Although great, they are insanely expensive to maintain. We also had a problem with killing whales, which often resulted in massive damage to the ships. We had six ships and often at least one would be down for long periods with multi-billion dollar price tags. Another problem was the top heavy crewing of the ships. With a crew of fewer than 30, there were too many officers and top ranking NCO's. To be clear, you do not want to spend decades working your way to a top level only to have to scrub the deck like an E-1 because of understaffing. Everyone onboard had to be highly trained because these are very advanced ships that require top quality specialists. Then there is another problem... they do NOT do well in cold weather. That is why most of them are in tropical locations, like the Florida Keys. When we hit a whale the ship gets crumpled and twisted like a beer can. BUT! When we hit ice, it was even more catastrophic with ripping-off of struts and way more hull damage. Plus! If you just get a little ice into the foil intake for the waterjet propulsion (aka: propulsors), the entire system shatters, with complete replacement of the marine gas turbine and entire propulsor assembly.
Look's like a brilliant boat.
Wow
Sounds like the kind of thing the Coast Guard could be interested in
I was part of the US Navy hydrofoil squadron (PHMRON2-MLSG) based out of Key West, Florida.
It's a movie
Looks like the old Manly Hydrofoils from 40 years ago.
Wonder how effective this boat would be in coatal Black Sea operations.
About as effective as ours was in the Navy.
