- Fresh out of the box we have two brand new Rails Exclusive A5 Pacific Tanks that have joined company with Custom Weathered 5167.
The latter is on an extended visit from a good customer in Belgium and received a polished / in use finish in the weathering studio. In stunning Great Central lined green livery, albeit with LNER number and branding, this is another superb Rails Exclusive model and significantly is the debut 00 Gauge locomotive by Sonic models.
Meanwhile, the two black arrivals are just as handsome looking as the green machine and a plethora of detail differences between all 3 is immediately evident reflecting their respective eras.
Most obvious are varying chimneys, smoke box doors & dart / handles, top feed arrangements, lamp iron positions, whistle positions, bunker rails and the inclusion of cab windows on the black locomotives.
Sonic Models and @railsofsheffield have nailed it with these long lived and big Great Central tank engines. Furthermore, the A5 is an inspired choice as the real locos were imposing, characterful and somewhat enigmatic in that none were preserved. Even the wheel arrangement is relatively unusual for a tank engine after the pre grouping era. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any Pacific tanks that have steamed in preservation days 🤔
I’m a BR steam fan through and through and I love this early crest example, but both of these smart LNER liveries are extremely attractive and are beautifully executed on the models.
Welcome back. You've been missed.
Lovely job, as ever.
Bit of rock and roll on the green one.
Thanks,
Bob
I would have rejected the green one for poor running qualities. It spoils a superb paint job and would really bug me.
Great looking locos on a great looking layout!
Welcome back hope all is well nice to see new stuff.
The A5 (9N as I call them) was a beautiful loco, how fitting that it should receive such a beautiful high quality model. Sonic Models did a great job for their first ever OO locomotive.
Yes indeed, very impressive debut of an imposing tank engine.
Stunning
They’re very nice models, well done Sonic.
Great to see another Neville Grove video after a gap. I see from the comments that I'm not the only one who's missed a regular fix. Superb weathering, camerawork, editing and then the final atmospheric touch with the expertly synced sound... it's just such a pleasure to watch the trains roll by!
Cheers MrT - been too long I know, but thanks for all the kind words and generous observations 👍
Very long time no see. I was starting worrying,🤔. So glad to have you back🎉
That’s extremely kind thank you, we’ve recently moved house so things have been hectic!
@@NEVILLEGROVE I hear you. At least your layout is set in modules, I surmise. Not the case with my massive H0 one in my son's house attic...(the N one is under the bed in my flat, just a bit better...)🙄
I've got one of those LNER black ones with DCC Sound. I've only tried running it once on my Club's dc Children's Layout. It doesn't like dc at all. Needs the CV values tweaking I suspect.
Hi Neville Grove, I'm so sorry if I asking this question or bothered you.
Are the sound effects you used like Peter Handford's Railway Recordings are allowed to be used?
No problem. I have written permission from the kind chaps at Old Thundridge Records to use the clips 👍
I've been a little slow to find your channel and website Steve - but what a joy they are! You have a fabulous layout and a selection of wonderfully inspiring videos, which I've thoroughly enjoyed wading through over the last couple of days. They are all beautifully and cleverly shot and with superb sound added. I've struggled for a while to come up with a layout design that is both prototypically plausible and that includes mainline open spaces and constricted urban areas - but you've done it with Neville Grove! I was particularly fascinated with your Thompson A2/2 video - that's a Hornby model that I've steered away from - the prototype is a little odd looking and straight out of the box the model seemed plain and didn't inspire me - perhaps partly due to the pale shade of BR green which Hornby have used. However after your weathering those machines are transformed, they look characterful, purposeful and very impressive in your video. I'd now like one! My wallet has gone into hiding! Thanks for displaying your fine work.
Welcome back ! Most enjoyable video as always, but disappointed in these wobblin' Sonic tank engines. Egg-shape wheels ? All the best
More likely a slightly bent con rod, had it on many a model before and is easy enough to fix. Couldn’t notice it with the naked eye, other wise would have looked into it.
Hey, Welcome Back! And what a great video! The A5s are one of my favorite tank engines!
That last BR section could have come straight out of a BTF clip. Breathtaking everything
Thanks very much Alan, glad you enjoyed.
So what were these, tank engine for? Were they used for express services as Pacific or Atlantic tank engines in early era or local passenger and mix traffic locos?
I think originally they were built for fast services but were soon displaced by more powerful locos. There were still very capable though and lasted a long time on secondary and local services.
He’s back with the milk
Thanks for hanging around 👍
Another superb video Steve, you never let us down with your expertise in producing these stunning productions which are always a pleasure to watch, cheers nige 👍
Thanks a lot Nige, glad to get one uploaded again at last!
Always a joy to watch your videos my friend. Again top sounds and edits. Pure steam bliss. 😊
I love they layout and the models and video.
👍🚂🚞🚞🚞🚞🚞👍
The wobble on the green one could be due to a bent con-rod.
I had this problem on a Hornby A4 that wiggled along the track.
Looking from underneath, it was easy to straighten the bent rod to match the straight rods on the other side.
Absolutely adore your layout!! The perfect blend of town and countryside, hight and depth!!! Your filming and photography is outstanding!!!
The weathering on your stock is magnificent! All round fabulous layout!!! Well done!!!👏👏👏👏👍
My second comment is about your rag wipe gloss finish. When you zoom in, its obvious to me that you have sprayed the gloss varnish on. I suspect you are using an acrylic medium which dries that bit too fast too level out to a glass finish.
If you are interested, my 'How to' videos for Carriage varnishing #076 and Hush Hush Loco varnishing #077-2 show you how without the tedious time consuming masking. This is the loco one with links to the others. The Description Section lists all the kit and products :
