Just came back from a week on Mount Desert Island, was a good time. Man was it foggy last week, crazy how many pots are out there. It is an impressive fishery. Glad you shared this I always wanted to see what it was like lobstering.
Cutler Maine . I was hunting up by there about 30 years ago with a fellow that grew up in jonesport . He said we had to go get some cutler clams . We got a big crate from a older lady and they were the biggest steamer clams I ever had in my life. They were delicious. Do they still get those up that way . I remember the lady saying it was because the tides were so big that they had to wait for a really low tide to get them. I’d love to buy some of those again.
The wife just bought two 1lb Maine hardshell lobsters for $10 apiece in Oklahoma, which led me to wonder why lobsters are so cheap. Are the Maine lobstermen doing ok? Are they making a decent wage? Is there an over fishing, etc? Ive found out 2 things in the last 2 days: Lobstermen are REALLY the backbone behind conservation, meaning there are good lobster numbers because of self regulation (mostly through size limits and designed trap ineffeciencies). And 2, the buyers are becoming "Walmart" type corporations. Super buyers that are doing all the buying and in general keeping the fisherman from getting their fair share. The reason for the low price is the success the fishermen have had in the past 20 years at sustaining the lobsters, and they are therefore plentiful this year.
chet mcguire lobster fishermen do really well depending on the number of traps. I just started fishing for a guy and we have 600 traps. Sell to a dealer at $5.50 per pound.
About as slow as you can possibly haul. South of maine we use 35-42ft boats with open sterns and 10-30pot trawls enable us to haul 3-4 hundred traps in an 8hr day.increase profits cover more ground spend less fuel🤷in theory
I know about taping. Did Longusters off Key West for 2 years in 64 65 a while back with a friend that had a good size trap line. He had me bate the traps. In the morning it went well. BUT BY 10 AM THE FISH HEADS BECAME UNFROZEN AND DIDN'T SMELL VERY GOOD. cough gag. UGH.. Good luck and have fun. I do have family in Bangor Maine.
Roger Pacific The smell is pretty bad. Our bait is herring, is never frozen and smells horrible, especially in the Summer. we had some bait that was left on the boat a week in the sun and when I pulled the lid off the tote there were so many maggots it was as if someone dumped a #50 bag of rice into, and the fish turned into brown putrid paste. I wish I had a video to share of that.
Love them Bug Fish Babs !;>) Especially those from the dark , down colds. Sweet meats but not always so easy to greet. All this net nonsense ? We just dive . Bug fish ... I did earn an award in the navy once .. an R&R (harhar bar Hong Kong ?) ate the most cockroaches for the ...Oh Ships... Where'd we leave our Dixie Cups !?
Nice Video. A lot of lobster out there and a nice size of lobster. How many traps do you have on a commercial license? Why does your trap have 3 sections? What is the use of the middle section?
Mathieublanglois We are allowed 800 traps, and the sections in the traps are what keep the lobsters in, I believe so the lobsters are not all in one part of the trap because the longer they are in there the more likely they will fight and eat eachother.
Oh I wanna lobster fish so bad. I work Westmoreland fisheries we get out lobsters from main. is it hard to work on a lobster boat? How dose one become a lobster fishermen?
MisterLunario It can pay good, depends on who's boat your on, some people fish harder than others. If you can handle early mornings, long days, sea sickness, rotten bait and lifting traps all day it is a great job. I suggest hanging out at the warfs to see if anyone is looking for help.
There's plenty of bugs the stern manyus taking all the good bugs and when he's got em the third pulls the trap down ckea s the rest of the shit out stacks it there plenty of bugs. We're catching 150 per twenty trap troll n the triples r right full Ben a good fall so far. Ur guys were kinda ruff on them bugs throwing em in a crate like that they should be going into alive tank
V notch.!! You can't take a notched bug. Gotta let the eggers go. If your not already lobstering you never gonna be nuttin but a stern man. Try buying you own boat and traps. You'll last about a month. ALL lobstermen think they own the ocean and will cut you off every time they see one of you trawls. The don't even like the little ten pot recreational guys. They get their 800 pots but you can't have ten. The dirty bastards. They do however do a great job of managing the fisheries. They don't have to notch a female with eggs but they do. Except the jerks that bleach them and throw them in the tote.
fantastic video..

Great video! Some of those traps have served you well considering the number of trap tags/seals on them...
