I spent a week on Vancouver island six years ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since. hopefully moving there from Toronto someday soon. This video is all i want to do with my life. You're living the dream.
What you don't see is us dropping by one of our favourite forests after fishing. Daniel and I ended up picking until 9:30pm! I swear Golden Chanterelles can glow in the dark! :D
That is what Rod and I were hoping for! A video individuals could enjoy in the morning, as well as inspire them to hit the forests after work. There is still a little bit of light at the end of the day to squeak in an after work pick! :P
It is so exciting to see mushrooms poking out of the moss. Like I said in the video, you're hunting for treasure, and when you find "the patch" the rush of emotions is indescribable!!
@@KittyKanhoffen I couldn’t agree more. I see you are a teacher! That’s awesome. I wish more teachers would get their kids out of the classroom and into the wild as you do! Keep up the good work!
I honestly couldn't ask for anything more. Back in my early 20's I was always itching to travel and see more of the world. It wasn't until I met Daniel that I realized I had such a beautiful place right in front of me to explore. Thanks for stopping by lovethemack.
A little bit of fishing, a little hiking, and lots and lots of foraging while mushrooms are around. Our buyer said it best, the busyness of life will always be there, but mushrooms won't! That saying could be adapted for anything really. #selfcareisimportant
Isn't Rod just the BEST, and Dan is such a great sport. Krenz has been putting up with my fish and mushroom screams every off since 2012 ans still loves me more than ever. I am one lucky gal. Thanks to you too Minko for watching!
Guess who made that video tonight! Well we kind of started one. After foraging we made pizza using the Chanterelles we picked. I totally get where you're coming from Kenneth, because that was my problem for my first season and a half. I LOVED picking any choice mushroom, but afterwards I had so many to deal with, I didn't know what to do with them (preserve or cook). We tried freezing raw ones, freezing and vacuum packing cooked meals, then I started to dehydrate them (that is my preferred method to store). Other than that, we have our little group of friends that we give them away too, and the rest we sell to either local buyers/restaurants!
It has been a fabulously busy start to the school year, and we are having so much fun that time is just whipping by. Can you believe it is almost November Sammi??! Thanks for supporting us!!
Thanks fo sharing this one miss Kitty! There’s just something so unquantifiably groovy about the satisfaction and just....whatever “that” is when you find your first golden orange mushroom. It’s like finding a nugget of gold! 🤓 I still remember my first mushroom hunt on the outer islands....wayyyy back in 1989. ☺️ perhaps I’m just weird, but I remember that first mushroom like it was yesterday and more than that I remember the person who so generously shared his knowledge of mushrooms with me! I could go on and on,but yeah, foraging is so much fun, and I wish every young person in Canada could have the opportunity to go observing around in the rain looking for the mushroom gold. 😊 you do such a great job of sharing your outdoor experiences ! Huge 👍!
It is hard to explain isn't it Derek. There are so many similarities between fishing and mushrooms. Just like fish have spots they hold in, mushrooms have their preferred forests. There are so many species to fish for and so many species to forage for. Mushrooms have their "flush times" and fish have their "run times." AND you do both activities in the beautiful outdoors.
@@rehmankhan3991 Ohhh that's what you meant, lol. You do realize the person in this video with me is my husband right? Paul is an amazing adventure buddy!
@@KittyKanhoffen I wish I knew all the English names! The most common ones here are chanterelle, funnel chanterelles and penny bun. Sheep polypore and wood hedgehog are two of my favourites. Thanks for teaching me about chicken of the woods, we have it here but no tradition of eating it. Right now I'm looking for black trumpets, delicious!
I love fishing for Chanterelles too! Hehe. We got some prime Chanty's up in Chilliwack, but then it froze... booo hooo! So sad. I do the same thing picking away from my basket and going from one to another. Keep them coming.
Oh Daniel and I saw some devastating sights this weekend too. Many mushrooms needed to be left behind due to having a layer of ice.I Mushroom heartbreak is a real thing Doc, but I am sure you already know that. 😂😜 It just sucks how the season was just starting, and all of a sudden we got this cold spell. Bah! P.S. take care of Rod for me when you see him on the river, he had a bit of a rough go out here.
You two need to stop reminding how my coho season has been!! 😗 I was treated like a king the last few days... was served fried chicken last night, pizza tonight...
