i check out all the boxes. this ED is seriously sucking the soul out of my life, body and relationships. and i hate to admit it but even that is not an exaggeration. recovery's been really hard for me and i've failed at all my attempts so far, but here i am trying again. i no longer want this ED to take control over my life. i want to have my old energy and healthy body back, and not let my insecurities affect me and my mindset anymore.
so, thank you colleen. your videos are helping me see way past the unrealistic and unhealthy expectations and standards caused by diet culture and the society. you're really out here saving lives 🙏🏻
You got this! Keep fighting the good fight!❤
1 / you're not eating enough
2/ you're restricting or limiting certain foods
3/ emotional drive to eat

Food is just so good tho
Food is not one thing drop the carbs.

I'm a thirteen year old girl who is a competitive swimmer and 88 lbs who has no health issues. But, I eat a lot of junk and instead of causing me to gain weight (since I exercise so much) it causes me to feel bloated or gassy and my stomach hurts often. Also, I don't like the feeling of fullness because sometimes it makes me nauseous and I have emetophobia (the fear of throwing up) from an experience as a child. So, I often feel full at meals even when I haven't eaten much, and then I go home and eat a lot of snacks and junk which makes me feel sick. So this video helps a lot!
Hey there! So glad this video is helpful! Make sure to talk to your parents (if you haven't already) and let them know your struggles so they can find the support you need. ❤
I had the urge to eat more after having just eaten, but after listening to the last part, that craving starts to wind down. Thank you so much for that♥️
I think my problem was getting so excited to eat my meal and then feeling sad when I finish it.. it spoke to me the most
Your channel has been life changing really. I can't thank you enough.
Wow, thank you! I'm so glad you find it helpful!❤
I'm kinda proud- yesterday I ordered a large pizza (I REALLY wanted some for a few weeks but still was worried about calories, overeating, not being 'healthy' etc). For the first time since I can remember I LEFT some slices because I was full, satisfied and SO HAPPY :') the pizza was amazing. usually I would stuff the whole thing down bc its not something I would *let myself* order often
Agree! So obsessed with trying to loose weight… most of my 55 years. Im done with diets as it has not worked and as you explained has made me so frustrated.
Thank you a lot for this great explanation! And I love your video set up! Looks so clean and relaxing. ✨🧡
Chronically ill, boring home life because of my illness. I emotional eat and restrict foods because of my illness. I think about food all the time. I have ADHD too so my dopamine levels are low. I’m drowning and don’t know how to get out.
As someone who struggled with this, the only thing that truly helped was cutting out carbs and sugar full stop. Now I’m carnivore and I consistently feel my best, physically and mentally.
Thank you ❤
I definitely struggle with the third one because when im done eating i always miss the dopamine I get from eating especially when its something really tasty.
I totally understand that! Maybe when you are physically satisfied and are still wanting that dopamine hit, you can try switching gears and do something that brings you joy. ( ie reading a book, going for a walk, watching a movie, calling a friend) ❤️🥰
I was able to control my hunger a year ago was when I barely ate but now I can barely handle the hunger I just want treats
I’ve been giving a lot of thought to this and this might fit into number 2 but I feel like my meals, mostly on weekdays, are just not satisfying and I think that’s causing me to keep eating when I’m not hungry. I guess I have a food rule about only eating certain things on the weekends and that food should be healthier during the week.
Reason 3
#2 - restricting foods for sure - then I just think about it all the time!
I wonder if the people eating more fruits and veges is because they simply eat more food every day. Too many fruits and vegetables can also be an issue.
Distress and needing comfort
yeahh, it's the third for me
But what if you're genetically diabetic and moderation doesn't work? I eat one cookie and my blood sugar is effed for days, I'm also hungrier when my blood sugar is high...it's like I'm stuck in a catch 22
Mounjaro is the ONLY thing that has helped me.
Yeah so the 2nd suggestion for reason #3 is clearly not working for me (I’ve been trying to find coping mechanisms that work for me for the last 25 years).
Do you have a video for people with BED?
Omg #3!!!!!! Sooooo me!!!
I can't my stomach hurts
3 out 3
Leptin resistance.
1:04 you’re not eating enough
5:04 restricting or eliminating certain foods
Sadly I think it's all of them lol
I'm bored
Just eat cake and you'll be good.
Not me having all three 🥹😭💔
#3! Especially between meals I'm always looking for snacks or something. I do recognize it as emotional/comfort eating, but I find it very hard to change. Or the urge to end the meal with something sweet/desert, even at lunch or breakfast. It almost feels like just a habit.
Thank you for this video!
