The AFC has a QB problem. Thanks to Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, etc., GMs are ready to move if the guy isn't brilliant immediately which is stunting QB development.
The NFC is all about coaching. The top 7 all have brilliant coaching in some aspects and you need to hit on your hires to compete across this conference line.

Biggest thing is that QB development is a team game. No longer can you rely on an amazing 21 year old college QB to solely turn around an entire franchise.

    • @stealthiscool

That’s always been the case, turning around a franchise is a team effort. No amount of great QB play will turn things around if the executives and coaches aren’t also good and competent enough to build a good team and make sure that team has good coaching to maximise their potential.

    AFC North:
Steelers: excellent defense and great coaching. Nothing new here 😅
Ravens: Lamar continues to mature as a passer and Henry still had plenty of gas in the tank. The defense has underperformed with the loss of Patrick Queen but they will be a tough out in the playoffs.
Bengals: Burrow is probably the best passer in the league. Years of poor drafting and personnel decision of the defensive side of the ball mixed with a high injury toll produced the worst defense in the league. Paying Chase and fixing that defense will prove a challenging feat in one offseason.
Browns: Watson is cooked and the front office's refusal to move on and admit their mistake will ruin this team in the short term.

Also, despite his age, Aaron Jones was a huge upgrade for the Vikings and a great piece for them to balance out Jet and JA's passing game. AFC South:
Texans: Legitimate chance to be a contender over the next few years, but they are wasting an elite defense with an atrocious OL. If they address that this offseason, look out.
Colts: Owner's brain is fried from all the cocaine he's used over his life and the GM refuses to address the team's flaws. I think they run it back with Richardson again but they need change, preferably at GM.
Jags: Owner is absentee all year and either doesn't care about results or is incapable of hiring the right people. Not sure which is worse tbh. Regardless, Jags are quietly one of the bigger disasters of this season and need an exorcism of that front office that I'm not sure is coming.
Titans: They missed badly on Will Levis but there are bright spots. I fear they will throw the bag at Darnold this offseason instead of following through on the rebuild Carthon has started.

    NFC West:
Rams: Stafford and McVay are still damn good at their jobs and Puka Nacua is an absolute game wrecker. If injuries didn't shank them out of the gate this year, they'd be running away with this division.
Seahawks: The OL is abominable. Even if they limp into the postseason, you simply cannot win in January with such a poor level of play from the guys up front.
Cardinals: An anomaly. They have solid pieces rounding out the roster but just can't seem to consistently put it together. MHJ hasn't been the stud he was promised to be and I can't help but feel that held the offense back this year.
49ers: Purdy/Shanahan cannot compensate for key players missing and the offense doesn't function without Trent Williams. A year from Hell for the Niners between injuries and drama. Expect them to come out swinging next year.

    AFC West:
Chiefs: Call it dumb luck but they understand the assignment when it comes to situational football. The OL worries me but not enough to bet against Mahomes in the playoffs.
Chargers: Rome wasn't built in a day. They're on the right track but are still missing pieces, primarily on offense, before they take that next step. I expect a big jump from them next season.
Broncos: Sean Payton was right to ditch Wilson and the defense continues to be borderline elite. I'm concerned they overachieved this year and are setting up to disappoint next year unless they enter the offseason with urgency.
Raiders: Antonio Pierce is not an NFL HC and Telesco will lead them to ruin sooner than later. If they nail their coaching search though, a lot of their problems go away. Brock Bowers is already a great building block for the next regime.

