Why do I need the second stake? Once I put in a stake at the top of the hill then another at the bottom and tie my string, can’t I just mark a level line on each stake where the string is attached to find the angle’s degrees? I don’t understand what the purpose of the second stake is and I really don’t understand why moving the second stake closer or farther from the main stake makes any difference in anything. What am I missing that my brain doesn’t understand?

I forgot to mention that both the top and bottom stake would be leveled straight before attaching string.

If you don't need extra stakes, then don't use them. Some jobs will require more or less than others.