Oh my gosh!! I didn't realize #3 was me!! I'm overeating at dinner and yup.... I think I'm uncomfortable or sad with being "done"
I totally get this. I think this is MY BIGGEST trigger for over eating. If my meal is DELICIOUS, I am genuinely sad that it's gone. In the past, I would eat more just because but now I actually make myself wait about 20 minutes and always end up realizing I am full and don't need anymore. Small progress lol
so glad it resonated!!!!
I 100% get sad about being done quite often. I dont struggle with my weight but surely soemthing is wrong with me consistently overriding my body's cues of fullness.
50 years of dieting and restricting have caused me to want to eat all the time. Thank you for explaining this!
50? :(
@@megorly792deadass
50 years is crazy
I’m exactly the same - a life of dieting and obsession with food. At 69, I long to be free of this!
@@genomeara6922 yes you deserve to be free !
Ok. I lost 40lbs in college (long ago lol) by eating only when hungry and stopping when satisfied. Wasn’t always easy to stop eating, but it was a great way to live. Many years and 3 kids later I struggle with the eating until overfull. You are the first person who identified that it is NORMAL to feel like that at the end of a good meal… and thank you SO much for the advice that this feeling is fleeting and overeating will only make things worse! Brilliant!!❤
Same! I realized I don't really need to eat much at all in order to be satisfied. Ever since my first pregnancy I started eating a lot more and have never been able to get myself back to that point I was getting ready to start a "counting calories" type of diet but I struggle so much with that because I really do feel like I'm thinking about food all the time. I'm going to try to get back to listening to my body's signals instead.
Wow, thank you for this video! I see myself in #3, specifically in the sadness that the meal is over! I never really realized that's what it was. I'm not one that goes looking for food when I'm not hungry, but I do have trouble "saying goodbye" to a meal. This is a lightbulb moment for me!
so glad you had that lightbulb moment and it provided clarity!!!
I often find myself eating when not hungry as a means to break up what I am doing or have a change or a small pick me up when I am doing something boring. I also definitely keep eating past fullness because I don't want the meal to end.
Omg yes me too it is so frustrating but I am glad to know that I am not the only one who struggles with this. Hopefully we can both get through this!
@@cristinauribe9201 thanks, that's really encouraging
My main reason for overeating is because I buy way too much food and cook too big of portions. I freeze a lot of it but still, I eat more than I want because I'm afraid it will get wasted! I'm working on buying less! I'm just thankful I'm aware now and can work on it! 😊
you’re not eating enough
leptin = fullness hormone
ghrelin = hunger hormone
you’re restricting or limiting certain foods
emotional drive to eat
sadness when full is normal
gratitude
it won’t fix the bad day
I feel more satisfied when I pick desired foods and stop when comfortably full. Surprises me when my stomach tells me it is full early in the meal. I am finally able to accept and throw the rest out. If I don't eat enough at a meal it is like my appetite is out of control for the rest of the day. Honoring my hunger and fullness works best.
It is all 3 for me. I’ll go on a diet, I’ll have my breakfast 2 eggs , turkey bacon, coffee . Lunch a green salad, a healthy dinner. Then after all that , I’ll give into my comfort cravings!! And eat 2 candy bars, then that’s not enough I’ll have a bowl of sweet cereal and top it of with a bag of chips😢 I don’t know how to control my emotional eating. All I know is it feels good, and it’s calming to eat. I don’t have a care in the world when I’m eating.
I feel you so hard. I’ve been binging this month in the exact same way ~ I’m fine in the morning but late afternoon/evening, everything goes out the window! And I binge. Thank you for presencing this 💛
I’ll go like six months doing well then I’ll have a 2-3 week bender where I eat a bunch of junk and gain like 5-10 pounds.
I’m a 15 year old girl who has gone through so much trouble with her weight, mainly from getting Crohn’s disease at 14, and it’s affected me so much. I’ve tried so much diets and nothing ever worked. Your channel always makes me feel known and loved :))
Ask your parents to make an appointment for you to see a nutritionist if you haven't already. Hope you feel better. ✌🏽
Hello I am going through so much stomach problems like gas bloating pain vomit etc and have crohn's as per symptoms so please help me with your experience and and some advice
Also tell bout your gluten free or not
Please 🙏 🙏🙏
I just got called out so bad by this woman. I just had like 1800 calories for dinner after skipping breakfast and lunch while refusing my cravings. My calorie intake is all over the place, like yesterday i had 400 calories and the day before was 1550. More people should see this video cause this is an actual lifesaver. My goodness you are actually spreading so much useful information,
and YOU just called me out as well. as scary as it seems, we *have* to break the cycle in order to free ourselves from this extreme hunger and be able to eat normally again. i'm restarting my recovery journey once again and hopefully, i'll do better this time and avoid relapsing. i wish you the same thing as well. good luck!
