Wow, Erin, what a good approach to comparing watercolor papers -- thorough, easy to follow, very helpful and interesting to boot! Liked, subscribed & notification. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment Jessie! I’m so glad you liked it and thank you for subscribing; I hope you enjoy my channel😊😊
I'm using the Academy grade Cold press, 7x10 inch block. It's a gem. I bought it because it was an inexpensive try at a true rag paper. I like it a lot. I want to try it in a larger size next.
I love the 7x10 too! I usually buy the larger block and trim the sheets down but when I’m using a lot of water, I go to the 7x10👍😊
It’s great paper!!
It really is nice. I was sent a sheet of the academy hot press when I was doing a huge paper testing project for a painting group.. and it was one of my top rated papers. Just a pleasure to work with. It has characteristics similar to Arches which I prefer. Those that love a harder sizing or major lifting ability won't care for it. I have no idea why it's not given more love here in the US.
Yes, it is gaining popularity and sells out pretty quickly in Canada when it is in stock. I love it and tend to use it more than my Arches stash 👍😊
Hot press is great for Urban Sketching where you aren’t drowning the paper with washes & don’t want to mess up your pen tips. It’s also the best for inking & other art mediums that work best on smooth surfaces.
I do have a small block of their hot press but really haven’t played around with it much. I should revisit it! I don’t do urban sketching but I do love line and wash and hope to start doing some more detailed botanicals soon👍
I do have a pretty good idea why it's not given more love in the US, lol.
I’m in Canada and we have a distributor right near me so it does well up here😉
Thank you for this demonstration. I can't wait to try out the Baohong Academy paper! 😉
You’re very welcome! 😊 I think you will really like this paper!!
This is the best demonstration I've seen !! 👏thank you
Thanks so much Mary! I’m so glad you found it helpful 😊
Great review, Erin! I feel very comfortable now ordering this paper, even the student grade🙂
Oh you will be happy you have it!!😊👍
Thank you for this review. I bought a Baohong Trial pack and it costs $10 for an assortment of 5x7 20 sheets Artist and Academy grade paper (rough, cold & hot press grain). So far I am happy with the results from the Academy rough cold press using wet and wet with watercolor and gouache. The paper did not buckle at all even though I did not taped it at all. I haven’t tried the Artist grade yet but I think that the Academy grade is very good.
You’re very welcome! 😊 I’m pretty happy with this paper. I have only tried the cold pressed and hot pressed Academy so far
Please let me know about your experience with the artist grade compared to the student grade, I'd love to know.
I bought a similar trial pack. I was flummoxed when I got it in the mail though because all the print is in Chinese (I assume) and none of the papers are labelled lol. I have no idea which is which. How did you identify the artist from the student?
@@waymire01 I’ve never tried it so I don’t know🙁
@@waymire01I’m late to the post and you likely have the info by now. But anyway, I just bought this pack last week. The way I figured out which was which is that the student grades had 3 sheets of each and the professional, 2 sheets. Of course if they get mixed up I’m not sure how I might tell! I haven’t tried them all, but as others have said I think the cold press student grade is pretty nice for my uses.
This has been very helpful, thank you! I am looking forward to my delivery of Baohong Academy. It's really good to see this comparison and know that I've chosen a reasonable affordable option.
Oh you’re welcome Penny😊I’m glad you found it helpful and I think you will enjoy using it👍
Thank you Erin. Being a beginner I had no idea how to seperate the pages and definately damaged at least one doing it the wrong way. Dissapointed that Baohong couldn't be bothered printing a simple instruction to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. Thanks for saving my $ Erin.
Hi Sharne, I had a Canson block years ago in college and had know idea until I just took up watercolour a few years ago. I ruined a few sheets trying to remove them with a blade😳
Very useful! Thanks for this review, I will try the Baohong paper now.
Thank you Jorge😊
I think you will like it!
Thanks so much for your in-depth review Erin. 👏 My Baohong Academy pads have arrived today.Great to see the similarities in both papers.
Just subscribed 😊
Ps Saved this vid for ongoing future reference.
