    I'm now 73 yrs. old. I used to watch this show when I was maybe three or four. Both my grandmothers died before I was born. I had no idea what having a grandmother would be like. Somehow, when Molly would talk to "me" from her window, this little Catholic girl, felt as if a grandmother would be like her. A few years ago, on a retro cable channel, "The Goldbergs" showed up. As I passed the television screen, my heart smiled and my husband was shocked to hear me say, "Aw, look...it's my grandmother!" A person sometimes never knows what kind of comfort they give, without even knowing and just being themselves. God bless you, Molly Goldberg.

    The show was written by Gertrude (over 5000 scripts): debut was on radio in 1929 & it took some work to convince Ms Goldberg to take the show to TV.

    I can just imagine non-Jews living in the middle of the country watching this show. For many it would have been their first exposure to Jewish life, and how important it was (and honestly still is) to show Jewish life as a perfectly normal thing that deserves respect.

    Oy...such memories ! Yoo hoo !! Lucky me...a childhood in such a neighborhood. . I miss my childhood. My neighbor used to laugh when I would do the "Yoo Hoo" out my window to the alley between our houses. When I grew up and was starting out on my own...my dear neighbor Mrs.Liebowitz gave me some kitchen utensils...I still have the wire cheese slicer. I went to my piano teachers sons Bar Mitzva. We joined the Jewish Community Center. I can remember some Yiddish...just from being a part of such a sweet neighborhood. I attended Sabbath dinners. I am so lucky. My father had been a goyum as a young boy. I grew up believing Jewish people were very special. Anti semitism just does not make any sense.

    The Goldbergs lost its charm when - during the final season - they moved to Long Island. The same thing happened to "I Love Lucy'' when the Ricardos moved to Connecticut.

    This is my favorite Goldbergs episode. I wonder if the Yom Kippur service was filmed in a real synagogue.

    Dies anybody notice that Molly always wants to be heard and her 2 cents. Ive noticed that Molly gets upset that nothing goes her way, She wont let anyone have a chance to make up their minds. When Jake knows the right way of doing things Molly gets upset.

    If this was a modern tv show, maybe, hopefully, Judaism/Jewishness would be normalized in the US and there wouldn't be so much antisemitism.

    But where is Philip Loeb???

    • @TheBlackhawkbrat
      @TheBlackhawkbrat 8 місяців тому

      He was blacklisted. Gertrude Berg tried to get him back but the accusation that he was a communist stuck and she had to find another actor to play Jake Goldberg. Loeb ended up killing himself in 1955 (aside from being blacklisted, he had a mentally ill son). All in all, a tragic story. Berg believed Loeb to be the perfect Jake Goldberg, and I agree.

    It was a very different time in this country when this ethnic show was on.
    Has there ever been another TV show with such an obvious Jewish cast?