Since I’ve been working from home it gets very easily to eat a lot more. Since nobody is watching you and you get to go to the kitchen several times if it’s just so close! I’ve noticed I always wake up very hungry and since I start work very early, I basically have my breakfast while reading my emails, I’ve found myself going for extra snacks when work is just so stressing and I feel I need that extra energy. I can’t make it stop at this point
OMG 😳😳😳😳 I never realised I was actually sad that the meal is over and it was causing me to overeat.
Mind blown.
i used to order junk food literally DAILY! i watched a few videos and got to know about emotional eating and quickly realised that i do that and so i chose painting/drawing/reading books as a coping up mechanism and i also ask myself "which emotion are you trying to suppress by indulging in that meal?" and yk what this is really working! i am binge eating less. but one problem that i am facing nowadays is not eating for a long time due to busy schedule and i get headaches because of this and when i finally eat, i eat more than i should, so i am working on that now hope i get better☺
I love that you have your “emotional eating toolbox” at the ready. So happy that it is reducing your binges!!! As for not eating when you are busy, I totally get that! This is where a little “practical hunger” comes in handy. Meaning eat something small but satisfying ( like yogurt or protein bar etc. ) if you aren’t hungry in the morning but it’s enough to give you energy and get you to your next meal without feeling ravenous! 🥰
@@ColleenChristensen thankyou so much you are so sweet🥰❤️🫶
ive been in a binge restrict cycle for 3 years now and im sooo tired of it and i now really want to recover and be normal but im terrified of gaining weight because im at a normal bmi and im bigger than all my friends i hate this so much
All 3 three for me, but I'm getting better at the last one though, all I ever do is fast, and so maybe this is my sign to take a break and fill my body with what it needs and stop depriving it of nutrition. I never had this problem before I had started fasting constantly for spiritual reasons. But I was most certainly guilty of emotional eating.
Born to eat intuitively, forced to restrict
(have to be in a certain weight category bc of my sport)
i would love to watch a full video on intuitive eating while on appetite suppressing medication! your videos have been so immensely helpful ❤️❤️❤️
I love you so much ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my gosh. I’ve been so sad, stressed because I have been dealing with exactly this. Thank you so much Colleen. ❤️ I seriously don’t know where I would be today without you.
You're the sweetest! Sending you all the love!
I've been in ED recovery and food is only on ny mind because I'm trying to fight thoughts that are telling me to restrict or starve myself. So I'm always thinking "this won't do anything to me it's okay just eat it" and the other part is "you can't eat that, dont you see how big you are getting?.. don't eat it" and I just wanna be free
Wow amazing vid. A lot of dieticians can come across quite judgemental (without meaning to I’d imagine) and literally make you feel worse, but you deliver messages in such a kind and understanding way. About to binge watch your videos now! Haha
Try being a weed smoker and intermittent fasting everyday.
Hi, thank you for such wonderful content❤. Can I ask some questions related to my health in a private message or email? I hope you will help me with this.
1 - I don’t think I’m eating enough nutritious foods and 3 - I usually eat when I’m overwhelmed, and the part when you said being upset that the food is finish really resonates. I think if I ate slower and actually enjoyed the food. I wouldn’t be so upset when it finishes😊

I feel hunger in stomach but in mouth I feel like I am always full . The foods that I liked before now I don't like anything . Everything is Just tasting bad for some reason.
the first reason got me out of my eating disorder. a friend had mentioned it. thank you so much for sharing!!
i just unlearned to cook with enough calories cause i was obsessed with eating as lean as possible (if not high-nutrient food, i wouldnt allow it to have calories xD)
it's weird to learn listening to my body again.. it tells me when something is missing. i just forbade it for so long
Hi ! If we eat before bed (i know eating before bed is okay) but we eat as a “self sooth” and “comfort” to sleep after a long day and def eat beyond fullness even when were not hungry and this has been a pattern for 15 years what can we slowly do to replace food as a self soothed before bed?
The habit is obviously hard to break and i know neuroplasticity and hardwork needs to come to play but its hard and i was wondering if anyone has any tips
See I want to stop snacking because the surplus calories are contributing to my weight gain I literally just want food all the time. It isn't emotional, I'm just weak for the taste of fast food so I don't eat food that fills me and has the energy I need. That's my struggle. Taco Bell is amazing
Great video. It is good to remind this to myself. I am on IE for over 5 months now. I was on holiday few weeks ago and because we were visiting London and lots of other places around there wasn't much vegetables and fruit. And I was actually craving fresh cucumber and banana 😅 Which never happend to me. IE is libe saver😍
Yessss I LOVE to hear this! That's awesome!
