Americans seem more eager to go for succes no matter the cost, Europeans on average take the cost side in into the equasion. If you get succesfull financially while ruining your personal life, the price is too high in my opinion.

Don't think we don't have dreams n goals in Europe. But maybe our goals n ambitions are less materialistic oriented. In other words, we dream less about "having" n more about "being/experiencing/feeling". Its undoubtedly a difference of values rooted in our culture. For example in my country you'd hear at least once per day someone (family, friends, neighbors etc) saying: when we die, we don't take anything with us, nothing of our material possessions. AND we have no idea when this will happen. So we live our lives according to this philosophy: we work, of course, to get a nice house, a good life for pur family, but we are the whole time aware that we will not live forever n therefore its more important to spend time with the ones we love, to experience new things, to learn n grow as persons, to become better, than to merely get richer. I hope my brief explanation made you understand us better. We do have ambitions, dreams n goals, but they are a bit less possession-oriented thsn in America

Yeah bro there are tons of videos out there like that. Lots of people have moved from the US to Europe and then move back home for whatever reason and have posted their culture shocks. In like the last 2 years I have become borderline obsessed with watching Americans learn about the rest of the world and things for the first time, It's kind of like watching babies and toddlers learn stuff for the very first time but also at the same time it's sad realising that their whole life was sometimes a lie as you get told in the USA to believe that there is nothing better than the USA and they are the greatest at everything.

I agree with both of you.... but I'm Scandinavian, so I have to point this out:
It is easiere to start up your own business in Denmark, than it is in the US (don't know about France)
And then I'd like to think that in Scandinavia via have more of a collective confidence, than an individual.
We KNOW, we can do incredible thing when we work together. We can get poison out of our food, we can build bridges and tunnels to other countries, we can become co2 neutral, we can recycle all our plastic.
We can accomodate refugees - and we can bloddy well get them out again, if needed. (I'm referring to WWII) We can feed our children and our old folks and fight homelessness and teenage pregnancies. We can make district heating, public transport, excelent schools... WE can do anything!
If you want to become stinking rich, it absolutely possible in Europe - it's just that most of us don't care.
Because, like in the rest of the world, you have to work your butt off - and sacrifice your LIFE with friends and family. Fewer Europeans are prepared to pay that price!
    Peace and love

The difference is that profits are taxed lower. So if you start earning, you earn more in the U.S. However.... I find it rather funny how these American kids don't realize that 'taking risks ' means there's a huge chance of not succeeding.(otherwise it wouldn't be a risk !) And if you fail in the U.S there's no social back up system like in Europe. The streets of America are filled with homeless people who took risks without having rich family to bail them out.

I think you are wrong when you say that it is like people are scared about taking chances in business adventures. It is not so much about people not being wiling to take chances but more like thinking a few steps further than just making a bucked load of money. Where in USA that might be the sole reason to go on a business adventure, in Europe there need to be something beyond that, as in the money itself should not be the reason to start a business but a stepping stone toward the "true" goal so to speak. Once that link is established I think you'd fine Europeans just as willing to do a start up as Americans. The drive is the same but making a lot of money just for the sake of making a lot of money does not have the same drive factor for a European as it would for an American.

The states is not the only country on the world to celebrate independence from the British and Halloween originated from the Celts in Ireland and ancient Britain. No, America is better for entrepreneurs because there is no worker protection. So "entrepreneurs" can squeeze their workers like a lemon up to the point of death and everyone will say it's the workers fault for not working hard enough.
P.S. I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and we are usually proud of our country. However, nobody will brag about it like Americans do but we always hear how great we are, our country is, etc.
We usually go, oh yeah? cool, it is kind of great isn't it?
The only time you'll hear people go mad with nationalism is during footy matches.

One common way to shop for foodstuff in europe - in particular for people with car-access - is to do a monthly bulkshopping, and then once-twice per week (usually on the way back from work) drop by a store to pick up perishables (produce, bread, dairy), really nets the best of both worlds.

That ego thing is not a bad thing.
We european also have it. It is just that it is normally balanced by other things so it doesn't get out of control too quickly.
I am sure that we can find this in the US with many people and many places also. The contrast with europe should be more about the way ones express it and also because of those few "free range" "loud asses that spoil the "image" for everybody else. 🙂We also have those but we usually keep them in a well fenced space so they don't s*** all over the place?
In Europe It will also depend on the people and on the country/place. But that balancing act of the ego is ones of the main things that makes the stereotypes of each country.
For example in my country there is still a strong component of the smaller community backed by the family nucleus. We even have some proudness on the image of a humble peasant that makes its small contribution to the whole of the community. The usual feeling of being embarrassed for our "low qualifications" is normally seen more on the kids but they surpass it quickly. Our society norms help in that.
We also have a long history (a global one at that) that makes us very proud of it (and even considered a evil one by some 😘 ).
So we have an apparent contradiction here. Be very proud and also be very humble? Can we value humbleness in origins and also value proudness in history? We manage it well enough. So much so that one of the stereotypes of our country is "friendly people". And the fact is that we truly like to meet new people totally different from us and be amazed by different ways and different history.
How do we do it? We can do it because those things are not really opposites. They are just human sentiments. So just be human. Just do it.
But do not forget that a human is naturally a "social animal" and in this way a human should be careful when despising the other humans or he will normally be less of itself and more of who know what.
And that applies to any of our action and even sentiments. Everything has some price to be payed.
In the end of the day, the whole of my earlier argument was all about stereotypes and basic kids truths. Which means that as in any stereotype, it was over the top with generalizations and cringe ideas.
So let me conclude with another generalization and cringe idea.
People are people. And just like, in your life you will probably never encounter 2 faces exactly the same (it is a question of probability so who know?), you will probably never encounter 2 person exactly the same. So making these argument about nationality and such is kinda fun and all (and even has some interesting insights).
But we should never take them really very seriously. That is normally a very bad start. Unless we want to be on the way to become a "dumb european"?
    P.S.:
When talking about entrepreneurship You mentioned that European have lack of self confidence? I think you misunderstood that part of european thinking. The fact is that, right or wrong, most european have a pretty strong self confidence about their capacity to make a business. Ambition is not subjugated. On the contrary. It is just that we prioritize other values so we don't care that much for what US citizens claim to care about. So our ambitions are more about other completely different thing than what you would think about.
When i was a kid and much more aggressive in my thinking, i would think about my "ambition argument" as an excuse to not face some fears or lack of confidence. But the more time passes and the more one sees that our "logic" as a kid will always be so limited and so naïve. Reality doesn't care about any of our so pretty "logic" or our "true philosophy".
This doesn't mean that one gets "wiser with age". It is another myth. 😞 But we get a much thicker skin!

