I’ve never understood the “seeing yourself in media” thing. May be because I’m white, and don’t care, but I do have an ethnicity that’s not often in media I watch because it’s usually invisible.
Either way, I’ve never been attracted to a character because of their ethnicity. I’ve only ever cared about their personality. It’s always seemed really shallow to me to focus on ethnicity as the only way someone could relate to a character.
Heck, my favorite Disney princess is Tiana. Before her, I didn’t have a favorite princess. It was mainly just the lion king characters who were my favorites

Inclusion should be a side effect of good writing, not the goal. Your very own "how to write good/bad female characters" should be direct evidence of that. The issue when they are bad isn't "people at large are bigoted and don't like inclusion", it's they are badly written. (The fact there are bigoted people not withstanding, and even if withstanding, they are a very narrow minority, not the gamers at large.)

I think there are more bigoted than you think but I also think it is lower that they think. They think there is a racist in every closet and a microaggression is unconsciously racism.

Even the best creative works reflect the biases of their creators. Just look at, for instance, the difference between how other cultures are portrayed in early Dragon Ball vs late Dragon Ball. The writing was mostly consistent, but the author got more worldly with success.
Unfortunately most game writers in the west nowadays are insanely incompetent, so all they can do is tokenization. Sweet Baby and the literal ton of other companies that do the same shit just make sure the writing is as shit as possible for the sake of "inclusion". And they end up making weirdly racist stuff considering they think themselves to be "anti-racist".
People didn't have a problem with female characters before. Or black characters, or any other race. Heck, a lot of gamers' favorite characters are not white, with how many of the actually-good games come from japan. And people like characters not because of their race or gender, but because they're well-written or they feel close to them in some way. Just look at Goku, dude's a monkey alien based on a chinese myth, and fucking everyone loves Goku.

In the end, people just want a good writing and if the characters happen to be from a minority or stignamized group then that's simply a bonus for representation. I'm firmly in the camp that all representation isn't good representation. If it can't be properly represented, then it might as well be left out.

My understanding is that they force certain changes for the sake of diversity. That doesn't sound like a game using diversity as a gimmicky substitute for good writing, to me.

Diversity for diversity's sake can also cause more harm than good by focusing on the basic, surface-level traits which can result in stereotypes and caricatures instead of well-balanced representation.
It's worth reminding that writing is not just the dialogues, it's EVERYTHING that happens in the story.

One thing I never hear anyone mention about the Kotaku article is how it flagrantly contradicts itself over the course of two sentences. First sentence, "oh, people think SBI is hired to alter characters and storylines and make things more diverse, but that isn't true." Second sentence, "what they do is focus on writing story and dialogue"... you know, story like in storylines, or dialog like what characters speak. It's so baffling - the writer isn't even saying "the sky isn't blue, it's actually yellow", they're saying "the sky isn't blue like you idiots seem to think, it's AKSHUALLY blue"
True fact, the executives at Eidos Interactive wanted the protagonist of Tomb Raider to be a guy. The developers had to push to keep Lara Croft as is, so what Nux says is totally real and also devs can go against it when they want to.

There's some irony in the business model of these consultants. They'll claim to be combating things like racism or sexism, while relying on a stereotype that the people they're claiming to represent are so bigoted, that there's an untapped market of potential buyers who's purchasing decision of the game is based on its' lack of the characters with their shared superficial characteristics. The implication is that these "under represented groups" are incredibly bigoted. Zealously bigoted even, since they will even go out of their way to hate on your product for not sufficiently appeasing them.
E.g. Implicitly they are claiming that black women don't buy persona 3, because there are no black female characters (which much like myself not knowing if this is true, they wouldn't know this before purchasing the game).

I don't have a problem with diversity, I have a problem with terrible writing in media in general. There seems to be a lot of very untalented people writing stories out there. Diverse characters in modern days usually suck, because when you force diversity, those characters get added because "we have to," not because the authors have a good idea of a character. Also since all these characters are of the "protected speices," they tend to be the blandest or Mary/Gary Sue'st ones around, because one thing these people are more afraid of than not including representation, is getting mobbed for giving those people any bad traits.

One of the greatest games of all time in my opinion was prototype 2 the mechanics were slick the innovations on the powers were refreshing. It had a black male lead and literally no one cared (made a stink about it) and if I remember correctly it out performed the original prototype in terms of sales

The obvious issue with this is that in a world without sexism or racism, the casting of just about every role should be incredibly diverse. This was pulled off very well in Star Trek. Casting mostly white men doesn't make sense here, mainly because white men are not a majority of the world.