@@KittyKanhoffen Oh no not good to hear about the ice out there as well. I found some chanterelles that were frozen solid. I Shed a tear in my soul. I was so excited that this was turning out to be an epic season and then just... FROZEN! P.S. Rod had a rough go out there too??? Oh oh. Not good. The vedder has kicked his butt, litterally left him down in the mud. We are still holding out some hope? Fingers crossed. I have two weeks of work. Maybe get out there for one or two evening attempts at a bobber down after work. Then second week of November hit it again.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures ok hold on, I look at the recent Vedder event as how Superman lost all his power and became a commoner... All these people messaging me asking for help because they are frustrated that they can’t catch a Vedder coho, I just reply “I’m no longer Superman, sorry.” 😉
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures "The Vedder has kicked his butt, literally left him down in the mud." That line KILLED me! Oh my word, he showed me his Peppa Pig fall. P.S. Rod, you know we heckle the ones we love right?
Now that is a good day. I found a couple of what I thought were chantrells while fishing last week but wasn't sure so I left them. Now I wish I had picked them. Do they keep coming up over a period of weeks or are they usually done after a week or two? I am heading back to the river in a couple days so hopefully more have come up.
When in doubt, take a bunch of photos/record the forest type (young mixed conifer, old growth with dense forest floor etc/elevation.... Leave the mushroom behind and post them in a Facebook Mushroom ID Forum. I personally follow facebook.com/groups/1752805481661732, and they have been excellent at helping those who are new to foraging. That is how I started, but shortly after I bought a field guide, which I relied on a lot, and still do!

HULLLLO PAULIE AGAIN! Long time no chat eh? I didn't expect Rod and I to be so speedy getting another video out so soon. So to answer your question about why we didn't keep the fish, there are very few rivers/streams/creeks where you are allowed to retain fish on Vancouver Island. This wasn't one of them. This fish is also wild, hence it's adipose fin was not clipped, so it had to be released. I will have to test out some fish and mushroom recipes to show you guys later. Tonight we made pizza with our chantys, which is also super awesome! Stay safe out the GP!
Reminds me of being a kid on Quadra Island and picking chanterelles with my family and selling them. Also I thought you had spotted an actual 🐓 and were going to capture it😜
Ha that made me LOL! You've inspired me Camille, if we ever do a video featuring Chicken of the Woods... I already have my title picked out, because of you. "I CAPTURED A WILD CHICKEN!" Thoughts??
@@ChipDarby13 It is already a done deal. Just got to find the mushrooms, film it and BOOM! Unfortunately Chicken is done until next summer/early fall. 😢😢🤪🤣
Yes there are. They start flushing typically after that first wave of cold weather (beginnin to second week of October). The past couple weeks we have been finding our patches in between 800-1000m.
Thanks for watching and that is a great question! One that actually took me a couple years of experience before I found the answer myself. So I have tried numerous ways to store different species of mushrooms after foraging. We have tried freezing them raw, freezing them cooked, and dehydrating. Out of the three, dehydrating is provides you with the best "shelf life." We have a dehydrator from Cabelas, but my only beef with it is that it is too small for the amount we can bring home in a weekend. SO during Covid-19's first "stay at home way" Dan, his brother and I built our own that is much bigger, and bought an industrial fan to slide underneath. Now, we haven't tried it yet, but I'll try to remember to let you know how it goes.
Also, to throw it out there. We never end up bringing all our mushrooms home. Over the past couple years Daniel and I have established connections with local buyers,/restaurants to sell to.
Loved this ❤ I have just started learning about our local mushrooms but I haven't been brave enough to eat any yet 😂. We have chanterelle and my favourite, amethyst decever.
Thank you Donald! I am really hoping that it will start to grow/take off. I should have done this YEARS ago when I started off with Rod. Better late than never though, right?!
I really liked your camera in the basket shots. Those mushrooms look yummy. I have only harvested and eaten two species of fungus: puffball and morel. Puffballs smell like stinky socks when cooking them, but they taste good. Your chanterelles look delicious. Are they similar to shiitake?
Morels are to die for. They are the one mushroom that I could eat all by themselves. Especially by pan frying, they develop a nice crunchy texture! Gem Studded Puffballs were one of the first mushrooms I tried and I loved the marshmellowy texture, but they absolutely wrecked my stomach. They gave me some of the worse stomach cramps I have ever had, Dan however wasn't phased by them. I thought it might have been a one time thing, but I tried a small amount the following fall and it still was a no go. I find chanterelles have a more peppery taste, whereas matsutake (pines) are sweeter and really have that strong cinnamon scent and taste. Thanks for watching Ralph!