Colts fan here, AR is oozing with talent and he’s looked sharp for his experience level and our piss poor team, our offense is either inconsistent or trash most weeks because o line loves penalties, WRs/TEs are never open, and JT is extremely inconsistent. If we cleaned house offensively, and got an OC that could call plays AR will be like Lamar Jackson with Andrew Lucks strength and arm in 2 years. People give Gus Bradley a hard time but he has made our defense formidable with practice squad guys and 3rd stringers especially in the secondary. Steichen loves to call Hail Marys every play and the whole offense basically relies on a young inexperienced QB to bail them out every game. Ballard is good at getting role players but refuses to get the playmakers in free agency. Steichen is a good HC bad OC. We need a good offensive coordinator that calls the plays and we need to go out and get a star TE and get Gus Bradly’s secondary some pieces. Lions: When healthy, this is the best team in football. They weren't just beating teams, they were destroying their opponents. Sadly, I think they are consigned to an early exit on account of their defense catching fire, but if anyone can overcome something like that it's MCDC.
Vikings: Between getting All Pro caliber play of out Sam 'Seeing Ghosts' Darnold and the defense actively making every OC look like a nimrod when playing them, safe to say this is the best coaching staff in the league.
Packers: They are a Top 5 NFC team that made the ill-advised mistake of being in a stacked division. Joe Barry's dismissal has turned the defense into a serious threat.
Bears: This term is thrown around in excess but the McCaskeys are genuinely football terrorists. Bears will seldom be relevant as long as they own the team and considering the measures taken to become majority owners in the first place....buckle up Chicago.

Hot Take: DC isn't going to overcome the defense injuries, because he's part of the reason why they're all broken. It's fun to see a team win 54-whatever, but if it comes at the cost of the well-being of your players, it's not worth it. Their team is stacked from a roster standpoint, but because their not a well run organization, their record reflects it. But the Vikings are doing this well because of how well run of an organization they are despite pretty much everyone thinking they would be like 4-13

    AFC East:
Bills: Can Josh Allen overcome suspect defense and questionable clock management from his HC? History says no, but this is also the best version of Allen we've ever seen.
Dolphins: They quietly lost a lot of talent on the lines this offseason and it showed. It's also beginning to look like McDaniels and Tua can't beat teams that they don't heavily outmatch. I don't think his seat is hot yet but it's warming up for sure.
Jets: Absolute disaster. From the true GM being a 17 year old to the washed QB who won't acknowledge he's a huge problem, there is little reason to hold out hope for the Jets.
Patriots: They found their QB. The roster is still absolutely terrible and Mayo seems out of his depth as HC. A slow and steady rebuilding is needed but I worry they will try and cut corners to maximize Maye's rookie deal.

  • @ghoulio

The biggest issue with drafting O-Lines isnt just drafting early. That doesnt really matter. The only thing that matters is the GM (and their teams) ability to actually identify the talent and then develop it. I say this is a Giants fan as we constantly draft linemen high and still have the worst O-Line in the league, because every GM we have is apparently completely unable to actually draft the line.

Bears woes on offense go back to the whole emphasis on RB and building the O-line. Sadly they thought having Swift/Johnson and Herbert in case of emergency was sufficient vs literally getting any of the other available RBs in Henry, Barkley, Jacobs or Jones, all of whom can break tackles and catch a ball out of the backfield. As for the O-line, their best lineman was a 1st round pick last year, but has health issues. Behind him is a 1st round talent they got in the 2nd round in 2021, who has even more health issues. Beyond that a lot of patch work. They’re fortunate to have a serviceable(when healthy) LT and their C after a bad start has stabilized, however, his early woes could also fall on having a “checked out” OG in Davis next to him. Once Davis was cut the interior line play got better.

But because the Broncos have a better record and because there's reason to believe that organization can do anything correctly, people are high on Nix - meanwhile the Bears have a bad record and there's zero faith that they'll ever be able to turn it around because Bears, so people are down on Caleb.

  • @wicklebee
    @wicklebee 2 години тому

The main thing I've learned is that the QB landscape is changing and teams that are stuck in the past are not going to find success. If your QB takes too many sacks, it's time to get a younger guy that can avoid sacks under center. We saw the Commanders do just that and they significantly improved. Never trust a QB who hasn't played football in over a year as your main starter. Rodgers is bad this year (and was bad in his last season after the real MVP wasn't catching his passes), Watson hasn't played like a starter since the Browns went for him and this season was even worse. We saw a resurgence of Joe Flacco because he wasn't the starter, he was a midseason signee with something to prove, and this year he didn't have as good of an OL. It's truly just time to move on from trying to settle with a pocket passer if you can't keep them protected.
Yes I mostly say this as the Seahawks fan who constantly talks about the Seahawks needing to move on from Geno, but still. It matters.
