Tbh the ultimate controller disappointed me, for whatever reason the 2.4ghz only works on 2.0 usb ports, having faulty connection if its 3.0. The controller constantly disconnects and it’s frustrating because it’s a fine controller when it works. Also the hall sensor sticks losses accuracy as the battery goes down, so when I push all the way forward at around 80% it’ll only go 95% forward even if physically I’m pushing all the way

I have an enormous amount of trust in your controller reviews, from the ergonomics and price standpoints, as well as longevity. You also do a great job of summarising who a device is best for (including spreadsheets). Someone on Reddit was asking about 8bitdo vs xbox controllers and I was really shocked to learn that no one on youtube has done a controller roundup of the "well regarded" game controllers. Today, the "market" has a number of established players, such as XBox, Playstation, and Nintendo, but a number of well regarded alternatives, such as gulikit, 8bitdo, gamesir, etc. If I had a low-budget genie I'd definitely ask him to ask you to do a massive controller roundup. Ideally the genie would ask "Hey Russ do you want to do a crazy controller roundup video?" and you'd say "Yeah man I wanna do it".

I own a King Kong 2 Pro, and I had to buy a set of (expensive!) replacement buttons because two of the original buttons would get stuck regularly. Gulikit clearly needs better quality control to ensure their customers don't have to repair their faulty products and pay for the repair themselves.
With that out of the way, that joypad is my absolute all time favourite, and I love it a lot! The ergonomics and the hall sensors are great, and the controller firmware is working well and functional.

The 8bitdo is nicer in that respect but I don’t like how the handles feel. If they were a bit less perpendicular to the body like other controllers it’d be in my rotation. The gulikit sticks are great though, albeit slightly grindy

The things I loved about King Kong 2 is its versatility across different devices, changing button layouts on a fly, and the ergonomics. Really wonderful to see smaller third party companies innovating this much in the peripheral space. The best controllers, best keyboards and best mice you can buy today are all made by small third parties, and it's not just a matter of button feel or stick resistance or even added paddles, but fundamental technological improvements like Hall sensor sticks and triggers, something the console companies don't have to this day.

A big problem with all these modern controllers with rear paddles - and something that doesn't often get addressed in reviews? - is exactly what sort of functions they can be bound to. Specifically, what I need is a controller that lets me set these to arbitrary keyboard inputs or something similar when playing on PC. Third party voice comms, third party screenshot utilities, emulation fast forward/save states, etc. My experience with these controllers is you can only really set the paddles to be the same as a different controller button, or some button combination macro, which isn't sufficient. At best it can be an alternative to L3/R3 if you don't want to press the sticks but still I sometimes need those buttons for actual gameplay. Given that both keyboards and gamepads are simple human input devices, it's frustrating that manufacturers seem allergic to creating devices that have additional freely programmable buttons for just such a purpose.
I'm told the Xbox Elite Series 2 can do keyboard bindings for paddles, but when I purchased that controller I was unable to get the Microsoft software to recognize it in Windows 10. It told me the firmware version of the controller (NEW out of the box, untouched) was not yet supported by the latest download from the Microsoft store - Insane! Returned it and got an 8bitdo, which is great for the price point, but still the same paddle problems.

Can you please do a video about the way that updating emulators on EmuDeck is breaking emulators? People might need to know this so they don't end up screwing themselves. On their wiki, EmuDeck says they don't know when a fix is coming, but I saw on Reddit someone suggested people replace the emulators with something called appimages. Is this easy? And will it allow people to maintain their saves, and also allow Steam Rom Manager to still parse and add the games to Steam? Basically, are you aware of how to replicate how EmuDeck handles the emulators it automatically provides with appimages?

The point of giving people ten minutes of macro is so nobody can complain. It's like how nobody in their right mind would play the DS with the hinge fully open. The screen angles just don't work that way, but the option is there because otherwise someone would complain that it didn't quite go back far enough. The screen magnifier on Mac OS can go in _unreasonably_ far, like no level of poor vision would warrant it, but it goes further than it needs to because if they picked an arbitrary sensible level, it wouldn't be enough for someone.
Most people might need thirty seconds of macro, so you might give them a minute? But then someone who wants to idle at a fishing minigame or something will complain they don't have two minutes. So you give them five? Nah, bugger it, give everyone _ten full minutes_ and nobody will ever have a situation that would cause them to complain.

One thing I'd like to see/try out, is a dual input trigger system. Essentially, a trigger that registers a 'button/input press' at half pull, and a second 'button/input press' at full pull, so you could map aim and fire to the same trigger. I just think that would add a level of immersion to the game play, as well as free up an additional trigger.

I love my KK3 and had to go through two KK2's. Their quality control really needs fixing. I had to RMA two KK2's because the analog sticks were crunchy and felt like it was getting caught on something when you rotated them. I ended up fixing this myself with the third replacement. Had to use a dremel tool on the underside of the stick where the supports were. The supports were rubbing against the corners of the housing.
This same issue is happening with my KK3 and I had to fix it myself again.
The firmware upgrade process could really use fixing as well. Wish it was similar to 8bitdo's way of doing it.

