    Interesting. So what explanation does Rome give for a street level Medieval settlement built ontop an ancient Roman Imperial age settlement now being 9m (29.6ft) underground? The Medieval Period ended 500 years ago. What exactly raised the street level 29.6 ft?

      Constant flooding of the Tiber bringing silt with it, and nobody to clear the mess. Also, the collapse of large buildings and the debris then left to accumulate. A city shrinking from one million inhabitants to a few thousand leaves ruin behind it.
