It's important to understand that life is about quality, not quantity. After amputation, 100% of the pain from his bone cancer was eliminated over night. Chances are cancer will metastasize to another limb or an organ like his lungs. Sam is happy and gets lots of attention which keeps him wagging his tail and wiggling his entire body. Samwise swims, hikes, and eats like a 100% healthy dog. He is truly happy. He is now 1 year post surgery with no complications. GO SAM!!! We LOVE you SO much!!
Waiting for my Dog to return from surgery today with my wife and begin his life as a Tripod. This video combined with the best song about dogs ever helped, thanks!!!
My greyhound's amputation was much different. She had a 7 day hospital stay because of blood loss, spiking fevers and other complications. We are two months out and she is finally walking without help of a sling. I stayed home an entire month with her - the meds had her crazy - she had panic attacks at night and wouldn't eat during the day for 4 weeks. I questioned my decision many times during that period, but am happy now that she seems much happier. It's not a cakewalk for sure.
I too have a amputee dog, a black pug named Ollie. After 4 surgery's to repair a badly broken leg,he had the limb taken off. He's made a remarkable recovery. He runs, jumps, and does everything he used to do. I wish I never put him through all the pins and screws they tried at first to fix him.The anesthesia for each try to fix the leg is dangerous to the dog, not to mention expensive to the owner. I'm at about 10K all together for vet bills. I'd spend every cent I have to keep my dog healthy.
I had to pause in the middle because I couldn’t stop crying, lol, but thank you so much for posting this. My dog has surgery tomorrow and this def helped
I can tell this video is old due to the wire sutures but I’m very glad to know that the idea of making osteosarcomas as pain free as possible has always been there
This video helped me so much - our gorgeous puppy had to have a front leg amputation yesterday....I watched this last night and I cried buckets...I'm so happy I got to see this video ❤️❤️❤️ you have an insanely beautiful and strong dog xxx
It's the pets that lose something that always seem the most remarkable to me. If a human loses a limb or an eye, they're sometimes incredibly mean about it and it changes them. For a dog or a cat, when they lose it life goes on. My grandma's first shih tzu lost one of her eyes in a fight trying to protect her puppies. Ironically, four years later her son also lost one of his to infection. They're two of the sweetest and cutest dogs in the world. Go Sam, go!!!!
Thank you for this video. My Golden Retriever is having her back right leg amputated tomorrow due to cancer. This gives me hope that things will be okay.
You are a life saver. How wonderful to see this. I've anguised over a failed skin graft on my lab Maggies front leg for over 4 months. Her quality of life has suffered from confinement, wound care and lack of exercise. Seeing your video has given me the strength to make a decision that will give Maggie her happy life again! I'm calling my vet next week so she will be ready to swim this spring. Without it she would not!! We both thank you!!!!!
Great video! Pets are family! Our cottontail bunny, BunBun, has had 2 surguries this year to remove a tumor that keeps returning. She's almost 8 yers old and it's too risky to remove again. We just love her like crazy and make every day great for her!
Thank you so much for posting this.. As I write this, my golden mix is undergoing amputation for her front leg due to cancer. It was good to see what the incision will look like and what the first two weeks are like..
Please visit www.tripawds.com for good info on canine limb amputations. They believe as well as I do that dogs are born with 3 legs and a spare! Dogs do not grieve like humans over a missing limb. If the front is amputated, dogs hold 70% of their weight on the front 2 legs, so they run slow, but jump 100%. The opposite if a back limb is removed, they can run full speed, but have difficulty jumping up onto your vehicle
My beagle kira is about to have front leg amputated about July (2 mths) due to cancer in her paw. This video makes me feel ok also cos kira is an 11 yr old n though I don't know how old your dog was when this happened I know he wasn't a pup. I hope kira adapts well like your dog has. ♡♡
No dry eyes here. Nice video, never heard the song either, so it was really quite moving. Had to amputate my youngun's front one at 6 wks, but he adjusted ok. he can run and outmaneauver the other ones pretty well. Peace :)
I need to amputate my dog's leg, I was really concerned about her not being happy afterwards. Is recovery too hard for them? Do they have a lot of pain? she already had surgery on her elbows but one didn't work, I couldn't stand seeing her suffering line that again 😢. Thank you for this video.
@N0Sc0p3V1d30s I am truly sorry to hear that. My Shadow is schedule to have her leg amputated this week for the same reason. This video really helps to accept the amputation.
its not all sunshine and rainbows. my dog just got his back right leg removed and it's been crazy stressful. Day 4 his incision site swelled up started bleeding I thought he was going to die. He was in a lot of pain. Also don't do FHO surgeries on older dogs, my dogs femur broke during it and never healed that's why he had the limb removed.
I know this video is from years ago. What about the first couple days??? My pooch won't take his meds cause he won't eat and he probably needs to pee soon.
There's a possibility that my dog jaxx is going to lose one of his back legs and I'm so scared. I've been crying all day. He had pins put in but they don't know if it's fixed the break. I'm so scared idk what to do.
Is the dog missing a front or back leg? If it's a front leg, and since dogs carry 60percent of their weight on the front, it can be hard for them to run fast. If it's a back leg they can run fast but will have trouble jumping up into your vehicle. I'm no expert. I relied on a website called tripawds.com there are forums of owner's of dogs with 3 legs. They taught me so many valuable lessons. Remember life is about quality not quantity and dog's are born with 3 legs and a spare. My samwise lived 6 happy years after his leg amputation. He was so popular with 3 legs.... I think he loved it.
sbcake28 he’s missing his left back leg. And thank you for the tip! Now I can make sure to get a ramp to help him get into my vehicle since we have a Jeep and it’s pretty tall.
@@gigi-mn4ey that's a great idea! Also it's important to keep a healthy diet with a dog that has 3 legs, extra weight gain can make it difficult for them. For example the other leg's will bare that extra weight making those legs bow out. Keep healthy and happy:)
@@sbcake28 just got it done 11/11 she wouldn't eat to take her pills. We had to get something to start her appetite up again. Yesterday she threw up dinner and today she didn't want to eat breakfast so I gave her the appetite stuff. She ate with in a hour and kept it down.

Samwise lived 6 years after leg amputation, .001% survival rate without any chemotherapy. I researched asap and amputated for $1500 inclusive of all meds, surgery, after visits. He survived cancer because of his amputation

Not at all. He ate the same as always. Why do you ask? Is your dog not eating after amputation?
