Glad you brought up Apollonius, Tactus is one of my favorite characters, willing to get down and dirty, but also a superior gold bloodline, also one of the few characters that doesn't just bend around darrow at all times.
I really like Kavax. Just a giant, boisterous teddy bear who is super loyal. And an overall great dude. Head of a major house but will throw himself into danger to save his friends no questions asked. And doesn't bat an eye when he learns about Darrow.
I'm in the process of reading this series right now. I finished Golden Son last week and holy shit...it's intense. I don't see how anyone could say it's YA. I needed a break for a minute so I'll start the 3rd one in a week or two. Although this video has made me want to jump back in it!
Yes! More Red Rising content! I completely agree about Roque, such an amazing tragic character. And the scene you're referring to in Morning Star with him is definitely one of the best moments in the whole series!
This is easily my favorite series, Red Rising is the book that got me back into reading and turned me into an avid reader. I’m over due for a reread of the entire series... my favorite characters are Cassius, Apollonius, Kavax and I’m right there with you Victra is my number 1 she’s an incredible character!
I will take this opportunity to thank you for pushing me over the edge with Red Rising. I started it last year and I am currently on Dark Age and really love the series. Before you championed the series I was always put of with the Hunger Games blurp and comparisions. My faves are: Darrow, Sevro, Victra, Ragnar and Fitchner
It’s so comforting to find real book people. People that love reading and read all kinds of book: I run into too few in my day to day life. Also, this series has improved with each book... Dark Age blew me away!! The scene towards the end with Victra and Volga and the Red Hand 😳😳🤯🤯
I'm a little scared of watching the video because I want to go in not knowing too much but popped by to say I ordered the first 3 books. I'm really looking forward to reading this after all the great reviews!
As will I (whenever I finish Dune that is). I recall outright despising it a few years ago when I first read it. Most likely due to purely subjective reasons on my part, not because of any flaws within the narrative itself.
Nothing gives me as much joy as seeing a new video from Mike. I only read the first book, Red Rising. Plan on reading the rest this year. Brought all the books in the series that are out in January or your recommendation. The first book was awesome.
When I was 17 I felt like my parents didn't know anything. When I was 25 I was amazed at how much they had learned in that short time... :-D :-D I love Red Rising. When I found it I was surprised as I struggle to find interesting modern sci-fi, having read the old giants but Red Rising fit in well, I think.
I just typed in Red Rising hoping to see any information on book 6 and saw you uploaded this video nice. Also your channel was the one who got me to read this series now its easily in my top 5 of all time.
Thank you Mike for introducing me to this series.. just finished Golden Son and it is one of the best books I’ve ever read. You have my gratitude my Goodman! Bloodydamn amaZing
Great review, I enjoyed it a lot and it's really fun to hear what other fans has to say about the books! Having an affinity for wholesome but powerful characters guided by ethics and emotions, I love Mustang, Kavax and Darrow. On the more crazy fun side, I really enjoy Sevro, The Jackal, Victra and Apollonius. Nero and Octavia are fun as just these cold, calculated embodiments of the narcissistic society. And lastly, Cassius is just such a great character that really grows on you and is so human when he's torn between the narcissistic parts of society, vanity, pride, ethics, brotherhood, redemption, and maturing.
always here for more red rising content. Ragnar is a top 3 character for me, that guy just packs an emotional punch to the series and it wouldn't be the same without him. Surprised to not see Mustang anywhere here on the list, although thinking back to some of the scenes in book 2 i kind of get it
YES. By far my favorite series. If the movie/series is done correctly, I think it can be as big as Star Wars! I’ve been binging content on Red Rising cause the series is so good.
My favourite characters(apart from Darrow): -Daxo au Telemanus -Deanna of Lykos(Darrow's mother) -Victra au Julii -Sevro au Barca -Tactus au Valii-Rath But, to be completely honest. There's rarely a character I don't love. This has turned into my favourite saga after all. I've readed its books and listened the audiobooks several times... in three languages.
I just finished reading the latest book in the series and it is amazing. It was kinda difficult to get used to the first person, present tense; and the first book isn't as good as the rest of the series, but boy is it great. The story is the one of the most intense things I've read and I am looking forward to the next book.
I mentioned this on another video about it. I've read the trilogy three times and recently read the last two books. One of my all-time favorite series with some of my favorite characters. I think my top characters in this series are Sevro and Ragnar, but the characters are so well-written and there are plenty to choose from. Mustang is pretty great, too.
Back as promised ;) and to be honest, I know you were a bit sad at people waiting but I am still glad I did. Especially considering the death count in this book, hearing of and knowing who are key players through the series might have spoiled my experience a little having already heard of their importance/longevity. Awesome picks though, and having been back and watched your reviews, it was so obvious you’d pick Victra. Definite crush happening there, and I don’t blame you, I feel the same! I do quite like Mustang though, she’s super strong and reminds me of my lovely lady sometimes. I also like the Jackal as a quite unlikely big player considering his family situation.
I haven’t read Iron Gold or Dark Age yet but loved the first three. Mustang is hands down my favorite character, she kicks so much ass and is great partner to Darrow. The Jackal is the best “love to hate” character I’ve ever read. He is such a back-stabbing bastard and I love it.
