"Paint the best wall mural you've ever painted..." This was my brief from Andrew and Sue at Santa Fe Restaurant in Subiaco, Perth. After 8 days of painting and pushing myself to the max, I managed to produce the best mural I’ve painted to date… but not without some hiccups along the way which you can hear more about in this vlog! • Dealing with fear and ...
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist who had a famously tragic life - from having Polio as a child, to being impaled by a tram in an accident when she was 18, which led to multiple spinal operations. She is one of my favourite artists and when Sue and Andrew asked me to paint the inside of iconic Santa Fe restaurant, I jumped at the chance to paint a tribute to Frida and her relationship with her on-and-off-again husband, Diego Rivera whom she affectionately called her “toad-frog”.
Apart from being a famous muralist, Diego was a well known womaniser and their relationship was famously tumultuous; a thrilling story of adultery, bisexuality and general disfunction. They divorced in 1939 and then remarried again the next year.
The structure of the mural is loosely based on one of my favourite paintings of hers, Las Dos Fridas (The Two Fridas) which shows two “Fridas” sitting side by side, with exposed hearts linked together with blood vessels. She painted it shortly after her divorce from Diego in 1939 and it records her emotions surrounding the crisis.
In Santa Fe, Frida is in the main room, with her beloved, ‘toad-frog’, Diego, in the next room. Though they aren’t looking directly at each other, they’re linked by their hearts which are each looking for the other. It’s both a tribute to their own relationship, but also more generally, a comment about the bonds of love and relationships.
Big thank you to:
Andrew and Sue from Santa Fe Perth, Olivia for her awesome filming and painting, Mitch and Matt for being my most excellent minions and photographers!
My name is Fieldey, I’m a surf, skate and street artist from Australia. I started this channel 5 years ago when I was an unhappy corporate designer yearning to become an artist. Since posting my very first video I’ve been on a crazy journey from teaching myself to paint surfboards and skateboards, to painting large-scale street art murals!
Turning my passion into a full-time career has been a massive learning curve and I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned, as well as inspire others who’re just starting out on their creative journeys.
I post on Saturday every fortnight, sometimes more, and you can expect to see easy to follow, Mad Skillz Masterclass tutorials, Artist Insider vlogs and inspirational projects that I’ve been working on.

You are my favorite person In the history of mankind!!!!!
Yay, looking forward to the next video. Its an easier way for you to answer those questions from people like me, instead of doing it in the comments.
This mural is awesome, but we all knew it would be lol
+slippinggnome Lol! Thank you! No worries, always happy to answer comments... it sounds like there's a lot of people out there who want to know this info!
I know I'm late to the Frida party but the Mural is beautiful!
An amazing piece of work about an amazing woman. Strong in so many ways & way ahead of her time.
I am watching your channel for quite a while and I became a fan of yours instantly. But when I saw this video, since I am interested in Frida's work and her lifestory, it fulfilled me with the need to paint more than ever. To paint more and again and again and again and again.... Great mural. Rly ;) Thanks for sharing.... Best wishes from Czech rep
I like your art style and your tutorials are so easy to follow and your teaching is so uncomplicated thanks for sharing.
Absolutely STUNNING! I love it
YOU ARE THE GREATEST EVER
Wow amazing work Fieldey and great likeness as well as use of colors brought that place to life!!
This is a great mural. Have you done, or considered doing, a video/series about your design process, specifically? Do you draw it on paper, first? How detailed are your sketch ups? How do you conduct your research? I think seeing the background work for a mural, surfboard, or skateboard project would be extremely interesting to your fans! I can't wait to see your next project.
You're living the dream! I hope to be as good as you when I'm older
Thanks Clover Mint! You will be as long as you keep painting/drawing and practicing - that's all it takes!

Awww thank you! Welcome aboard!
As always freaking awesome :)
Thank you for existing !! You inpired me so much, I definitly am gonna try to paint murals without using spraypaint. Also do you draw your outlines with a pencil by looking at the reference or do you use some kind of other technique?
Awww thank you! You can totally use spray paint if you like it - I use it now for base painting and it's the best! For this one I used a projector for the initial sketch, but other times I use chalk or pencil and a reference photo.
I'm gonna show my friends your channel do that they can subscribe
+chronicstamped Why thank you! That would be rad!
this is simply amazing! I want to paint an map on my sons wall do I just use acrylic paint?
Yep - best bet is to use house paint though. :)
Where is your piece located? I'd love a picture with it!
Thank you! It's at Santa Fe Restaurant, on Hay St in Subiaco in Perth.
yea, how do you price. do you do it by sq ft?
its amazing. but not monobrow???
hi i really want to paint a mural. my medium is acrylic paint and ive never painted off a canvas. ireally really want to but im afraid... what do u think about mural paint? like the brand? and i want to paint something smaller scale just to start off. any tips?
Check out this video I did: ua-cam.com/video/kAsG7qyK9NU/v-deo.html but I'd recommend using acrylic house paint - any good quality brand will do :) My top tip is to make sure that the main drawing up is as close as possible to how you want it - then you can focus on the painting
Hello. May I ask what kind of paint you use?
I'm using a mix of house paint and Viponds signwriting paints.
The eyebrows do not look same as Frida's eyebrows... lol Good work!!!
Hahaha yeah, it's actually from a photo of young Frida - before her eyebrows were more... Frida-ish.
Did you make graffiti or street art? So, if the "-ish" means kind of, your style is graffiti-ish!!! (i apologize for my poor English)
What type of projector do you use?
Sorry for the late reply - a very crappy old one :) Now I don't use a projector hardly at all.
i want to ask what paint are you use?
I'm using a mix of house paint and sign-writing paint, if you want to see them more in detail check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/kAsG7qyK9NU/v-deo.html
Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials thank u so much
How do you price your work?
+Tiny Houses I have a day rate that I charge and on top of that a concept fee and materials.
+Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials I've always wondered how one would price a mural like this. Fantastic job, thanks for replying and sharing your talent!
+Tiny Houses No worries at all! It took me a while to work out how to charge for stuff like this... day rate was just easier all round ;) Thanks for watching!
Why some artists feel the urge to depilate Frida Kahlo it's a mistery to me. Her eyebrows (and moustache), so proudly flaunt for all her life, are integral part of what she was and what she was trying to communicate through her art and her own persona.
There is really no reason to beautify her, imho she wouldn't be happy about it.
I agree that Frida wouldn't like people "beautifying" her, but if you look at the young Frida reference material I painted this from, she doesn't have much of a brow or mo yet: www.fridakahlo.org/ so it's true to the original reference.
another kool blockbuster,all the best
+Arthur King Lol! Thanks man!
Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials Heya, was keen to obtain one of those choice board decals, but cant seem to find them on the site,am i just old and dumb/blind?
+Arthur King Nooo! You're totally none of those things... I took the site down as the hosting fees were costing me an arm and a leg, I have all the files tho so if you want to drop me an email: hello(at)fieldey.com or PM me, I'll sort you out with one.
Can you do a tutorial on how to get good color blends the way you do? My brush strokes are all over the place :-(. Please make a video for us about that
Thanks for the comment - I'll add that to the list, but basically I work quickly while the paint is still wet and use water to blend.
OOhhhh thanx. I'll try that today!!