Hi Sharon, I’m really glad that you found it helpful and thank you so much for subscribing!!! 😊 I think you will enjoy using the Bauhong paper👍
Wow! This was really interesting and helpful. I’ve been using Baohong for quite long now and I often use Arches (French guys who makes it, therefore the pronunciation) as well. I like Arches very much, it’s my favourite. BUT…. Now, I’m really in love with Baohong, I’ve been using it for more or less a half year. Nice to see a comparison.
I’m glad you found it helpful 😊
I do love Arches and have been using Fabriano Artistico bright white as well. That and Baohong are my preference when I’m not painting a background because they are definitely whiter than Arches👍🏻😊
I live in Brazil and the watercolor papers here are soooooo expensive. I had the opportunity to buy the Baohong for 66 reais. 100% cottom. Versus Montval, that was 56 reais, 100% celulose. I would have 12 A3 sheets of the Montval and 20 of almost A4 of the Baohong. For 10 bucks more, I had no second thoughts and bought the Baohong! What a difference!!!! I'm nowhere near a professional, so I have no intentions of using Arches now. I'm absolutely in love with Baohong!!! All the things I wanted to do with the celulose papers and was always frustrated, now I can do with Baohong...
Excellent review. Thank you so much!
Oh my pleasure! I’m so glad you liked it😊
Thank for your post. Staining colors are more difficult to lift depending on the cotton fabric
I’m glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching!! I believe the sizing can affect lifting as well😊
What a great fair comparison! I made my decision and just ordered 2 blocks😜
I’m glad you found the video helpful Robert😊 I think you will be happy with the paper👍
Im using the pro right now and it's to die for.well worth the price
Then I will definitely try it!👍
Great comparison! Thank you!
You’re very welcome; I’m glad you found it helpful 🙂
Thanks for a very detailed review on these two pads. I have been using Baohong, both academy and artist grade cold press. for a long time and Arches, as well. (Haven’t tried hot press.) I think … Baohong is a good paper comparable to arches. It’s not the best, but price wise, it’s good enough. Some professional artists use that, too. That’s how I found out about it. Baohong is not too cheap though, as the price keeps going up. But rather than buying other brand of watercolor pads that’s not 100% cotton, I would highly recommend this. I just hope price don’t go up as much as Arches.
Oh, I’m glad you liked the video! Yes, the price isn’t dirt cheap but compared to other blocks it’s amazing. It is also bigger than most pads and has more sheets so the price is more than worth it I think. And I sure hope the price doesn’t go up either!! I haven’t tried the professional paper yet because it is kind of pricey.
@@ErinEnoArt Cost per sq inch is better than almost any other rag paper. At least so far. I'm sure demand will force higher prices, as it's a quality product
@@dsimms561 Sadly, I think you’re right
And it’s starting to become pretty popular
Wow! I had that Baohong it works really good considering it's the student grade version. I haven't tried Arches yet since it's very expensive for me. I wanna try Arches and Baohong artist grade too, but because of this review I'm so happy with what I have now. Thank you😊
I’m so glad your happy with it! I love it and use it all the time😊 I do like Arches but I love the whiteness of the Baohong
Thank you this video was so helpful!
You’re very welcome😊 I’m glad you found it helpful👍
Thank you for this great video. I bought some of this paper for my teen. I'm glad there is a more affordable options for students.
I’m so glad you found it helpful😊 It is quite nice paper and I use it all the time!
@@ErinEnoArt It's so nice to get reviews from talented and practiced artists like you. I bought the sample set and we are going to compare all of the types of the academic and professional options. It's going to be fun and my kid is super excited to get started.
I’m sure she will love painting! I haven’t tried the professional paper yet. I am sure it is quite good but for the money, the academy is very close to Arches!
Thank you! I’ve been viewing all the posted reviews on this paper. I usually paint on Arches and Fabriano Artistico but, was looking for a better student grade for my 11 year old granddaughter who has been showing great interest in painting. Wanting to encourage her as much as possible I have been intrigued by the fact that this student grade is 100% cotton!
