- Tony and the Team help charismatic Hektor Rous, the son of 'Aussie Earl' Keith Rous, piece together the mysterious history of the family's Tudor country home in Suffolk.
Hektor Rous moved from Melbourne to Suffolk in 2004 to try to rebuild his family estate's fortunes, and established premier events such as the Latitude festival in its 3500-acre grounds.
The estate has belonged to the Rous family since the 1500s and now handsome Hektor is desperate to find out all he can about his illustrious ancestors and the houses they once occupied.
In 1773 a drunken butler supposedly set fire to Henham Hall's wine cellar, sending the whole place up in flames. Can the Team piece together the family home's history, and find out if the butler did it?
There's nothing visible where the house used to stand, and there's almost nothing left of the huge Georgian mansion that replaced it.
Geophysics shows up the clear outline of a Tudor house, but can the Team work out what it looked like; whether it was one of the finest houses in the land, as some claimed; and the truth about its demise?
After nearly three days of uncovering piles of fancy decorations and Tudor bricks, the archaeologists and Hektor discover a huge surprise. Could there have been three mansions on the site?
The answer to all their questions may lie in the infamous cellar. But can they can find it... ?

*This was the 1st Episode of "Time Team" I ever watched, 4 years ago.* I've so enjoyed these fun episodes, the Characters, and I've come to feel like I know Phil, Stuart, Helen, Tony, John, (and miss Mick) Rakshar, and ... our Boy Matt (the most agreeable Team Player that takes all the teasing "forced fun events", with such a great sense of humor, even the ones when he had a bit of a "hangover"! )
I appreciate the value of these and wish each and every one of the Team a most positive everything and Best Wellbeing...

Love this show. But I have to give credit to a team that doesn't get any love. The people in the excavators, they are wizards with those machines.

@@TDFMonster40K This episode is from one of the two last seasons when budget was cut, the team had started disintegrating and the bigwigs at Channel 4 was pushing hard to simplify and "popularize" the series. The two Ians who did the machine excatation work through most of the series certainly got their fair share of the credit. This was such a great show. Such a shame that it got cancelled. We never got it in the States, with the exception of the short lived "Time Team America".

Thank you for uploading these. TT always gave me a lot of pleasure, but I live in Botswana and we stopped having it on our TV after series 14. I've searched for DVDs in vain, so it's wonderful that you've made TT accessible.
This one is definitely 1 of my to 5 favs! Really like the current family owner - well balanced between mind and position.

Isn't this about your opinion of this episode that ended, what, 7 or 8 years ago? Not your "frustrations" that you experience seeing a qualified doctor., Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb ,who has been awarded a full Professorship of History at the University of Roehampton. She's a brilliant woman. I thank her for that. Appreciate her brilliance and hope all our children learn their history of their country as this show allows.
Doesn't mean other team members in all 20 seasons are less educated/experienced than she is. The thing is, her character and appearance was too posh and too-good-to-be-true for the show. She wasn't compatible to others to the extent that she became an eyesore. Statistics reveal Time Team was cancelled because majority of the viewers didn't like changes of format that was made in the last season. And one of those changes is, as we all know, including the introduction of her character.
@@licualaramsayi5311 I respect and enjoyed her presentations much more than Mary-Ann Ochota, whom viewers did not respond to well. I wasn't fortunate to view these programs when they were made. I've caught up these last 10 months, rewatching the entire series many times. My favs are Mick , Phil, Tony, Raksha, Dr. Alice(who has her own shows), Katie, Bridg, Matt, John, Stewart, Tracy, Jenn, Ian, Robin, etc. Get my point? They're all great, the artist, the woman osteoarchaeologist(Margaret?)with the short dark hair , computer people, Kerry the Mr. Go-for, Paul the pot dude, Guy, the Romanist, guest archaeologists, the equipment operators & etc. Every person made their mark and the show wasn't complete without them. Many, I see their faces but can't remember all the names. But, alas not everyone responds to everyone else. It's like being the new person in the office and every one is mad at management, so they take it out on the new employee. Cheers..stay safe.
I suppose season 19, when Mary-Ann joined the show, marked the beginning of the downfall. Later that season Mick Aston left, and the show lost one of its prominent figures. As an ordinary/non-archaeo viewer that wasn't familiar with history of the UK at all, to me TT was an interesting presentation where matters in archaeology/anthropology/history however complicated, always been explained briefly with simple audio-visual by plausible-and-down-to-earth people. Those people blended one another naturally like one big family and became part of the show's attractions. In later seasons however, I felt big portion of those warm human sides were gone. I personally prefer Helen Geake, Carenza Lewis and Raksha Dave much more over Suzie and Mary-Ann. :)
@@licualaramsayi5311 they made you feel like family time in your own tv room watching home videos. I watch 95% educational tv as I mirror my ph to my tv. Loved everyone you mentioned,but look what happened to them? Carenza a full professorship, Raksha starting her own business, Dig Ventures, and Helen in education and media as well. There's no way that this show could be replaced.

