  • Long overhang milling can be a vibration-prone application. The lightweight CoroMill® 390 cutter, in combination with Silent Tools™ adaptors, is developed to overcome this challenge. When designing lightweight CoroMill® 390, material has been tactically removed to create the optimal cutter design for minimizing mass. This makes it more compact and significantly lighter than a conventional cutter. This film demonstration shows the effect in increased productivity.

    Impressive! But why not use a high feed mill when roughing is needed in an appilaction like this?

      Hi,
      When using high feed milling cutters most of the cutting forces are directed in an axiel direction, towards the spindle and the effect of having a lighter tool will not be the same. This tool is to be used when 90Deg is required due to component design or fixturing.

    Is the idea behind the lightened cutter that, with less weight at the end of an extended gage length tool, less vibration will be induced by its rotating mass?

    • @sandvikcoromant
      @sandvikcoromant  5 років тому +4

      Hi,
      Yes, there are two things to consider when it comes to machining with long overhang (extended tool gauge length). One is the weight of the tool and the other one is the length from the damping unit in the Silent Tools adaptor to the cutting edge.
      This is the reason why we have optimized the weight as well as the length of the lightweight CoroMill 390.

      @@sandvikcoromant Was it impossible to make the tailor made tool shorter? Did it become only possible with the additive manufacturing?

    Kind of ironic, isn't it?

      @@molitovv -Regarding Guilherme Fracasso's observation. Was my assumption that irony was a reference to an additive process being used to create a tool that is used in a subtractive process. Maybe humor is not quite the way to put it :)

    Is there any other benefit In addition to the depth of cut?

      @sandvikcoromant  5 років тому

      Hi,
      Apart from the increased depth of cut and improved metal removal rate you also improve process security.