I’m glad my tutorial helped😊
It is very nice paper and will save your granddaughter the frustration of using cellulose paper! I usually by the largest size because it’s the most economical but I always takes a few sheets off the block and trim them down. The added bonus is that both sides of this paper are usable!
@@ErinEnoArt I have received the 2 blocks of the Baohong watercolor paper thatI had purchased for my granddaughter and some smaller sample sheets for myself from Amazon! As soon as I reorganize my studio I will try these sample sheets. Thank you once again.
@@jaquelinedeponce5251 oh that’s great!! I am sure you will like the paper!!😊
Nice comparisons. Student grade compared to top end Artist grade … Baohong did very very well for its category.
Thank you😊 And yes, this is a great paper for those looking for a more affordable option. It definitely performs well! I have another low cost paper being sent to me soon so it will be interesting to see how it compares.
My 5x7 Academy B 100% cotton block is a dud, your harsh lines are similar to what I got using it, as well as the lifting with green hues. I think my block is not sized. Thanks for sharing your findings! 😃👍🏾🙏🏾
Don’t give up on it😊 I’m really happy with their paper. I do use Arches as well and I get the uneven harsh edges when I do leaves on that as well. I find my greens need a good even amount of water on both papers. I hope you keep at it and get some decent work out of your block😊🙏🏼
Muito obrigada, me ajudou demais!
Oh , I’m so glad! 😊
Fantastic comparison. 👍🏻👍🏻 New subscriber 👋
Thank you Julie, I’m so glad you liked it😊
And thank you so much for subscribing; I hope you enjoy my channel!!
I tried the pro.im very impressed
Thanks, I will have to try it someday!
Nice test, practical as well. Did not see obvious defects on Baohong
Thank you 😊 I’m glad you found it helpful. It’s quite nice paper!!
Baohong has two different kinds (one the academy) and a more “artist grade one” but find lifting very difficult on this paper & feel the academy kind when doing wet on wet (looks ok but not like Arches).
Yes, I’ve never tried the Baohong artist grade because it’s just as expensive as Arches🙁$$$
Here I wanted to compare a good 100% alternative. I’m really happy with the Academy but lifting is not as easy as with Arches. You can see that well in the lifting I did on the staining swatch.
I actually prefer the Academy for some pieces because it’s a brighter white though. They all have the strengths and weaknesses I guess😁
Ty it was very very helpful.😊
You are so welcome!!
Thanks Erin! I just had my finger on the order button at Amazon for the Baohong….but didn’t order! I will now, though! God’s blessings!
I think you will really like it! I have 2 more pads shipping to me on Wednesday! 😊😊
Seems to me you wouldn’t want the staining color to lift as much hence the reason for it being staining?
Hi Joy,
Well, paints aren’t typically chosen or made for how much they stain or don’t stain but rather for their colour. Some pigments are just staining by nature and some papers stain more than others. Some artists do a lot of laying down and lifting of paint until they get the look they want so it’s good to know how a paper handles that. 😊
Great
I’m glad you like it👍
Baohong is even cheaper in rolls. Best of all, they sell 10” and 15” rolls meaning it is easier to store. Their watercolor journals are also decent (I hate the fake leather though)
I wanted to try the journal but they’re pretty pricey for me. Canadian dollar🙁
I’ve been looking into how to do that myself too!😊
Thank you for correct pronunciation on Arches! It’s not an arch, it’s paper and it’s French so…….. oui oui🤣❤️🔥
Oui oui indeed!😂😂
Hello, could you please let me know, which one of the two renders colours brighter?
Hi, in my test I didn’t notice much, if any difference. You can see it best in the 2 swatches I do in the video.
I switch between these 2 papers a lot and don’t notice a difference in paintings either. I hope that helps 😊
@@ErinEnoArt Thanks for replying. Yes, it did help a lot. The reason for asking is, on the screen it could appear different than in reality. Am just a beginner at water colour painting, and it's going to be very difficult to buy Arches paper due to its price. Was looking out for a cheaper alternative, and you have shown me the right one. 🙂! Thanks a million.
