I had the honor of working with the legendary P-3 for a short time. I gained a lot of respect for those guys. It's a remarkable aircraft. Japan's P-1 just improves on what was already a great platform and makes it even better.
I'm weird in that I actually like the sounds of military aircraft when I stay at Navy Lodges and the like. My stay at JAX was cool because apart from the Goshawks, Texan IIs and the occasional Hornet I was used to at KNPA, I was treated to the variety of the S-3s and P/E-3s that approached directly over our MWR cabin.
I thought the P3 was replaced by the P8 a while back.
They did the same with the F-16. The 'Mitsubishi F-2 "Viper Zero" is all around an improvement on an already great fighter platform.

An aggressive rotation on takeoff with a plane with a long tail boom like this would risk causing a lot of tail strikes. They would need to keep it fairly level for both takeoff and landing.

Yup. That's the way it goes. My grand dad fought the Germans at The Somme. My dad was chased out of Singapore by the Japanese. During my military career, I worked closely with both and was proud to do so.
Love Japan, I raced 5 Kawasakis 2 KX80s and 3 KX100s my last kX100 was raced by myself in National competitions (UK), also raced on a Suzuki RM80 and a RM125. I also worked with Japanese Koi Carp and presently own a Japanese Akita.
One of the attractive features of the P-1 are the big windows for the flight crew.

I'm certainly glad about two things. First I'm glad we are allies with the Japanese. Second I'm glad that they have taken it upon themselves to start creating what they want instead of just getting equipment from us, they are a very innovative country. I believe the entire world can benefit from that.
So, So very True. When I buy my products, I try and make sure they were designed and manufactured in Japan, especially my automobiles. Proof is in the pudding. Datsun/Nissian and Toyota/Lexus, nothing else.

@@scotabot7826The Japanese are getting stuff made in Chinese factory’s . Firms like Honda ,Suzuki ,Yamaha & Kawasaki . There is more than a good chance ,that any vehicle you drive or ride ,will contain some components ,maybe an engine ,or even wholly built in a Chinese factory in China . Every modern aircraft that flies ,will have at least one or two parts manufactured with Chinese sourced components .

I do too. It can continue its mission with one engine out. I wonder what the procedure is if a P-8 has an engine failure? I know first hand that a P-3 would continue a patrol with an engine failure.
@@Chris_at_Home with a long runway and a light load, a 737-800 can take off with one engine. Flying is no problem.
Japan also operates a ShinMaywa US-2 Flying Boat in the Anti-Submarine, Anti-shipping, Maritime Patrol, and Air Sea Rescue roles.
I'm not surprised Kawasaki built this plane. Japan is surrounded by ocean and the fact they are next to Russia and very close to China ocean-wise, and as such they need extensive ASW capability, especially in the Sea of Japan.
I'm betting that, for the first time in a long time, we in the US end up importing the P-1.

The Japanese have always had strong aviation technology capability creativity.
Having decided to embrace its own independent flight courses is welcomed. It provides additional technical resources that will be shared with its allies as well as its commercial applications.

I saw one of these at RIAT a few years ago, and was seriously impressed. They were marketing it to the R A F, but we went with the Boeing P8. I think one of the major reasons must have been commonality, as several European and NATO air forces also took on the P8 around the same time, and being based on the proven and popular 737 airframe, Thais was understandable . I still think the Kawasaki looks good, though!

@@scotabot7826 Worry not. The P8 is NOT an airliner. About the only thing it shares with the 737 is the basic airframe and not the avionics used in the Max. Besides... there's nothing wrong with the design of the -800 variant of the 737 and it doesn't use the engine layout and type used by the Max, thus no MCAS on the P8 to begin with.
There was nothing inherently wrong with Max's MCAS system either IF it was used correctly. It was being misused because the pilots that misused it Could... the 1st gen MCAS used on the Max had no default system to prevent misuse and the MCAS's augmented flight controls designed to make the Max handle like the earlier 737 variants could "argue" with the pilot's control inputs if used for take-off with high AOA which the MCAS would attempt to "correct" if used during takeoff by pitching the Max down. This is what happened with the two 737 Max airliners that crashed shortly after takeoff. Thus, Boeing had to reprogram the MCAS software to make it foolproof, seeing as how fools can be so ingenious...
Moot point with the P8 since it doesn't use the Max's airframe or its MCAS to begin with.

The UK had the option to buy some of these for our Maritime operations, Sadly, they went for the US Boeing P8 Poseidon system instead despite the Kawasaki outperforming it in every test. I believe the main reasons centred around cost and the existing relationship with the US. There may have been some interoperability factors as well though.
Well, the UK had their Nimrod which was best, but they trashed that too.
The Boeing P-8 has significant commonality (63%) with aircraft already in RAF service (RC-135W)
@@TheBoobanThe RAF was stuck with the Nimrod, it was never an aircraft they wanted but there was no British aircraft to replace it.
@@WilhelmKarsten Nimrod Mra4 was a new aircraft made by the UK to replace its existing Nimrods. They had just finished developing it but then chose to buy P-8’s. By all accounts it was a better plane.

