Gabriel, I just tried this by attaching a chain to piece of metal conduit that a a brick that slides on through the brick hole. Totally worked. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you so much for making this video. All of the videos I have been seeing on UA-cam everybody does the passenger side and that side is the easiest side so I appreciate you doing the hard side which is the driver side. I was trying to get the shaft out for 2 days and then I came across your video good looking out brother You saved my butt on this one.
You the Man , Gabriel! Nobody has ever mentioned about centering the lock ring, I've seen so many guys just try to jam the cv axle in an hit it hard, its probably never properly seated. Such a simple trick, I love it! Only a real blue color guy like you can think of such a simple and elegant solution!
Gabriel, Gracias Brother. I pulled both axles out of the boots with my hands but the inside cups stayed stuck in the engine. Yesterday I tried a crow bar, tried hitting it with a screw driver and hammer , tried vise grips but nothing worked. I quit after about 40 minutes of trying. Came home and look in youtube and came across this video. No one uses a chain it seemed but it worked for you and I tried it. Bought a 3 foot chain and 2 bolts with nuts and washers a Lowe’s today. Borrowed a slide hammer form advance auto. I wrapped the chain around it and finger tighten the nut onto the bolt and attached the other side to the slide hammer. 2 pulls and this thing came flying off. AMAZING!!! Took me less than 10 minutes to get both of them out. I laughed so hard that something so simple could have worked so well. I now have a little case to store my “cv axles puller chain”. This dang thing is a life saving tool. Lol. Thank you so much man.
Yes, if 1, or 2 pry bars don't work, I use the slide hammer. They have so many different uses, and they're not expensive at all. I recommend buying or making one, so you have one. You could make a heavy duty one using weight lifting equipment, and it would be nice to be able to change the weight on it. Home Depot sells threaded black steel pipe, with various types of threaded adapters, and endcaps.
I have used the chain twice once on an 18 year old, 111, 000 miles ... soaked with wd40 and in the third pull it came flying out .... a neighbor was about to call a tow truck to bring it to a service station ... same thing used the Chain ... thank you
Thanks for the tip. I drill a hole in the boot and then attach the chain to the hole. i have a hook on the end of the chain to attach directly to the hole in the boot of the cv joint. Then yank it out. Great video.
Hey, you are a very helpful, knowledgeable mechanic! Thank You! 1st of all, you did well with the title of this video. Many who post videos don't think out a good title straight to the point. That is what caught my eye as I was scrolling through axle removal videos. Calling it "Removing a stuck CV joint using a chain" was good. 2nd, your demonstration of how to hook up the chain and pull out the old CV axle was appropriate. I heard of guys using a chain to remove axle shafts before, but could not figure how they did it. The one item that I did not have was the slide hammer. So, after wrapping the chain around the inner part of the axle shaft and putting in the bolt/nut, I took the other end and wrapped it around the heaviest sledge hammer I had, I think it is 15 lb. Then I took the sledge, pointed the handle of the sledge away from the axle, and gave it a couple good tugs. About the 4th pull, the snap ring on the axle let go and the axle popped out. This idea of using a chain is a good one for me, and for others. Most everyone got some kind of chains laying around to use. Also, you were showing how to remove the axle from a Mazda. I own Pontiac Grand Prix's, front drive of course. The access to the inner part of the drive axle shafts next to the differential is easy to get to. Using a large pry bar is difficult because it is hard to swing the handle of the pry bar. I do not have a lift to raise car high enough for clearance. Also, one can buy axle removal tools, but the problem still remains of getting the end of the tool onto the inner end of the axle shaft. On the Grand Prix, that end of the axle shaft is quite bulky, and the power steering lines and transmission wiring harness wires are very close. In the past, I already damaged and had to fix those lines. Not fun at all to work in that area. Well, thanks for the good tips.
Thank you. This video help me today to pull out a broken CV axle. The axle came out but left the CV cup on the transmission side in. I wrapped the chain around it and then use the slide hammer on it. After 4 or 5 wag the cup jumped out of the tranny. What a relief! Thanks again for your video.
Wow! The most efficient and less costly method to get a stuck CV axle in transmission out without causing damage. Unfortunately, I had damaged my seal before I found this trick. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for putting this video together! I have a 2012 rav4 and axle was giving me the blues. I did this and it came right out. Saved me a ton of money.
Thank you for your excellent Video - it is very well explained without any unnecessary content ! It explains the situation and the solution very well in a way that most People will understand 🙂 Unfortunately it does not work for me as my driveshaft goes straight into the side of the gearbox - there is nothing to hold on to and nothing to pull the shaft out! I will continue searching but I did enjoy your video and I did learn some valuable new techniques! Kind regards, William.
Great idea with the chain and the puller. Never tried that idea but certainly will the next time. I've always used the grease on the cir clip too to hold it in place. Works every time. Thanks again for the video and the idea.
I had 2008 GX470 that wouldn’t come out. Pry bar, 4’ long didn’t work. Chain and huge puller was a no go too. Finally put it in neutral and rolled the axle 90 degrees, it popped out with a screw driver. Excellent video Sir, thank you.
I recently did some work for a friend of mine, a Army veteran who is battling cancer, and is on dialysis. He was broadsided by a young driver who was trying to beat the light through the intersection and he hit my buddy's 2010 Scion tc hard enough to push us from the center lane to the bus lane on the side of the 3 lane county road we were traveled on. The impact was centered on the left front tire and most of the damage was in the suspension on that side stopping right at the sub-frame. I tried to remove the cup end of the cv joint from the transmission for days with no results. I then decided to drill a hole in the "cup" and attach the hook from a nice stout come along and I then buried my big harbor freight pry bar a couple feet into the ground a couple feet with my mini sledge. I then hooked my come along and started ratcheting until I was as tight as I could. Then I put a flat pry bar on the other side and it came right out
The chain is a very good idea if you can't get it out any other way. When I'm installing the inner cup, I put the gap of the clip at the 12:00 O Clock position on the Grove in the shaft, and push the shaft into the transmission with a firm push and it pops right in. Next time I'll try the grease and see if there's a difference. SAFETY FIRST, JACK STANDS ALWAYS.
Always use a torque wrench for the axle nut , and the lug nuts. the other nuts you can get by without it but its still better to torque them too. I understand, when you do this work a lot,you get a feel for fastener tightness. But lug nuts and axle nuts should be torqued. Rock on!
Can you please answer a question for me 1, is the clip at the end of the axel sopse to be sticking out from one-sided or flushed on both side ? 2 can i use grease used to grease up my grease joints also to grease up my axel female fitting?
Driver's side 2002 Ford Focus couldn't pull it out so bought a length of chain and got it wrapped at the back of the axle at the trans case and a bolt and nut holding it tight and wrapped the other end with another bolt to my van cross member and got it out with a gentle pull reversing the van. Made sure I had room to accomadate the van, big parking lot. I didn't have a slide hammer. Then of course, the replacement axle wouldn;t fit through the wheel hub when test fitting before shoving into the trans.Waiting for replacement to come, should be here soon. Will DEFINATELY use your grease and clip alignment technique when it finally gets here. That should save me from a leaking trans, and since I bought synthetic Motorcraft manual trans lube which costs an arm for one bottle and a lg for two bottles.I don;t want to leak any of THAT stuff!! Zetec and MTX75. Oldie but goodie.
It happes to me on a ford escort, I couldn't take both c v shafts off. On that case I have to remove the transmission off and break it. We have to find another tranny case to transfer the parts. I know The shafts most of the time are easy to remove, but that escort was a pain. Please let me know what happens. Thank you for watching.
So, use a chain and slide-hammer so all the force is transmitted to the CV. Beats using a ratchet strap which will always have some stretch and wasted effort!!
Ratchet strap is much thinner and is able to get behind that lip(where the pry bar goes) ratchet and pops right out. Passenger axle took me 6hours by myself with no past experience Did the driver side axle in 45minutes after I learned to tie a strap and ratchet

