suggestions?

I purchased the same unit in July 2019. Used it for one summer event to run two box fans. The generator started right up, no issues the next day and it ran 6 to 8 hours with no problems. I turned the fuel off and let it run till it ran out of fuel. Left it sit a couple of months and then wanted ot start it again due to the "start every three months" warning sticker. Attempted to start and nothing. Removed the plug, poured a little fuel in ontop of the piston, reinstalled plug and it started right up and had no issues. Turned fuel off to let it run out and shut down. Left is sit another month, tried to start again and nothing. Purchased an NGK plug as others suggested, attempted to start, and nothing. Remived plug, it was wet, had spark, but no start. Again, primed the top of the piston with fuel and it started up and ran with no issues. What am I missing here? I wish I didn't have to remve the plug to add fuel and as mentioned to get it running. Many thanks in advance.

Just to make sure I'm not overlooking anything, did you remember to flip the choke lever? If so it sounds like it could be air/fuel related problem. You might have a pinched fuel line or restriction in the carb jets.

Dont run the generator with the fuel off. The only lubrication the crank and piston get is the oil in the gas. You're causing premature wear.

@@kkrankie So, in an effort to try all that I could, I purchased a can of pre-mix 50:1 from Lowes. I poured that in the tank and it started right up! Retested a few days later, and it started up without issues. I have used the same fuel that I mixed in my trimmer and it worked fine, no start up issues, so it's quite the puzzle since the generator does not like it.

    • @TheHandsOnChannel

This doesn't have oil to change like a four stroke. With two stroke engines you mix the oil into the gas and that's all you have to do.

    • @coltwinchester6124

Run Echo Red Armor two cycle oil at 50:1 to get rid of dirty spark plugs. I used to run Stihl Ultra at 40:1 but I have switched over to Red Armor. That Ultra is filthy - to much ash component. I will never run a two cycle oil that is not JASO FD rated, again. None of my two cycle engines smoke like a coal fired locomotive, any more.

Those torch plugs are absolute junk literally every chinese engine that has one will quit running because the failed ive seen them fail in under 5 minutes (thats no exaggeration ) ive seen them last about 80 hours as well in 4 stroke engines the 80 hour plug was in a pressure washer since this happened
I immediately change the plugs when i buy an engine the last chinese plug that failed on me was actually in a minibike i had to push it home after getting the bike home and changing the plug there was no visble signs of running rich or lean no ecessive oil or anything to alert me to other problems leading to the failure so i determined that the plug failed due to low quality materials used in manufacturing
