2024 Saudi Arabian GP race analysis by Peter Windsor

- OK. It was another Red Bull one-two. Max Verstappen was his usual, devastating self; and Sergio Perez drove exceptionally well, particularly as he carried from lap seven a five-second penalty for an unsafe pit stop release. Behind, though, it was spectacular: Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Oscar Piastri fought hard - as did McLaren's Lando Norris and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton; Fernando Alonso finished P5 for Aston - but his team-mate/owner, Lance Stroll, hit the wall, inducing the Safety Car. Capping it all, however, was Oliver Bearman, standing-in at the last minute for Carlos Sainz and finishing a stunning seventh for Ferrari. Peter Windsor looks back at this drive (11:35:00) and at the evening's other key elements.

What I really liked was when the broadcast showed the driver view from Hamilton's car behind Lando. Lewis would catch him on the long straights, nearly overtaking Lando at turn 1. But as soon as they reached turn 4, the McLaren absolutely took off. Lando nearly pulled a 1.5 sec gap in 10-15 seconds from turn 4 to 11/12. That McLaren has some serious high speed cornering.
Your right it was insane to watch onboard
Yeah noticed that, it looked almost F1 game like when you play against 110 Max Verstappen
@@pakoutac it was so noticeable watching onboard with Lewis it seemed surreal lol
Suzuka will be very strong for them
I noticed too. McLaren has a deficit in terms of straight-line speed, but they always managed to pull away in the 1st sector
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Alonso is making lemonade with the Aston car. Superb performance.
@@Trippenzoidwhat’s Alonso got to do with Hamilton’s race comparative to Russell? Also Ham and Rus had different strategies and if you don’t just look at the classifications you would know that Hamilton’s race pace was better than Russell but that’s too much info for you to handle 🤦♂️
Max’s end radio was a damning inditement of RB’s dominance… he said his tyres were cold he was cruising that much.
Cold tyres because of overtaking backmarkers..

Disappointing race for Alonso? Aston Martin is behing McLaren and Mercedes in race pace.
Ahead of Mercedes for sure. George couldn't catch him
@@rohullah5829George was always behind 1.1 to 1.6 seconds tells you they were faster just couldn't get past him because it was a difficult track to overtake.
Saying that Alonsos race was dissapointing is a big stretch, considering the car is the 5th best in racepace after bahrain, finishing ahead of both mercs and lando is a win for the team
But he's not a Britt 🫣
@@johnleven8907 It's not that. Peter loves Max, Charles, Piastri, none of whom are British. Peter dislikes Fernando because he doesn't consider him a short corner driver. He always states that without providing any speed traces etc., but it forms the basis of every opinion he has about a racing driver.
He held his own against George a long time and that's enough for me. I wouldn't George in my mirrors for a moment.
yep, this was certainly not Peter's best commentary overall. He seemed distracted.
@@slartibartfast2649Peter dislikes Fernando for the same reason all Lewis fanboys do…..2007. Everything else is just an excuse to justify the dislike.
You can tell how dominant RB are when Checo can finish an easy 2nd even with a penalty.
And for the love of god, someone in Aston please pluck up the courage and tell Lawrence Stroll _"Your son is shite"_
He needs to go and asap. Just imagine how many good drivers there are to replace that spoiled rich kid. And how many points AM could gain if they had another driver capable of scoring points.
I bet they had tons more in the bag too, but don't want to do what they did last year when the FIA changed the rules and raised the minimum floor height to try and close the gap n slow down the RB19. Re watch the broadcast and while they were showing the battle between lando/hamilton and the guys in the backfield, look at perez time. He extended the gap to Leclerc behind him from 2-3 seconds to nearly 6 seconds in just under 2 laps. It was crazy. Soon as they hit 7 seconds, both Max and Perez stopped their push and just maintained the same position. I bet they could've pulled a 20 sec gap if they kept pushing. and IMO Max confirmed it in the in car comms after the race saying that the hards were going cold at the end of the race. They weren't nearly pushing hard enough to keep the temps up in the tire. That RB20 is magically light on its tires compared to the rest of the field.
Whoever going to say that, they better have another job lined up.
Checo will never get credit, if he has a bad weekend and is out of 2nd he sucks and should be replaced because its the " minimum " with that car,if he finishes second he still sucks because he only finished there because of the car, if he somehow beat Max he still sucks and Max will be claimed overrated, maybe you know, Max is GOAT tier and Checo is a great driver just not enough to beat a GOAT over a season.
someone should find him a long boogery window to lick so he can be distracted from F1, giving someone with someone worthy a chance.
I'm sorry but calling Alonso's performance disappointing is just ridiculous. He split the Mclarens, beat out both Mercedes, and was barely behind Oscar at the end. If he'd gotten the overtake done on Piastri at the beginning then yeah, maybe he'd have one more position but 5th is still a more than decent result for being in the 3rd-4th fastest car. A lesser driver would have fallen back to 7th or 8th. Could he have gotten the set-up better? Maybe, but maybe not. I think anything higher than 4th for AM would have been a pipe dream and they knew that, and even 4th would have taken something really exceptional. That's still a steady improvement, though they still suffer from being basically a 1 driver team. Stroll for sure showed us all again how much he's holding that team back with careless errors and poor driving, and lackluster pace.
Honestly I don't understand Peter these days. Last weekend he called Charles's race poor but never mentioned the fact that he had brake issues. There's some sought of bias in his analysis this year.
I think he was thinking that based on his quali performance
I gotta say , your right about stroll, his pace and performance was embarrassing , give it up already mister stroll, and what ever you do going forward, don’t get into media