Awesome video work and thank Father God for the patience you have 😄 Glory to Jesus Christ
thank you Gabriel very much. My 1994 BA Astina automatic has very little room for pry bar, so now I will try this method. Hope is a precious thing.
Thank You Gabby! Pry bar has no leverage to pry against. The chain trick worked beautifully!

I've been doing it that way for 35 years. Nice to see people who think outside the box. Subscribed.

Hola saludos amigo y gracias por el video yo tengo este problema de como quitar el cvjoin.hoy ya vi su video gracias
Thanks for your advice, i did replace the hammer by passing pliers threw one chain link and did hammer the pliers, it did pop out really quickly.

Nice to watch a pro at work ... not some cut & shut cowboy!
GREAT JOB BROTHER
Thank u.
Hi Gabriel, can you tell me what type of grease you used to hold the snap ring in place? Thanks for this video.
Used small chain n wrapped other end around 10lb sledge worked on 4th tugg👍
thanks

Thank you for watching.
That's where I'm at with the passenger side Honda
Will this work for a 03 dodge ram 1500 4x4 front axle
What type of grease did u use
Or can any grease be applied there

That is an ecellent trick
I have a 99 Lexus es300 and the CV is stuck. I used the slide hammer with no chain just the collar and it won't budge
I Have a 2005 PT Cruiser drivers side cv joint stuck, must be the circle clip. I will try the chain with a slide hammer
What would you do if that does not work?
It happes to me on a ford escort, I couldn't take both c v shafts off.
On that case I have to remove the transmission off and break it.
We have to find another tranny case to transfer the parts.
I know The shafts most of the time are easy to remove, but that escort was a pain.
Please let me know what happens.
Thank you for watching.
