Motörhead’s hit single “Ace of Spades” was released on October 27, 1980, and has gone on to be considered the definitive Mötorhead anthem. The single spent 13 weeks on the UK Singles Charts, where it peaked at #15.
The song opens with an overdriven bass intro played by Lemmy. For the lyrics, he said he “used gambling metaphors, mostly cards and dice-when it comes to that sort of thing, I’m more into the one-arm bandits actually, but you can’t really sing about spinning fruit, and the wheels coming down.”
To promote their new single, Motörhead appeared on BBC TV Show Top of the Pops, on October 6 and 20. With this single, Motörhead has broken into the mainstream, and it was this single and the following album that launched their commercial success. “Ace of Spades” has gone on to be considered amongst the most influential in the development of thrash metal - despite the band resenting being labelled anything other than “rock n roll”.
This single was the title track from Mötorhead’s fourth studio album “Ace of Spades”, which was released on November 8, 1980. It is the band’s most commercially successful album, and it peaked at #4 on the UK Albums Chart. It was also the band’s debut release in the United States. The album was recorded in August and September of 1980 with Vic Maile at Jackson’s Studios in Rickmansworth.
Vic Maile had worked with many major artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and the Who. He initially crossed paths with Lemmy when he was a member of Hawkwind. Maile was critical in giving Motörhead a sleeker sound on record, without sacrificing its raw power.
In honor of the 40 anniversary of the “Ace of Spades” single, we have Cameron Webb here with us, and the multitracks for the song, and we are going to breakdown the making of this incredible song. Cameron worked with Motörhead on 6 of their albums and has heard many stories from the band about the process behind this song, which he will share with us!

Lemmy was awesome. I saw the band about a dozen times, and met him once (briefly)
It was either late 96 or early 97, definitely the"Sacrifice" tour. They were playing a small venue in the club district of Dallas. (about 250 - 300 people)
When the day came the forecast called for snow, we got to Dallas around 7, found a place to park and went to the club. The doors were SUPPOSED to open at 7:30, but we were turned away due to sound problems, and told to come back at 8.
At 8:00 we were told 8:30, and it progressed at half hour intervals until 10:30. At that point fans weren't walking around anymore, they were lined up even though the winds were really picking up and it was freezing.
We were let in shortly after 10:30, the first band was local, I don't recall their name. Didn't get to see much of them either, they only got to play 3 or 4 songs and the club told them that they were done.
Next was "Belladonna" (singer from "Anthrax" solo effort) they got to play about 5 or 6 songs.
Motorhead took the stage just before midnight and played until a bit after 1:30. Then Lemmy announced " We're going to take a short break and then we're going to come back and thank you for waiting in the fucking cold"
They took a (working) 20 minute break, during which time they met fans and signed merchandise.
They retook the stage right about 2:00, and played until 3:30 (clubs were open till 4am in Dallas at the time, probably still are)
Pretty much 2 shows for the price of 1, that's one hell of a "thank you" considering they didn't have to do anything, and probably had another gig the next night.
PS - The sound was AWESOME, almost studio quality although the cymbals were a bit loud in the mix.
      Sincerely,
      MHB # 1204

That's great! The first 'famous' band I ever saw live (they already had 'No sleep 'til Hammersmith', but at that time they still played in halls for just 2000 people). I was 14 years old. I remember Phil being so drunk, he literally couldn't walk. Two roadies had to hold him to prevent him from falling after Motörhead finished their last song of the regular set. We didn't expect an encore, but after 10 long minutes the roadies carried Phil Taylor, who still wasn't able to walk, and then put him on his drum stool and he started to play 'Overkill' with his crazy fast double bass drums, tight as hell! I'll never understand how a man can't walk, but still play the drums like that.

My first ever gig I went to which was at the Manchester Apollo in Nov 1980 having just started university. What a completely mind-blowing, loud as hell experience! I was about two thirds of the way back from the stage and still had trouble hearing lectures for a couple of days afterwards. There were headbangers giving it some in the base-bins of the speakers at the front of the stage! God help their hearing! I know there were people who left Motorhead gigs with bleeding ears - in hindsight I’d imagine all these people now with maturity and the benefit of hindsight see that as a regrettable experience! At least I had some experience of those awesome times but can still continue to hear and appreciate their music to this day.

I have an old (1978) original Mesa Boogie Mark I that was an ex studio sell off item. After I bought the amp, the guy told me it was used to record the 'Ace of Spades' album.

Speaking of Lemmy's roots and love of 50's Rock & Roll, check out The Head Cat. It was Lemmy on bass and vocals joined by the greats Danny B. Harvey & Slim Jim Phantom. They did a bunch of Buddy Holly songs along with stuff by Jimmy Reed, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, & Chuck Berry among others. I think the trio even wrote an original song on the 2nd album. Really cool to hear Lemmy in a different context singing his hero's songs

Some of us waited outside after the gig and we got to go in and say hello in twos! His assistant was a bit short with a couple of the fans and he bit her head off, haha! I miss him a lot! Used to catch Motorhead AT LEAST once a year and Rock 'n' Roll will never be the same again but luckily the music will always, always live on and Motorhead will never truly die! Cheers for this video! This was an especially awesome one!

Hi Warren,my band Novocaine toured with Motorhead in 98.To say that it was an education is an understatement.Phil Campbell a fellow Welshman was on guitar with Micky D on drums,of course Lemmy on bass.I remember the one night I asked lemmy what he thought of us after noticing that they watched us play most nights,he said "Well shit really, but of all the shit that we have had playing with us over the years probably the best one" I took that as a compliment and was glad to actually see him outside of the dressing room playing on his patchinko machine as he did when he had spare time.I was very sad as we all were to hear about his death,i had a bottle of jack daniels and sat down all night remembering and listening to them.So many questions I didn't ask and so many i did.I will never forget when this record came out and would never have thought that i would end up touring with them but life and music brought me something truly amazing.

Awesome video. I got too see Motorhead in early-mid 2000. The only other band on the bill was Morbid Angel. Strangely enough the two bands had done many shows and tours together.
Being a young teenage metal head and a huge fan of Morbid Angel that show was a big treat for me. I had seen Morbid a couple times already and it was my first time seeing Motorhead.
And yes. Motorhead IS THE LOUDEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!! Such a great concert that was.
Thank you again for this treat you gave us. And thanks to Cameron for sharing his experience with the legends of Motorhead.

I was 14 when Ace Of Spades was released and I went nuts! It was faster and heavier than Priest and Sabbath, crossed lines between late-era punk and metal. Was already a fan of Hawkwind, so... Thanks for sharing the sound bites. Fantastic!

For everyone who remembers this from The Young Ones, that show was able to be produced, at least initially, because there was no budget slot available for a sit-com, so the producers got it classified as a variety show, which also provided a larger budget. That's why they had musical guests (on one episode a lion tamer) like Ken Bishop’s Nice Twelve (which included members of Squeeze & The Police), Dexys Midnight Runners, The Damned, and Madness.

Never forget my first Motorhead show here in Vancouver Canada. They were on the Blizzard of Ozz tour so I had the pleasure of seeing the classic MH lineup along with Randy Rhoads with Ozz. I remember Motorhead being so loud that I could hardly hear my mates talking to me between bands and when Ozzy came on they sounded muffled 🤣🤣