I had a different take on Alonso's "I'm in qualifying mode" comment. As I see it, he basically told his team: "shut the f*** up, I can't go any faster".
I was thinking the same 👍
Exactly! He wasn't bragging, he was letting them know he was at the limit.
Same. Wasn't being a hero, was hanging on for dear life.
I concur
Spot on!
Awful read of Alonso’s message. He clearly meant that there was nothing else left to squeeze in that car, as it was obvious when he “kissed” the wall.
He spent the whole race keeping distance from Russell, he made it clear in another message that the McLaren’s were in a different league.
It is when he qf 4th
As others have said, clearly Alonso's "quali mode" comment was about hanging on ahead of Russell and not about mounting a charge to catch Piastri. 🤷🏻♂

Aston Martin is really quick over a single lap but right now struggles a lot in race pace with tire deg, even if Jeddah was quite better than Bahrain. I think Max, Leclerc, Piastri, Fernando and Russel maximized all their options this weekend. That was the overall performance order of the cars around Jeddah. I think Aston was quite clearly 5th fastest car during the race but much much closer to Merc/McL than in Bahrain. Quali pace and a good lap by Fernando paid off.
Mr. Windsor should know that. Alonso's P5 was brilliant.
@@docmccoy9813 He knows very well. It was not Fernando who didn’t extract the maximum this weekend…
Assuming that the AM is a good race car when the only precedents we have say otherwise (both races) is quite unrealistic.
The Alonso performance disappointing?, this is becoming ridiculous Peter, you should seek help.
I think when he refers to Alonso as disappointing he means the team also considering what they throw at these cars and they just don’t seem to take that next step, Lance needs to go for that team to move forward though as you need two decent drivers in the team to work off data and improve
Whats crazy is that from turns 4 to 12, its impossible to overtake if you know how to defend it. You could drop 2-3 seconds of your normal pace during that section and the guys behind you have zero room to overtake if you position yourself correctly, as seen from what Magnusson did.

Apologies, if that's already been noted.
Excellent review, as usual. Just one small point: Charles Leclerc didn't take the fastest lap from Max Verstappen, but from Lewis Hamilton.
1. Leclerc 1:31.632
2. Hamilton 1:31.746
3. Verstappen 1:31.773
Maybe a small comfort for Mercedes, that 0.027 second difference...
Charles achieved the best result he could with good management of his pace over a very long second stint. Loved that he got Fastest Lap pipping MV by 0.1 sec. If only the Ferrari could find 0.4 sec or so then we would have a contest. Till then chill.
Agreed, I think that Ferrari still has pace to be found and will be better when it’s developed further but what has that RedBull still got to come? I don’t believe Ferrari built this car to compete for the championship this year but built it as development for the next car when they believe they can compete so they are doing very well. Charles looks to be maturing as a driver this year, he always had good one lap pace but never got the best out of a race car, he needs a mature driver next to him to learn from which might be the reason they signed Hamilton
An excellent race by Fernando Alonso, not a disappointing one. Then what about Russell and Hamilton in the factory Mercedes behind him...

I feel like the pit stop rules should slightly change to: at least one pit stop in which you switch compound tyres and a stop under normal racing conditions. So in today’s case, everyone who stopped under SC conditions would have had to stop another time, but Lando and Ham would have been fine with just their one stop.

@Peter Did you notice Max's comments after race, how he lost the temp on tires after reaching the end of pack. Also Bottas commented they didn't get Hards performing. Sauber too slow for the tire temp cap?
As long as Checo keeps doing what he's doing now, there's no way he's going to be replaced. And lets not forget he brings in a lot of money too because of Carlos Slim. Bear man left a lasting impression.

Peter, it's good to have your analysis videos etc. But can you settle with your hate for Fernando Alonso? I mustn't be the only one seeing the blatant bias/dislike?
There is a historical British contingent of Alonso haters, some of them journalists, and Windsor ticks all the boxes.
Re: Olie Bearman - I think I was a tad unkind about his qualifying performance in that it was not as spectacular as Schumacher's debut at Spa etc., but with hindsight, he showed a maturity that belies his youth. I recall seeing really good F3000 drivers mortgaging their grandmother's homes to get a drive in F1 with back of the grid teams and justifying the cost because 'It's F1' and then being unable to prove anything (despite their best efforts) because the car was so bad - think Perry McCarthy and Roberto Moreno at Andrea Moda in '92. But Bearman had a drive with a top team and really earned the Driver of the Day award. He didn't stuff it in the wall, he improved substantially from his start position, and he was neither fazed nor intimidated by the more-experienced drivers he diced with.
I don’t think we will ever see another Schumacher moment like that again as these cars have evolved so much and are quite a different beast to drive and understand now especially regarding the aero aspect

Really? The team that's made the most improvement is McLaren?! Need to remind you that Ferrari is 2nd in the standings, and if it wasn't for Sainz's health issue, they would be 3-4, for sure.
Red Bull is dominant on and off track. They want it all. Even the gossips... no Mercedes, no Ferrari, but again RB. So unfair😁
They are not dominant in TV coverage! Magnussen did a great job for HAAS in that aspect creating a 6 car train.
Seems the youngsters that can drive the shaithe off pointy cars are going to win in future!
Peter has never liked Fernando Alonso much. Not sure why that is....
Why is nobody talking about penalties.... Perez Infront or behind Leclerc not important he would overtake no matter what, but Magnusen with 20 sec penalty holding back 4-5 drivers with super aggressive drive so his teammate can take points...its crazy not to have some sort of a mechanic to force a driver to serve his penalty
Yuki Means business Ric showed up in his leisure wear !!
Yuki going from p9-p14 means business does it?🤡
@@Chris-sf2cp at least 1 driver shows potential I guess you can say ric was consistent quali 16 & finish 16 🇯🇵
