You can do everything by hand, you just need needle and treath (dont know how to write that haha). It just takes longer but you can still do it 💪🏻 All the stuff she uses makes it easier, but you dont need them
Use freezer paper for stencils. You draw your design, cut it out and then iron the paper down( sticky side on the right side of the fabric or else it will stick to your iron) then use fabric paint. When you peel off the paper it should have a crisper line than regular non stick stencils 😎
One of the things i like about your videos is that you include close-ups of you actually sewing on the machine ... it really helps to understand what you are doing.
This is very pretty! For stecilling on textiles it's always a good idea to use temporarily adhesive glue spray (or glue on stencils), it usually makes the result much cleaner.
I've said this before but I do NOT sew and have no plans to learn (I still haven't quite figured out why I enjoy watching you sew so much, lol). That being said, I am always AMAZED and entertained by your videos. This one turned out fabulous and so very similar to the dress from the movie. I hope you win the contest!
Gorgeous as usual! For stenciling, I'd use a stencil brush, which has a compact head that is usually round in shape and tap (not rub/drag) the paint on so it doesn't smudge.
stencil before it's sewn together and use a stencil brush - it really helps! I do lots of tshirts. trace the pattern on to freezer paper, cut it out and iron on to fabric. That's the best way.
No way! I was inspired by your transformations and transformed my own Rapunzel costume for my spring break trip to Disneyland last year! So cool to see your take on it. :)
When I need to paint on a stencil, I usually use freezer paper. You just draw or trace your design onto the matte side of the paper, cut it out with an x-acto, and then iron it into place on your garment with the shiny, waxed side down. The iron will melt the wax enough that it will adhere to the fabric so you get a nice clean edge when you stipple the paint on with a foam brush, but it peels off easily without leaving any residue. I use this method for making custom t-shirts all the time.
I usually use a contrasting color contact paper, you can print a mirror image of what you want on the back and cut it out... no leakage at all, super easy to use, quite cheap and leaves no residue on the fabric
For stencils, use self-adhesive book cover. Draw the design onto it, then cut out with a knife, remove the back and attach the book cover onto the fabric. This way it doesn't move around and you get a crisp line on your design. :)
Sew Scoundrel I was thinking maybe make a stamp with either a rubber stamp kit (where you heat and mold the stamp material and can reuse it), or even make a potato stamp- carve the design into a potato and use it as a stamp.
I love your channel! I have been sewing since I was little and my mom made clothes out of all kinds of stuff. There were some things such as the sleeves that could have been done easier for you if you had sewn the hem on the sleeve, attached the lace, attached that part to the upper sleeve and then sown up the side in one seem, then attached it to the strap before attaching it all to the bodice. It makes the seems neater, and saves time and frustration.
April, this is such a fantastic idea and execution! The only bummer about any of it is (not your fault at all) that I am slow with uptake when it comes to sewing and I wish I understood better. Tangled is in my favorite animated movies list, so you get extra points for that!
I made a rapunzel costume a few years ago too! my dress was ok (not as lovely as yours!) but the piece de resistance was the wig, over 40 total hours of work went into it. It's just over 5 feet long, and about 6-8 inches in diameter. flowers braided all through it. the works. It's a little bit tangled (lol) now, but that first year it was seriously remarkable. everyone kept wanting to touch it :P
Wow! This came out great! Btw, I thought that it was so lovely of you to tell everyone to join the competition that you're going to enter yourself. For that and for your amazing talent, I hope you win☺
I always wondered how it would be to see her use an old clothing item that was once yours... Would you regret donating it, seeing her make something fantastic out of it? 🤔😅
could you make a video about your thrifting process specifically, like how you choose the clothing, what ideas you get when you see the clothing and what you take into account before purchasing the clothes? I think it would be really interesting and I would love to see!
For stencils I take a small paintbrush and use the stencil as a guideline instead of dabbing with a sponge. It gives more control. Or you can also take a white colored pencil, fill in the stencil pattern you want on your fabric and then "free hand" paint on top of that. This method allows you to make slight changes to the stencil pattern as well (if you want certain things bigger, thinner, etc)
For the stencils, you could try using a small amount of paint, ans do it two/ three times, waiting to dry between layers to get definition and fine detail which could be lost if a most delicate stencil material is used.
there's stencil specific brushes that have stiffer bristles. also use less paint so it dries faster and won't smudge. don't lift the stencil so soon as that will cut down on chances of smudging also 😊
i know you have already done a belle transformation dress but you should do one to fit yourself and base it off belles blue dress in the new 2017 beauty and the beast because it's gorgeous! The whole look is just so aesthetic and the way she tucks it up at the side is cute too
The next time you use a stencil try using a smaller sponge and clean the stenciled and wash the sponge after every use, it takes a while but the result are very good and cleaner. I love your videos.
For the stencil: first starch and iron the heck out of your fabric, then use a spray adhesive on your stencil every time you put it down. You don't want it to lift AT ALL. Then, the sponge applicator you used is perfect.
Very well done!! It looks beautiful! I'll use that painting technique for some Disney ears I'm making, thanks for the tips! As far as stenciling goes, I'd just wash and dry the stencil between each application. It's a pain, I know, but the end results are well worth it in my opinion. :)
hi work with paint a lot. I would of cut the stencils out, also you need to wash it off every few times. it was smearing because you zigzagged across the dress, if you went from right to left it would of helped (although you were looking for over all Balance and it would been hard jot crowding them that way.
My suggestion for stenciling- I find that it helps if you use a sticker type stencil, or you can use spray adhesive to the stencil. 'Dry brushing' will prevent the 'bleeding' effect so it's better to build your colour in layers. If you want to look farther into stenciling, I recommend "Stencil 101" by Ed Roth. Hope that helps you. Awesome turnout though! I love your work and am inspired by you! Keep it up!
Could you please do a video showing how you do your seam ripping? Whenever I try to rip seams I always end up with very jagged edges on the fabric, so it's not really usable anyway, and I may as well have just cut out the whole seam with scissors. It's frustrating. A coolirpa tutorial would be so great!
uhm i did some stencilling on a bustle for a dress once and i found to get a nice clean stencil it helps ro wipe down the stencil every few times so it doesnt smudge :)
when it comes to stencils, you want to pick out a soft but durable brush. foam brushes are meant for covering bigger scale area's. another type of brush you should be familiar with is the fabric brush or pen. but get the ones you can fill yourself and pour in your favorite acrylic, or dye you wish to use, ect. then stencil away. also the thicker the paper, the longer lasting the stencil. Don't be afraid to use your stencil on a piece of cardboard, then cut out the design you wish. this way you can select your pattern, use it multiple times, and keep the life of the original stencil longer. I know it's tedious, but worth it.
I don't even have a sewing machine or half the things you use in your videos, but i still love watching them! :D thanks for sharing!
some times hand sewing is better.
You can do everything by hand, you just need needle and treath (dont know how to write that haha). It just takes longer but you can still do it 💪🏻 All the stuff she uses makes it easier, but you dont need them
me too !
Use freezer paper for stencils. You draw your design, cut it out and then iron the paper down( sticky side on the right side of the fabric or else it will stick to your iron) then use fabric paint. When you peel off the paper it should have a crisper line than regular non stick stencils 😎
Thanks!! :D