Yes I've gotten to love TT and the characters, following how each of them developed since early episodes. I suppose TT is one of great long-run docu series ever made by British networks, too bad that it finally had to end. Thank you for your hint on Phil's Axe Man (yes I like him too!), I will check on it for sure and add to my docu collection. Very nice chatting with you.. As an erstwhile falconer, the object shown at 32:22 is the top part of a bell that birds of prey have attached to their legs to assist being found if lost, or on the ground on a kill. Mention was made earlier by the historian, at 27:29, about a reference made in a document, to a hawk perch being in the entrance. By doing so she joins falconry and hawking as synonymous when, in fact, they are not. Such a reference could have been made to allow a person to enter the building but leave the bird just inside. There is early written reference concerning the birds that could be used and by whom. (See The Boke of St Albans, published in 1486, written by Dame Juliana Barnes, the Prioress of Sopwell nunnery. A member of the landed gentry would never use a hawk only falcons, and then usually it would be a peregrine. There was a pecking order in place.

sybil laholm Hello Sybil. Many thanks for your comment. Falconry is a subject that used to have boundaries but thing have changed dramatically over the past 10-15 years in many countries. Too long to go into here. If you can get onto the Boke of St Albans, beware as while she gave a list of who could use which birds, there are flaws in it. As one example, she mentions the vulture can be used. However, such a bird was never used and though some falconry centres do fly them they are not flown in the traditional manner. I had a friend in Newent, Gloucestershire, Philip Glasier, now deceased, who was the foremost authority of falconry in England. His daughter, Jemima (sp) bought his FALCONRY CENTRE from him when he retired and he moved to Scotland. She changed the name of the establishment but there are many other locations around the country. She, however, probably maintains the best establishment in the country. Maybe they still runs courses on basic falconry. Incidentally, when I was involved with falconry in Canada, where I reside part of the year, I was one of the very few people who made my own "falconry furniture," i.e hoods, gloves, jesses, etc. and people from many countries used to buy from me, all being made to order.
Wotdermatter Very interesting. I'll try to get onto the Boke of St. Albans but I don't think I will ever do much except read about hawking since Iive in a small apartment in a Chicago apartment building with no vast greens around for such a pleasure. Anyway, thanks for all the info.
I don't think Dr. Lipscomb equated the two types of bird work. I never heard her say "falconry" but only "hawking". ( BTW, The hawk perch reference shown on camera said it was in the "hall" which in a Tudor dwelling would have been a great hall, not an entryway.) It would have been nice if they had identified the bell, though! In a much earlier episode TT featured working with birds of prey and their furnishings were detailed, and I think I recall that it was made clear that different types of birds were reserved for different status individuals. So the TT staff had that info once but didn't bother to share again.

I just love this show for the humour and the beer. Back to the old Time Team, Team. I think series 19 was a presenter experiment that went wrong. The difference is very apparent.

