Looks nice but I think using HDF or thin plywood would be more durable than cartboard.
Give it a try. Cardboard gives the base a bit of cushion. Never hurts to experiment!
Your chip carving will last a lifetime. Maybe more. Why put in something that will rot and rot the fabric with it like cardboard? Use some archival!