With the culture argument, most that are seen as US culture have been imported and with commercialism, blown up into a bigger deal. Halloween for example, is from the UK/Celts.
There are plenty of entrepreneurs in Europe, but they will be respected for their ideas more than their bank account. Taking your dream, a European would put the animals ahead of being rich, only needing enough money to support the work.
In the words of Al Murray, we dont have an American Dream... because we're awake!! 😂

It all depend on the thrive, when you want to achive something, you can do it everywhere. US might have the biggest platform to do it, but you can reach your goals in Northen European countries, in UK, in Malaysia etc. My home country Estonia only has 1,3mil people but the most start-ups per person in Europe. Young people are really thrived to create the next Bolt or transferwise or Skype. Even in highschools, a lot of schools provide students to create their own companies by a early age. Europeans value education, good job positions but mainly we value good work-life balance, time off from work, paid vacations and maternal leaves so that we can rest, travel and 31:22 spend time with our families and after those weeks return to our job with a fresh new look, willing to be better in our jobs.

Here in Europe we also have those "entrepeneurs" and "dreamers". We also have people who are very ambitious. It's just not as inherent as it seems in the US.
If you want to climb the ladder in your company, you don't have to be better than others, you have to make sure the people higher up will _prefer_ you over your co-workers. A lot of people who aren't actually better than their co-workers try to _make_ themselves look good, so they get promoted instead of others who are better than them. That's something a lot of people don't appreciate and it's given "ambition" a bit of a bad rep, because it's perceived as elbowing people out of the way to get a promotion you don't actually deserve.
This boils down to: Promotions are given to the people who are best at making connections with people in higher positions, not to people who are the best at what they do.
In terms of cultural difference, people in Europe rather let their work speak for them, rather than advertising it. They don't actually _like_ patting themselves on the back, they prefer that others recognize their skills and therefore get the praise they deserve. Perhaps that's the main thing in how we don't come across as much as ambitious.

In the ROW (Rest Of the World) Americans are considered, on the whole, to have little to no culture. Now no-one would argue that the USA movie-world & fast-food are not a huge part of American life and of their exports. But the reason many different stratum in American are labelled "un-cultured" is because no-one's talking about Freddy Kruger or Dexter or Maccas, or actual movie actors when they say that. They're talking about culture as the Oxford dictionary defines it: "the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." A 'cultured' group of people are those who are familiar with ancient history & the painting of masterpieces; the architecture of their buildings, classical music, theatre, the writing of books which have changed the world, philosophy & science.
As you said - you couldn't give a damn about other countries, or what the ROW calls 'culture'. (Only you said you COULD😂 care less which means you DO care about it to some degree!)And a large chunk of people from the US feel the same way as you.Yet that, on the whole, is the chunk of people that get apoplectic (incredibly pissed off) when they learn they aren't regarded as cultured by the ROW. Somewhere along the road many of those kinds of people - who have absolutely zero interest in culture themselves - get all butt-hurt when they hear anyone from anywhere else pinning that "uncultured" tag on them.😁😁 It's always been a conundrum to me - people who trumpet loudly that they don't care about the ROW, get all defensive when they learn that everyone there agrees with them that the USA is not known for it's "manifestation of human intellectual achievement!!"🤭🤭

Culturally speaking, there is little to no American culture. football is related from rugby, Thanksgiving originates from the farmers who where offering for their gods, Halloween originates from pre-christian and christian time in Europe. The "southern" accents originates from the different parts of the UK. Unfortunately mostly of American culture were made in the old world. There are some exceptions, like Blues and Jazz, although many would claim that too because the instruments are from the old world. It's not like the Americans are not cultured but the US as a country had not enough time to develop a culture. The European cultures/nations developed over millennia. I would love to see the "new" culture over night, when everybody will stand up for another. From the people, for the people. Right?

Allow me to add some food for thought (especially to @dudesaysthings) as a person who has had to be bilingual (and, for a time, trilingual) soon in life. The development of complex language at a young age assists the development of synapses and thus of complex thoughts. So in the same way a child growing up with a high level of culture in the family grows advantaged in language and study and complex thought in general, a person who knows several languages especially as a kid learns mental flexibility. There are studies which confirm this.

LIfe is not better in Europe, there are differences like healthcare, different social behaviour etc etc. There are so many thing we in Europe can learn from the USA and vice versa. The world we live in has become so much smaller and the differences between the western countries are not that big at all so we suffer and benefit from the same things. I do believe that Americans are not as intrested in the rest of the world and the average knowledge is very very small, had the silliest discussion with americans about this.
The thing i notice when talking to americans which we as Europe also suffer from is the fact that the economy is not serving the people but we serve the Economy. Meaning that the intrests and influence of the multi natiinals has become way to big and many normal citizens are slowly degrading in financial position.