@@specialeffectsgraphicsdesi9066 You’re very welcome! I think you will be very happy with the Baohong Academy paper. I buy the largest block and trim the sheets down to smaller sizes. I also use both sides because there is very little difference between the front and back👍👍
@@ErinEnoArt Thanks, Erin. Here, in India, Imperial size sheets are also available. They turn out to be much cheaper than large pads. I think, I’ll go with the sheets.
@@specialeffectsgraphicsdesi9066 oh that’s great! There is one place I found here that has sheets but it’s not cheaper than the block
How did tape come off the paper?
Do you mean did it tear? I use painters tape and have never had a problem 😊
Another way to help when taking off your tape is to heat it with your hair dryer & softens up the sticky & so far no tearing!
Is your arches artist quality...if so you are comparing axhedemy to professional..baohong also makes an artist line..is rougher than arches soft press ( snd baohong academy) but i haven't tested it throughly so i cant tell you how paint flows but it does make it harder to do pen and wash.
Artist from baohong is has a green cover sheet.
Arches doesn’t have a student grade so yes, this is student vs professional. I wanted to present an affordable option for beginners and wanted to show how this compares the Arches👍🙁
I didn’t choose the Bauhong professional because it is just as expensive, sometimes more, than Arches😳
Why didn't you compare Artist grade paper with Arches? Isn't this Student grade?
Hi Robinette,
Yes, it is their student line and I do make sure to mention that in my video.
The point of the comparison was to show a good, less expensive alternative to an artist grade paper. I did mention the cost difference in the video and that the Baohong artist grade is just as expensive, or more than Arches because it is a block. The Academy performs very well and is a great option for those who want to upgrade to a cotton paper but are concerned about cost and waste 👍
I want a cute little tool
Oh, I have a lot of them. I think they changed them recently because I saw someone on UA-cam showing a white tool that they got with their pad.☹️
Baohong is significantly cheaper from Temu.
Thanks for the tip😊 I checked it out but it’s basically the same price that I pay through Amazon- $36
You have to be careful on Amazon because if the Meeden store is out of stock they direct you to other stores which are WAY more expensive 👍
im so sorry to arches but i will not pronounce their name correctly...bc it very literally and exactly is how we germans say and pronounce our word for "ass". it feels very disrespectful 😅
very interesting video though, ive always wondered....
Oh that’s hilarious!
I don’t even want to pronounce it that way now😂
Please review how it is made (forced labor) vs. Arches made by artisans with a long history. I will pay more for Arches every day.
Unfortunately some can not afford Arches and this is a good alternative. I looked into Bee paper but it’s just not readily available for most.
What is Bee paper? Loved the video, btw.
@@michellehorton9212 It’s another brand of cotton paper. Not as good as Bauhong but decent and affordable. Just hard to find although the sketchbooks are becoming more available
definitely get the sentiment but not entirely true.
I think I prefer "Artches" over "Arsh". "Arsh" sounds like "Arsch", which means "ass" in german.
Arsh paper = Arschpapier = toilet paper
Very expensive premium toilet paper, lol.
😂
Me too and even more so now that you told me that!!😳
Buying products from China have no credibility in their manufacturing process for the labor and/or the ingredients. I try to buy elsewhere even when I have to pay more.
Generally I feel the same regarding inferior products, however, Baohong paper is widely used by amateurs and professionals alike. That being said, this was done to present an option of an affordable paper for the newer artist looking for a good cotton paper that won’t break the bank so they can practice more freely 👍
Sorry you didn't want to spend a few dollars more to do an apple-to-apple comparison - but make a 25 minute video comparing??? Would have been more useful?
Hi, the point of this paper comparison was to explore the behaviour of a less expensive paper in relation to what is considered a high end paper as a lot of my viewers are beginners and have not yet invested in a premium cotton paper. To compare Bauhong’s artist grade paper, which is as, or even more, expensive than Arches would defeat the purpose. I have yet to try it myself as I find the academy grade to be a very nice option.