Man, I don't know about the rest of this season, but this is a shell of what the prime seasons of TT were. In its prime, TT would have 30-40 people working on a site, multiple tents, catering, and people like Helen, Robin, Mick (RIP) et al were so much more interesting. I can see what Mick was talking about when he said he left because of "faffing about". So little archaeology, so much faffing...
I know this is silly, but when I see bells from that period, I always think lepers.

After endless hours of watching "Time Team", I must say that I am utterly disappointed! Not once have I seen Tony Robinson approached any member of the team and offered up a "cunning plan"!

Does others come to your sites and look for more or do you just fill in the wholes after and move on
The archaeologists all have other jobs with universities and archaeological programs around the United Kingdom. They come together about once every couple of months to film one of these episodes, then they go back to their real jobs. These are not full archaeological explorations, these are tests digs, they see if there is anything worth further study. Sometimes the holes are left open for local archaeologist to come and proceed with the exploration other times they fill the pits in and just mark them for future reference.
Before they started the producer asked Mick Aston, what is possible? He said "Three Days".

Actually Francis is right. By the Tudor period moats were pretty much for ornamentation, a kind of status symbol and not for defence/ protection.
Moats in Suffolk were generally used to mantain high moisture levels ander the clay foundations of large houses and not primarily constructed for protection. If the clay subsoil is allowed to dry then it will cause subsidence in the main foundations of the building as was seen in large tracts of East Anglia during the hot summer of 1976. Most of the houses affected had had their moats removed a few years before and turned into sunken garden features at the very beginning of the "Yuppie" revolution. They paid very dearly for their exotic shrubs, carved benches, and the
cruel act of making thousands of ducks homeless.

Mick quit TT after the idiots changed the dynamics of the show. Most of the staff was fired & format changes had him walk out. If you notice in a few of this season's shows you can see the stress wearing him down. Not sure if he died during season 20 or what, but soon after. I think he was only 63. Tony produced a loving "In Memory" show to him a year or two later in '05 or '06. It talks how he & Mick met in Greece(?) when Tony took a trip & Mick was on a dig there or Tony's trip was an archaeology dig. I think it can be found just by Googling . I watched it years ago & may have gotten where I heard Tony talk of the trip but it's a great show...stay safe

Charles Brandon was married to 2 wives when he was asked to escort Henry VIIIs sister to France. Between then and go again to fetch her home, he was trying to get his 1st marriage annulled. Ive yet to read he succeeded in this, which means when he married Henry VIII´s sister he was comitting his 2nd BIGAMI. 1st wife not annulled nor divirced when he married wife nr. 2. Not anulled nor divorced of both marriage nr. 1 and nr. 2 when he marries wife nr. 3. Henry VIII was neither single nor dirvoced when he married Lady Anne Boleyn nor Jane Seymour. He too was a bigamist. Maybe bigami was the norm in Catholic and protestant England in Tudor times. Could be why Queen Elizabeth never married. I know regard Henry VIII historic files will can say ahm no he was divorced. To that I say BS. What Henry VIII wanted he got. Until Queen Catherine of Aragon died was Henry VIII a bigamist and a sinner. The divorce to Queen Anne Boleyn was trumped up farce, empty promises. It is written that Anne said when told of Henry VIII wants regard her future. " So he still wants me dead. I did not need to purge myself." By this was Anne having been forced to sign annullment, divorce papers, on false grounds, by selling her soul. It was NOT enough for Henry VIII, Charles Brandon and Cromwell that Anne agreed to divorce, no she had to agree that all she went through bc Henry VIII wanted, the great matter, the battle to be married, all her life from when he chose her, claiming "ive been stricken with the dart of love, so i dare not declare" bs, never ever happened. That she a lady aristocrat was no more than a travern whore and her daughter Elizabeth a bastard child, not the kings child even. Henry, Cromwell, Brandon plus all wanted her dead. She signed a lie and in her heart and mind she had purged herself, sold her soul. Charles Brandon was just as bad as Henry VIII. I pray all men mentioned burns in hell.
