I think Nick is so self aware that it’s a problem for him, I think he yearns to be able to enjoy something fun and simple without the voice in the back of his head saying “this is gay”. I think part of his personality is that he doesn’t fully invest himself into anything because it seems like a normie thing to do. In reality he should be one of the biggest comedians but he sets the bar high in his own mind and it would take a lot of work for him to take his shit to the level he wants it at and but he’s not willing to dive into it without getting self destructively meta about it. He’s probably been post modern so long that he craves that which he internally criticized.

Yeah I think you’re right, he’s just too stuck in his own head. Trying to get outside of that and enjoy something might actually help, but I really think he just needs to apply himself to something. He’s done it before with bodybuilding and woodwork and even getting this show put together, but I think he needs a more risky and ambitious project.

He obviously is only pushed by creative endeavors like when he kind of revived his brain with the beginning of TAFS but now it’s getting to a point where it is maintainable and no longer being built from the ground up. Hopefully he can channel discipline into stand up or writing because he’s a creative that is on and off with that career

I enjoyed listening to my close personal friend and confidante (Nikolai Mullenovich) expand on his difficulties enjoying Disney pig slop. I resonated with his experiences, which makes sense - as hr and I are so similar and very good (best) friends
I completely understand the sentiment Nick express. When your in a bad place you really are unable to enjoy thing that should rock your world or would have when you were a child, younger or just more bright eye. And the feeling of appreciating something you would have been immediately critical about in the wrong state of mind, is a gigantic milestone to self improvement/actualisation and healing, and really does feel great. 💪

I’m in a similar boat to Nick wrt not enjoying anything, and recently I started thinking that men are biologically not supposed to be single or childless at this age, something Marty says on True Detective (“past a certain age, a man without a family can be a bad thing”). You are either supposed to have a kid, who will occupy your entire mind and give your life meaning (which is attested to by everyone, from dead beats to billionaires), or you are supposed to leave for a faraway land to improve the welfare of your community by fighting an enemy tribe. It poses quite a conundrum for us gay guys. You can even see it with Tim Dillon. I’ve heard him talk about his Chinese godson/nephew more times than I can remember.
There will never be “the right time” to do it, right now is as good as any.
Adam is also right. He said he’d enjoy The Mandalorian “because it’s there”. You are not supposed to enjoy something that was made to inspire 12 year olds for what it is. You are supposed to do it surrounded by your family and friends. yeah, I'm gay -- like literally, bc I'm lacking enough motivation, or mental state, to actually pursue chicks in my thirties even though I've been single for a year. I'm probably projecting but it seemed like what Nick was talking about bc he brought up getting out of a relationship right at the end, and being primed or open to nice people who just want to enjoy your company and things with you. I literally was at this girl's house two days ago, hot Russian chick in her twenties, was talking to her, and I suddenly needed to sit down bc I was just tired. I hope you like the book.