The second best series I've ever read, only behind ASOIAF. Both series have a lengthy character roster, yet so many of them in both series are beautifully fleshed out. Even the ones that aren't are at the very least interesting. Also, totally agree with you about Roque. I'm loving these videos Mike. Cheers.
So I’m torn on this series. I loved the first part of book 1. Once the “institute” started I was bored for the rest of the book. Book 2...quite honestly I don’t remember most of it. The whole thing was just Meh...except for when they went back to his home. Book 3 though...I LOVED it! I liked it so much I am afraid to mess the happy thoughts I ended on with the 2nd trilogy...we’ll see though.
The 2nd trilogy is amazing in my opinion, but I really like grim dark realistic things are going to hell type books because personally I feel like it shows the reader who the characters truly are. If you don’t want the happy ending of morning star ruined then the 2nd trilogy may not be for you, shit escalates.
This has been on my radar! I have a couple books in the series already. But I may wait to read if you are going to do a read along in a lead up to the release of book 6. Looking forward to it!
No love for Tactus? I feel like he has an excellent redemption arc, showing the vices of the golds while also generating symphony when his upbringing and brothers are explained. Plus his fate is quite sad but goes to show the ruthlessness and why one of the characters on your list is feared & respect..
I'm reading Red Rising right now. I DNFed it back when I got an ARC of it, but I thought I'd give it another try since my reading tastes have changed a lot since then.
Really enjoying this series ( on your recommendation ) - I've almost finished Golden Son having only started reading it 3 days ago. I plan to move swiftly on to book 3 then will likely wait until Pierce Brown releases book 6 before continuing with Iron Gold and Dark Age.
I have the final 200 pages of morning star to go. I’ve struggled with this series soooo much. I just haven’t been able to connect with Darrow. A lot of good side characters though.
Yeah I also try to get everybody I meet to read it haha, idk if you have mentioned it before but what is your favourite of the saga, mines kind of hops between golden son and dark age, FYI ephraim is an extremely underrated character, really wasn't a fan at first but damn did he win me over hard by the end of book 5
Kavax will always be #1 for me. Pierce Brown has an absolute gift for creating characters with very, very distinct personalities, and Kavax is such a gem. Appolonius had the coolest introduction in the series imo., though. ***SPOILERS*** Dude essentially turned the most infamous, submerged, hell-like prison in the Solar System, and turned it into a mini paradise with Pinks, gardens, a gym etc. and you walk into the room with him playing violin naked like a virtuoso.
About to finish Iron Gold. Honestly not a huge fan of it. I have about 200 pages left but there has been too much world building for “technically” book 4 of the series. It is picking up now though. Not sure I like the multiple point of view thing but that may be because I find some of them a bit annoying. Planning on wrapping up the series later this month
I’ll never understand people saying he’s a Gary Stew when Cassius Exists, and hates his guts and nearly spilled them in the first book. Or how he constantly fumbled around with his bad leadership because he thought he knew best. (See Titus, His Treatment of Roque and treating House Mars like servants)
also the perfect protagonist trope is based on there being no explanation for them being good at things but there is tons of time spent showing us how Darrow is literally transformed into the perfect genetic being. And then on top of that he still has failures and has to learn new skills to overcome smarter and more skilled opponents.
I mostly agree with your picks. The whole Au Telemanes family is badass and Ragnar and Sevro also are absolute favorites. The only one I disagree with is Victra. I don't hate her but she also isn't a favorite. I just feel kinda neutral towards her
No love for Mustang? Yeah, I'll probably wait for the last book to come out and just binge them. One thing I'm wondering, why does Pierce feel the compunction to make each book longer? Not that I mind, but it seems like he's doing it on purpose
I don't really like Cassius. In the beginning I thought he was a pompous ass. He then slowly started to form a brotherhood with Darrow and I started to see him in a new light but then when he found out that Darrow killed Julian (which he HAD TO) He completely turned on him. It was kill or be killed. How could Cassius not understand that? I get it was his brother and that Darrow kept it from him but he didn't even let Darrow explain anything. He went straight to trying to end him. After that I started to dislike him again lol Thoughts anyone? I'd love to hear someone else's perspective! Edit to add: I have only read book 1

Interesting that you think that Kvothe is a perfect character, when he's exactly like you described Darrow. Not only that, but we're reading Kvothe's tragedy in both books, so we know (and we can see in books 1 and 2) a lot of his mistakes and glaring flaws.
I think my favourite character list would definitely qualify for being a little bit controversial. 1. Lysander 2. Darrow 3. Diomedes 4. Romulus 5. Ephraim The characters in this series are absolutely incredible though, and my favourite kind of characters are those who are complex and can leave you with a variety of feelings because they themselves are diverse and flawed and very human. My list reflects that a good deal I think.
@@kyrilson71 I am glad that you looked it up per tags. Though as someone who has read the series, to label this as young adult is incorrect. Victra for the win. Not only badass and ruthless but loyal and compelling. Best character in the book along with Sevro.
Victra in prego battle armor: Priceless

I love them all but Mustang, Victra, and Sevro always comes to mind first though.