"Military enthusiasm" all you want. Nations need to want something for it to be produced at scale.
Meh it's not always fair competition, in fact it never is.
The US in particular and I say this as an American veteran has no issue pressuring allied nations to adopt our tech even if it's the inferior solution for them.
You have to remember America makes it's stuff first and foremost for itself.
When it makes armored vehicles it takes note of the fact it will have to be transported across an ocean before it can fight and that it will be thousands of miles from a repair depot possibly.
This is why the heaviest and best tank is probably the Israeli merkava not the American Abrams because the merkava doesn't have to worry about train tunnel dimensions and rail car transport limits.
It doesn't have to worry about going far to get looked at or getting bogged down in wet mud.
Likewise the Abrams is a worse tank for India which is worried about fighting way up high in the mountains and needs a highly maneuverable tank able to keep it's engine going in an oxygen starved environment.
A powerful light tank from say South Korea or Japanese/Taiwan offering are better choices.
But that doesn't mean the US wouldn't pressure them to accept American weapons regardless or that those countries wouldn't give in to that pressure as part of a larger diplomatic strategy.
If India thinks buying the Abrams comes with access to f35 as well or a free trade deal or any other number of items they might decide to pick the worse tank.
So desire isn't all that matters

Aviation seems like a perfect for Japan. I’m surprised they haven’t built a larger industry. Honda, Mitsubishi, etc all seem to struggle getting a foothold. Hopefully this is the start of that.
It takes BILLIONS and a large amt of govt. help. Boeing gets huge USAF contracts and Airbus gets NATO contracts. Japan's military is too small to sustain subsidizing aircraft development, although Japan does make their own version of the F-15.

What a weird article. I just assumed the P1 existed because japan wanted to fund their own homegrown aircraft industry. I thought the P3 Orion was replaced by the P8 Poseidon in the US about 15 years ago.
4 turbofans! As far battle operational reliability loitering standards goes makes more sense to me than the P8’s ETOPS. I’d say a superior mission platform. They thought this out thoroughly.

Opportunity to call the PX the P-10 was utterly squandered.
While the P1 is a beautiful looking and good MPA, its sad that no one else acquired any and that mostly every other nation that was seeking a new MPA went with the P8. Yet, they fit what Japan needs so all good.

The P-1 and C-2 are good looking aircraft
P-1and P-8 are both excellent maritime patrol aircraft. They have slightly different strengths but both are capable of completing the same mission tasks. P-1 is better suited to low level searches while P-8 is better suited to high level searches. Ideally you would want some of both types to complement each other or partner with other countries that use the other type.

The RAF already adopted the Boeing 700 series when they bought the RC-135W... the P8 Poseidon shares 63% commonality with the 707/135

I agree that purchasing the Boeing was the most economical and practical thing to do at the time. (Just hope there’s no bolts and rivets rattling about inside. Sorry.)
I still think the RAF missed out in buying the US Poseidon P8 instead of this, defence relationships at play no doubt. This is a superb plane. I'd love to see them in the UK.

Boeing P-8 Customers. The United States Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force, the UK's Royal Air Force, Norway's Royal Norwegian Air Force, and New Zealand's Royal New Zealand Air Force currently fly the P-8A Poseidon variant; the Indian Navy flies the P-8I variant.

Having 4 engines causing more disruption with sensors for detection from what UK trial found out thus UK went with more expensive P8. P1 also made an error with claim that S Korean destroyers used targeting radar on them when they were using detection radar to rescue N Korean fisherman.

In consideration of safety , stability , easy manouvering , handeling of an airplane , as well for best view all around , attagement optionds underneed the wings and or on flussalage of the plane , having the wings attached on top of the flugelage instead underneed , and the engine place on to of those wings instead of underneed , would be the most favorable and best option .
Now could this plane possibly have any commercial (I.e. passenger or cargo) applications, or are 4 engines for such a small aircraft considered to 'fuelish' for any other use?

Those engines really have a low bypass ratio. Video stated they're putting out 61kN of thrust and called them "Powerful" with a high bypass ratio. Bro, the 737 Max's LEAP engines put out 100-120kN of thrust.
Yes, but having four versus two and a lower bypass ratio helps in acoustics masking. Besides, Boeing now has another issue with the Max. Its latest LEAP engines have a problem with the anti-ice system. The composite materials being used in the engine cowls can deform from overheating which can lead to catastrophic failure of the fan blades.

I would love to see Japan enter the market for advanced aircraft. The time has never been better, with Boeing returning to basic training school on how to operate a business.
Perhaps Japan could make a passenger version of their new aircraft. The take up the slack Boeing has created with the Max.

Mitsubishi getting into aircraft in a big way, especially with their Bombardier buyout, may lead to them producing bigger airliners (sorry Boeing and Airbus). Better Japan than Russia or China. Is India next?
Upon seeing the P-1 Nautilus at RIAT a few few years ago, this is the sub hunter the RAF should have bought, not the P-8, a Glorified Ex Ryanair Boeing 737 Holiday Jet. A clever cross breed of an Airbus A320 with a Boeing C-135R compact with good performance enabling the Nautilus to use any airport suitable for a Boeing 757. In order to extend its patrol endurance can the Nautilus fly on two engines ,like the old DH Hawker Nimrod ?.
P1 for Japan, new P8s for US, India and Australia. Maybe later South Korea and Singapore,
Japan. US and Australia could donate surplus P3Cs to Taiwan, Korea, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and (more controversially) Vietnam?
Better to donate free of charge and be used by allies than sit in storage.
For the US an opportunity to sell missiles, torpedoes and spare parts.
And to have more formal defence ties with ASEAN countries.
The P-3s are at the end of their useful lives. Any low-time aircraft has already been saved and put back into service.

The P-1 is an impressive aircraft. While it can extend its range beyond 8,000 Km by shutting down 2 of its engines, its is in no way more capable than the P-8 Poseidon. The P-1 is also more expensive than the P-8 Poseidon.
While the P-1 will serve Japan well, it will not, in all likelihood, see service beyond Japanese forces. It will also not see the type of ongoing advances and capabilities that the P-8 Poseidon will. Nor will it see the type of crew training.
How old is this? The RAF opted for the P-8