Fanbases as a whole are slow to catch up to most things. It's honestly surprising Sweet Baby got traction this "fast", though there still needs to be a push for all the other companies that do the same shit.
Games journalism was bad for YEARS before Gamergate. Some of us know and try to make it known, but we tend not to be listened to until some kind of stink happens. With gamergate it was a "game" "developer" sleeping with a large amount of industry people to get positive coverage of her game (the meme was "five guys", but the actual number is likely over a hundred) and a foothold in positions of power within the industry, but that unearthed so much more corruption and bad journalistic practices... which was ignored because, instead of reporting on that shit, game journalism sites decided to slander all gamers (the multiple "Gamers are dead" articles all popping up from various medium-big outlets on the same day and pretending it was a sexist/racist campaign against... who the fuck knows).
This time the stink was a Sweet Baby employee deciding to start a harassment campaign against a guy who made a list of the games the company worked on. Notice how all the medium-big gaming outlets are all omitting that fact and pretending there's harassment going the other way (there isn't). The same thing is happening again, but I think people are a bit less gullible this time around.
Admittedly, the Harley scene is kinda still in line with her chaotic behavior although odd.
I'm one of your 13% viewers and honestly gaming today has a great amount of representation without the need to force it into the game via SBI tactics.
Been a gamer all my life, starting with Atari and NES, and i used to be so frustrated by the lack of women protagonists in games. But we had Samus, and the RE fenale leads like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, or Lara Croft (though back then i was a little frustrated by how sexualized she was). But it's gotten so much better. In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic i was so excited I could create a female character.
And today we actually have very well-written female protagobists that lead games. The Tomb Raider reboot was so well done in my opinion. It humanized Lara and touched on some of the trauma she must have felt without turning her into a hypersexualized character and without feeling forced. I also really like Aloy.
And for me personally, because I'm gay, Ellie from The Last of Us is just one of the best characters for representation as far as I'm concerned, because she's well-written, humanized, and most importantly, it doesn't feel forced because her sexuality is not the main focus of her character.
Whatever people think of Part II, that game means a lot to me personally because Ellie doesn't fit the age-old lesbian tropes and her sexuality is secondary to her character as a whole. She's, in my opinion, an example of representation done right, because the representation really is not the focus of that story and it's not forced. The proof is in that her love interests could have been changed to male characters and the story would not have changed all that much other than needing to change the pregnancy thing.
As someone who has hoped for better representation all my life, it would all mean less than nothing to me if it was forced into a game where it didn't fit in an attempt to pander to my interests.
I'd rather play a male protagonist who has cookie cutter female sex interests at that point.

Despite how much he'll research be careful and prep his investigations, he is categorically an "Unreliable Resource". They are rewriting history again, and lying by ommision, either by facts or context despite the surmounting evidence of actions. This really hurts when it comes to wikipedia. The info being for context is the Kotaku article which is in turn deemed a "reliable resource". What else do they use? IGN, Vox, Ars Technica, Buzzfeed, Wired, Mary Sue, Polygon, etc. They in turn, cite Kotaku, regurgitating the same thing, refuting context. And where do the masses go for supposedly unbiased summary of a topic, history or event? Wikipedia. The narrative has been written and set.
I've been geek/nerd/gamer for a long time. We were ostrisized for being different. We built a community. We took everyone in. Didn't care about race, creed, or differences. We focused on what we had in common. As with everything else, there had been cringe moments, but we always try to build and improve with experience. It was a place where we could share our interests with eachother, express ideas as stupid as some were. We didn't have to agree on everything (so much trek vs wars). But we could get away from the torment of jocks, preps, religion (and at certain points, even the goverment) and bullies that generally looked at us as lower class. We had escapism. We had help to cope with the world. And the world changes. Heck, even at one point in the 2000's-2010's it was cool.
Fast forward to last 8 or so years. A new group of bullies have found someone to punch down on. They are probably the most hateful that has come before. And with incestious relation between these groups and "journalism", socially, publicly, they have been continually punching hard on us all. We've regressed and lost progress. We are constantly tiptoeing on broken glass and navigating minefields We are back to the status of basement dwellers.
It is harder to enjoy any of my hobbies anymore. I want to be the captain of my starship. The rogue of my party. Follow the adventures of my icons. And these have been broken, replaced, shadows of their former selves and downright villified.
All my routes of escapism are diminishing. One by one.
And I am so..... so so tired.

What I got from Mutahar are three main points:
1: The kind of thing SBI does is a legitimate business practice and companies like them are going to continue because it appeals to investors.
2: SBI's been involved with good and bad games in roughly equal measure, and it's hard to prove how much of an influence they actually are, so it's kind of unfair to paint them as the cause of bad games being bad games. Using the example of Suicide Squad, its most glaring issues had nothing to do with the avenues that SBI would be improving, so they definitely shouldn't take the blame for that one.
3: The people in the company he's investigated seem like terrible people, though. Especially considering their line of work.

These people claim that they help story have coherence but look at sp2, ssktjl, good by volcano high and God of war Ragnarok, this game forces you to goto places that are meaningless like the dwarf place or the elf place, so if they don't do what they claim to do what are they doing?
