Rudy was a bad person (with a difficult past) who becomes (or is becoming) a good person. So that's why it is a good show. Many of the characters are flawed or deep in other ways. We literally see Rudy become a functional, contributing, and morally right member of society (he still wild for the beginning of the show ofc). I also wouldn't classify it as a shonen specifically for how rough the content can be.

About what Sunraku wesrs in Shangri-La Frontier, he wears basically nothing because of a curse thing that prevents armor from being equipped to his torso and legs and the reason he wears a mask is because he is embarrassed at not be able to wesr proper clothes