I don't fit into any of these categories. I have this cognitive dissonance where I want to lose weight, but I would rather enjoy food than lose weight? So, I'm not really sure how to lose weight without feeling restricted, since I don't restrict anything now. I'm not binging nor do I feel overfull, but I eat high calorie foods and "too much" of them - if I didn't restrict anything I would never lose weight.
Not everyone can eat certain things in moderation. It's like telling an alcoholic to drink in moderation. Some good info here but a lot is missing. Check out Autumn Bates for the best info from a nutrition perspective.
know matter what i eat or how much it just seems to never be enough. soon after my stupid brain tells me to go get something else. the only time i sorta eat less is when i drink stuff, but that is sorta like eating as well. im a mess, there is no solution.
Wow , #3 resonates with me. Thank you so much for the amazing information given in your video.
Clearly, you are gearing yourself towards an anorexic audience or something because food addiction is a real thing and you dismiss it like people have total control all the time do alcoholics and chronic gamblers have control of their vice?? No, they do not. They always have the choice to do those things, but their brain basically will not let them because the urge is so intense
This just helped me realize the reason after every meal five minutes later I go to make noodles or eat a nutty buddy thank you ❤
I really feel like I’ve worked hard on my mental restriction on foods I used think of as ‘bad’, yet when I have such foods, I still can’t keep to a decent sized portion and end up overeating. I just feel once I start, I can’t stop, because I’m enjoying the foods and it tastes good. And by the time my stomach aches, which hits me down to earth, its all gone. Any advice?
I'm 14 yr old male and I keep constantly overeating even though this week and last week everyday I've had about 6,000 calorie days and I'm starting to think now that its emotional drive for me to eat because I cant stop now thank you for taking your time to make this vid!!!!
#1 usually and #3 when I'm at a family gathering.
#3, then #2 - plus boredom
I'm not eating enough....but when I do I gain weight😔
What is with cravings although you ate enough calories? I think I gained weight the past time, (I’m not underweight) but I have such huge cravings that it won’t stop. Even when eat enough veggies and fruit and proteins
It might be one of the other reasons
I think #1 is me right now. I just recently gave up dieting (like I just deleted MyFitnessPal last week), and I’d been trying to stay in a calorie deficit for months. I can also relate to #3. I definitely get bummed when a really yummy meal is done, but I love your advice about getting excited about making it again! I’ll definitely try that next time! ☺️
Let me know how it goes!! ❤️
emotional eating plus sugar craving.
were you ever substantial weight?
#3 for me, all the way.
Crazy but it’s kinda true that the assumption is if you’re not on some diet then you were either born lucky & thin or 100% pigging out 100% of the time. So toxic! I love your videos Colleen!
Is that houseplant elephant ears?
I think I'm number 2. 😢
Am having this appetite to eat more but am not satisfied i don't know what to do
recovery is rough lmao 😞🙏
I just never feel full. 🤷♂️
Definitely number 1
love the haircut btw Colleen! are those bangs or how did you get it to sit so cute!!
Oh, yeah! All 3
Never realized the idea of being sad because the meal is over!! This is it!! This is my issue!! Going to change the way I think about coming to the end of a meal!! Thanks for the great advise!!
This video was wonderful so so helpful. Thank you 🙏❤️
You are so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful! ❤️
White women...
Good advice overall but encouraging eating processed foods was disappointing.
Processed foods definitely cause health issues.
You can be thin and unhealthy
im 5'8 n weigh about 110 pounds, and i eat soooo much, always am hungry even when im so full i cant eat lol
don't eat enough due to always working or taken care of family members. thanks
take care of yourself too!!! 💕
i’ve struggled with binging and restricting for 5 years now and i’m always thinking about food. i’ve upped my intake to around 1200-1500 and it’s almost gone away except im still obsessive about tracking everything
I get hungry when I’m tired. If I catch myself overeating, I stop and either take a nap or grab some coffee.
Being aware of the issues is the first step to fix them.
I have all of them sadly, still now i know what to fix and what to work on ❤
as someone in recovery from anorexia i think i overeat/binge because i freak out about when i am going to be eating next and so i have to consume everything i see in that moment incase my body gets starved again even though i have been eating regularly my body is still freaked out and eating every 3 hours feels like a long time to not be eating even though my body was starved before
