      Strangely enough, a small "A" next to the date on a US bill usually means it's the second issue in a particular series. Unlike the dates on coins, dates on US bills don't indicate the year it was issued. Instead, the date indicates when a particular "series" was first started.
      Up till 1974, a "series" normally included all bills with a particular design. The first bills in a series had no letter by the date. When a new Secretary of the Treasury or US Treasurer was appointed, an A would be added to the date. If another officer was appointed the letter would change to a B, and so on. The most extreme example was the 1935 series of $1 silver certificates. The same design was used from 1935 to 1965 and the series letters went up to H.
      In 1974 the policy was changed so that a new series date would be used whenever a new Secretary of the Treasury takes office, and a letter is added only when a new Treasurer is appointed. Because of that, series letters now rarely go beyond B or C.

      There were 5 different 1969 issues on the $1. (1969, 69A, 69B, 69C, 69D) 4 different on the other different denominations. All depends on issues, printing runs from 1969-1974. Nixon's term of office. Some Series 1963A notes were printed in 1969 as that series was being finished. The $1 1963B "Barr" notes were printed in the year 1969 (First 6 months) as transitional notes due to Secretary of the Treasury Barr's one month term in the last days of the Johnson administration. Quite a few of these older bills had some real short press runs. And they can command a premium depending on condition, serial number block/combination or star note/denomination.

    So ive been into Numismatics for about 7 years now and well just say ive already logged or invested more hours than one would spend obtaining their bachelors degree. I didnt limit myself to just collecting RPMMs or DDOs on just Lincoln cents or J nickels ect... So my knowledge is across the board... Anyways I just wanted to say you are missing tons of notes with ladders and radars or possibly miss matching serial numbers even ink bleeds are pretty decent in value... Have you heard of coolnotes.com they pretty much deal in all note varieties... Check it out if you havent yet... Keep up the hunt my fellow numismatic hunter... Oh yah ive probably got over 65,000-70,000 error and variety coins of all denominations and am just now starting to look for groups to join and get them sent in for grading to get them into collectors hands.....

      Deb Brumfield a star note is when a dollar was made and it had a huge mistake or just got ripped during the making and then the next dollar they make for that one has a star on it showing that the last one had a mistake and apparently they are worth a ton of money.

      @@liaml9064. No, a star note reprsents a star at the end saying that number code was already made but thet put a star at the end so you know they made two of the same ones.

      I have done the VIP tour at the BEP twice - the star notes are extra notes they have at the last process step in printing. If a strap (bundle of 100 notes) has an issue, they pull the bad strap and replace it with a strap of star notes. I am not sure why they they replace the bad strap with a star strap, but might have something to do with how the system packages the finished currency.

    Back in high school I worked at one of the local food joints, one day an older gentleman came in and paid for his food with a 1928 $5. Wasn't gunna let that slip away, bought it from the register, still have it to this day. Probably not worth much since the bill itself is pretty browned from age, but its still really cool.

      Hi! I don't know much about being a philalist (sp?), but I think that is a "Silver Certificate" and not just a $5 bill. Do you mean the date it was made is 1928? I forgot when paper money changed from having the "Silver Certificate" name on them to just being a dollar. Look to see if it says "Silver Certificate". I think the last of that was in the 1950's. If I were you I'd have it appraised by 3 different appraisers to come up with the real value.

      Series of 1928. not sure if it is a silver certificate, it doesn't state anywhere on the bill that it is. The only things I can tell you is that the seals are red, and it says "United States Note" instead of "Federal Reserve Note". it also says on the bottom "Will pay to the bearer on demand five dollars"

      Hi! I just hope you have something very valuable and you can sometime when it's convenient get 3 appraisals and average between them. The only coin collecting I ever did was when I was about 13 and 14 and only for a few years. I would think a paper bill from so many years ago, being that paper is fragile, it could at least have a potential to be worth something significant. I don't know what I'm talking about. I had thought that all money before the last "Silver Certificate" was backed by silver at least for a while and before that was backed by gold. I don't know when they started printing money that was backed by nothing. Maybe once they didn't have enough gold in Fort Knox they changed to silver then to nothing since the last year of the Silver Certificates. Now days with the computer age maybe there are ways you can even find out basically what your $5 bill could be worth. 1928 is to me very old. Also I think any kind of paper oxidizes or whatever in open air. If you can get a mylar or clear plastic type of pocket coin collectors use. I did it for a bran new $5 bill way back when but it is buried in my possessions right now. I think coin shops sell those holders or probably easy to find on the internet. I hope you find out its value, a very worthy venture in my opinion (for what that's worth ha!). I had a job at an old youth camp and was raking leaves and found a 1910 quarter dollar. A coin shop, once I made it to Minneapolis, said was a very rare quarter dollar blank that got stamped from a copper blank. He said a coin like that would make the covers of coin magazines. It was a one man collector who was in the yellow pages. It was funny as he started to act as though he doubted me in a way like he thought I'd stolen it. Another shop was in an actual store space. The owner had a top notch scale and right away said it looks like copper just because it was in the weather for 80 years (this was back in 1991 about I think). It equaled the exact weight of that particular year. Millions of them were made, and it was only worth maybe a few cents ha! He said in 1910 they used in the alloy a ratio that really favored the copper that year, thus the red copper look to the weathered coin. He also said a lot of guys with metal detectors bring coins to him and often with so many years in the elements they are not worth anything. So it really pays to try 3 sources like I did. I remember another grounds worker was raking and found a very nice 1940 mercury dime. The silver I guess doesn't weather so bad and it looked like new. A coin shop owner in Duluth said with his metal detector along the shores of Lake Superior found an 1812 gold piece. He didn't say what that was worth. I think metal detecting would be fun however some are indiscriminate and ruin archaeological sites. I better stop or this gets long... but I hope you do tops with your very old bill!

    • @alphadiecast
      @alphadiecast  6 років тому +2

      Victoria LeAnne it all depends on what size the bill is like $1 star note can be sold for five bucks and $100 star note can be sold for 130 but it all depends also on the serial number that's a whole nother story