This would be perfect analog-centric controller, if it weren't for the battery. To this day, the 8bitdo Pro 2 is my favorite controller, not just because of how many input modes it supports, but because it has a rechargeable battery pack YOU CAN REPLACE, or just outright use AA batteries if you so chose. Batteries age and inflate, so having a game controller with no replaceable battery pack is inexcusable to me. With the Pro 2, I could theoretically use it for the rest of my life. (at least until a Sega Saturn variant turns up, or whenever gyro gets finally embedded into X-input)

Regarding the android portion of your review - I've had no issues using the KK3 max dongle adapter with android emulators on my phone. I had to map the controller buttons to the virtual controller port for each emulator, but once I did that the controller has continued to work fine. I used a regular usbc adapter when mapping so I could flip between touch and button controls, but now the dongle lives in a usbc hub that I connect my phone and other devices to.
Convenience is important to me, and I agree that the 8bitdo ultimate charging station is great design. But the KK3 wins for me by being able to adjust your controls on the fly without opening up any software.

If you use a Magic NS dongle you can plug the 8bitdo 2.4ghz dongle into it, and it works just fine on Switch. Presumably you can do this with the KK3 as well.

I had a 2 Pro and ended up returning it due to two face buttons that had sticking issues, and well as a faulty right analog stick. Never did like the hand feel of it either. Think I'll stick to first party and do my own repairs when the sticks eventually start drifting

Not that you need yet another kind of similar controller to review, but I'd love your take on the FlyDigi line (the Vader 3 Pro and the newer, cheaper DireWolf 2, specifically), since some other channels have been really bullish on them, especially their unique but apparently super precise d-pads.

I find this a really pointless complaint, honestly. No one buying a third party controller like this will be surprised the DPad is not comfortable for 2D or retro games. It's immediately clear at a glance that it's meant for titles that benefit from analog control and primarily targets those games. That's not really "mixed results". It should be expected.

My favorite controller has always been the Wii U Pro controller, for one dealbreaker reason: it has sticks on top.
My preferred playstyle is a claw grip where I use my right-hand pointer finger to adjust the camera while I use the face buttons with my thumb, and using any controller layout other than sticks on top prevents me from playing to my fullest in games like Monster Hunter and FromSoft games.
And while I love the Wii U Pro controller (that 80-hour battery life is hard to beat), I really would like to have some other third-party options with modern bells and whistles, but there just don't seem to be *any* on the market today. If 8bitdo released a version of their controllers with sticks on top, I'd buy them in a heartbeat, but that's not looking very likely atm unfortunately.
So, if Russ or anyone else has any recommendations for good modern controllers with sticks on top so I can finally retire my aging Wii U Pro controller and quit buying new ones to future-proof as they continue to increase in price, I'd really appreciate it!

I'm just loving that they're getting better. I'm mostly using the Switch Pro controller or the GameCube controller for my Switch, but should the Pro controller fail at some point, this one looks like it'd make the replacement.

I'll eventually get around to buying a new controller and this one is definitely top 2 in consideration.
But the 8BitDo Ultimate bringing a charging dock (that also connects the dongle) is just another level of quality of life enhancement that I just don't think I could actually pick Gulikit over 8BitDo, even if I prefer the formers shape/design.

I don't really have any confidence in these things. I had bought the KingKong 2 and out of the box the right analog stick was completely defective. The stick was centered but it was reading down left maxed out. I had a hell of time getting it returned and replaced and got another controller with the exact same defect but in a different direction.
It is nice that they let you swap the buttons because I don't like the Xbox layout and then the controller will actually report correctly. I don't really like the plug for the triggers it is a compromise that feels kind of bad no matter how you use it.

I only have a singe gripe with this controller : it is detected as a regular xbox controler when connected using the dongle, and the gyro implementation is not right for me : since I play with my Y axis inverted, it also invert the gyro...
That can be worked around, connecting the controller as a switch pro controller, but we lose the ability to use the analog triggers.
I find it very comfortable nontheless.

Did you A/B test the KK3 and 8bit back to back with Bluetooth or are you just basing this on memory. 1000hz is so good that going to Bluetooth on any controller feels unbearable. It’s probably just a situation of once you try it, you can’t go back kind of thing.

The reason why, on Android, it works in ES-DE and not in emulator is probably just because it's the second controller (so Player 2) which might not be configured.

It’s cool Russ shows us a video about a controller named after King Kong because King Kong’s birthday is today. King Kong (1933) first premiered on March 2, 1933 in NYC.
I’ll be wearing my Team Kong hat I got from Redbubble for this occasion. Wasn’t it cool to see Kong ride on the back of a slimmed down Godzilla and Big G didn’t even flinch or feel him jump on his side as if Kong was a weight of a parrot? 🦜

If someone has had an Xbox, and is considering a Switch, this would be a great choice. I don't know of another way to play switch on an xbox ABXY layout. And if it isn't compatible with the next version of the Switch, at least it is still a good PC controller.

I bought the original King Kong 2 and the buttons got stuck so often that I couldn't play with it. I had to return it. But, because I liked the controller, I bought another one in the hope that the faulty buttons would be just the exeption. They weren't. The next one had the same issue. Because of that, I think I will wait before I buy this one. It looks great, but I don't trust Gulikit with their quality control.