i love your vision april! i would never be able to look at this stuff and come up with these amazing creations!
Thank you!!
I love how the lace gives the illusion of the bodice being a corset on top of the skirt! that's really cool.
Okay I haven't even finished the video, but I had to comment because you are literally so adorable and this costume is just soooo crafty!!!
you make sewing so interesting. ..thanks
One of the things i like about your videos is that you include close-ups of you actually sewing on the machine ... it really helps to understand what you are doing.
Please do some more costume transformations for Halloween season!!!
This is very pretty! For stecilling on textiles it's always a good idea to use temporarily adhesive glue spray (or glue on stencils), it usually makes the result much cleaner.

I literally have no interest in sewing or thrifting or making clothes, nothing. but i just LOVE your videos! its so satisfying to watch.
I'm so excited!!!! I wanted to be rapunzel for halloween!!!
Just joking! I can't sew... But I love it!!
Your face expression when you are done is priceless! I can really see that you enjoys what you get! Congrats!
Gorgeous as usual!
For stenciling, I'd use a stencil brush, which has a compact head that is usually round in shape and tap (not rub/drag) the paint on so it doesn't smudge.
Your costume turned out really cute.
you could always use a dark purple to touch up where the paint smudged
this is amazing. a game of thrones inspired dress would be lovely for your next project . :) perfect for Halloween.
stencil before it's sewn together and use a stencil brush - it really helps! I do lots of tshirts. trace the pattern on to freezer paper, cut it out and iron on to fabric. That's the best way.

You can also buy re-positional spray adhesive which you can spray on the back of any stencil you want.

I actually like the pink pajama top on its own but omg you did it again! It looks AMAZING😻
I am always so impressed with your interpretations of character's costumes! great job!
PLEASE DO MORE COSTUMES!!!! THAT LOOKS AMAZING
This was so cool, you should make this a mini series for Halloween. Great video as always :)
Ya that would be awesome!
I love your channel!

I have that dress but for my dolls xD
You are so talented ! I feel like going on project runway will be great and I'm sure you have a great chance of winning !
You should totally do Prince Philip and Aurora from Sleeping Beauty! Bonus points if you somehow incorporate the color change XD
Love your videos!
Could you do more Princess 👸🏼 Costumes? Like sleeping beauty
could you make a video about your thrifting process specifically, like how you choose the clothing, what ideas you get when you see the clothing and what you take into account before purchasing the clothes? I think it would be really interesting and I would love to see!
I'm always so amazed by your work! Wish I had your talent.
Love it! It turned out really cute! I like the stenciled detailing.
So amazing! Definitely my favourite transformation episode till now:)

The sleeves looked fine! Great job!
For the stencils, you could try using a small amount of paint, ans do it two/ three times, waiting to dry between layers to get definition and fine detail which could be lost if a most delicate stencil material is used.
I don't know why this reminded me of the gypsy Esmeralda 💜
I see it! The skirt color matches Esmeralda more imo.
I love Esmeralda! She is so underrated though..
April, could you please make a Esmeralda costume someday? 💕😊
I'm getting back into sewing, your videos are major inspiring :)
Super cute, I just made my daughter a Merida dress I love how it turned out too! :)
there's stencil specific brushes that have stiffer bristles. also use less paint so it dries faster and won't smudge. don't lift the stencil so soon as that will cut down on chances of smudging also 😊

Thank you SOO much for posting this!! It really inspires me to make my own and you really inspire me to learn to see and mend my own clothes 💜💜💜
For the stencil: first starch and iron the heck out of your fabric, then use a spray adhesive on your stencil every time you put it down. You don't want it to lift AT ALL. Then, the sponge applicator you used is perfect.
I don't even sew but I love your voice so much I can't stop binging

Oh! Fantastic look!
I am so jealous of your skills! I really want to be like you but all the dress seams and things you need to know intimidate me!

this is absolutely adorable!! you are so talented! :)
