It's usually only faked when they pick it up via a security code word and not the ID at all. Since he didn't specify that (I believe only MoneyGram allows that kind of money pickup) then it's probably his legitimate name and city... The thing is you don't even realize how common names are. I live in a relatively small city and there are 8 others with my incredibly obscure name. First< middle and last name letter for letter.

I almost fell for this scam when I was a sophomore in high school. I asked what the process was and how it exactly works, and "she" said "her" dad owned the Western Union and could slip out extra cash. Really glad I didn't fall for it, ha.

I'm not.. they SOUND like the TYPE of PEOPLES that see these videos and decide to practice the scams themselves. That's why they make mistakes like that and go after non-technical tactics. Second-hand scammers taking your call while panhandling across the walmart parking lot where they park an RV.

lol Nice one. I had a brilliant one on the phone yesterday. I could almost hear him shit himself lol. I took a guess at his town and street in India and must have got it right. He screamed something at his colleagues and hung up. Something like 40% operate in the same street in Kolkata.

Wow, haha! Please tell the street name. I had my own wonderful phone experience where an Indian-sounding person called up saying he was from Microsoft and needed access to my windows computer so he could fix an unspecified 'issue'. I told him I had a Mac.

If I'm not mistaken, you can't have the guy arrested unless you actually gave him money. I tried reporting an especially egregious scammer once and was told that since no money had changed hands, there was no actionable offense.

Instagram has a time and purpose, it is mostly for you to send money to people you know or even business to business. But it doesn't track who picks it up beyond a person with the correct info came by and picked it up. They don't know how to contact the person that made a pickup, or even if it was the correct person (like if it was for a person named Mike that lives in California, but instead a person named Mike from Colorado picked it up).
The intent is to send money to people as a gift or to someone that needs a bit of help, but without the high fee that you have when you wire money from a bank.
It is abused by scammers because it doesn't have any link to them, except at most, the face.
