  • When it comes to keyword cannibalization in SEO, you don't want multiple pages of content focused on the same keyword. Search engines like Google are seeking the best possible resource on your website when someone types in a specific keyword. In this video, I will cover how to identify keyword cannibalization, how keyword cannibalization can impact your SEO strategy and ways to fix it as well. You may believe that more content and more pages of content is always better, but when there is a lot of overlap between topics and subtopics, you can actually hurt your rankings in the long run.

    Video Description:
    What is Keyword Cannibalization?
When multiple pages on your website are optimized for the same SEO keyword.
It can hurt your rankings to have several blog posts or pages focused on the same topic.
    Example of Keyword Cannibalization:
If I write the following 3 articles:
    - SEO Trends in 2018
    - SEO Trends in 2019
    - SEO Trends in 2020
It will actually hurt my rankings for the keyword 'SEO Trends' because I have 3 pages on my website focused on SEO Trends.
    How To Avoid Keyword Cannibalization:
    1. Create 1 Page: Write 1 article about a topic and keep it updated on a yearly basis. Never change the URL.
    2. 301 Redirects: If you have multiple articles targeting the same keyword, merge them into 1 article, set-up 301 redirects, and delete the old pages.
    3. Canonical URLs: Use the rel="canonical" tag for the page you prefer to be ranked in search engines.
    How To Find Keyword Cannibalization:
    - Content Metadata Audit: Export your posts & pages to review title tags, meta descriptions & focus keywords.
    - Create a Keyword Map: By mapping keywords to content, you can find pages that focus on the same keyword.
    - Google Search Console: You can review individual search queries and search queries for specific pages.
    - Google Site Search: Do a search in Google like this:
site:yourwebsite.com keyword to see ranking pages.

No, that won't have any negative impact if certain keywords are mentioned on each page. The main thing is to not create multiple pages based on 1 subject. For example, a massage therapist is better off having a page "10 Benefits of Massage Therapy" rather than having "6 Benefits of Massage Therapy" & "4 Reasons You Need Massage Therapy" both published.

I do. If I create a KTP for Home Sanitizing and Disinfecting and then two separate pages for Home Sanitizing and one for Home Disinfecting am I cannibalizing my keywords? I'm trying to explain to my team that these terms can exist in one KTP under Home Sanitizing and Disinfecting with the words home sanitizing and home disinfecting used interchangeably within the body of the text.

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I want to ask one question. If your product category page was ranking and getting clicks and impressions then why did you set canonical url to your blog page that didn't have any clicks? @SurfsidePPC

Surfside PPC, Thank You for an excellent video explaining Keyword Cannibalization! Most importantly, Thank You for the introduction to the Canonical URL feature! Great Job providing the Example of Keyword Cannibalization with the 3 similar titles... "SEO Trends 2018 - 2020". My Question is about the following Example showing what is NOT Keyword Cannibalization. You define Article Number 1 "Keyword Research Tutorial" as the Main Topic article. Article Numbers 2 - 5 are the Sub Topic articles. Should/Do all these Sub Topic Articles have the Canonical URL within them that point to the Main Topic article?

Question : i merged 2 pages together that were competing for the same keyword like you said, and added a 301 to the main page from the other one. My question is how long should i wait before completely deleting the old page with the 301? Google is still indexing the old page after the 301 was implemented. I made the merge a week ago. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am wondering whether a case written below is a keyword cannobalization or not. - A site selling cars have two distinct pages covering different subtopics of the car. 2 pages are ranked for one car’s main technology keyword, which is not the subtopics. In this case, is it also keyword cannibalization?

As long as the pages are not specifically targeting the same keyword, it should not be a major issue. I usually look at Google Search Console to see what pages are showing for specific search queries, and that should help keyword cannibalization problems.

Hi, we are building a regional website for a client, using mostly content from the company's existing .com website. We want to use a lot of the existing copy and messaging on the new website, which is on the .ae domain. Can we still build domain authority in the region for the new website? Even if we are using copied content from the original website?

I would recommend writing unique content, even if it is very similar.

How would this work for local service landing pages, So for example, you have a main category page on plumbers, which is optimised for plumbers near me, you also have a landing page for plumbers in New York, which is optimised for for plumbers in New York and plumbers near me - is this bad ? Both these pages rank 1&2 in Serps for the same keyword in this example - thanks
