- Brief overview of the North Star Trencherman II trencher backhoe. Walk through of the hydraulic system, which is the same for the DR, Harbor Freight and similar machines. I'll add another shout out for Surplus Center ! I bought a bunch of hydraulic stuff there to rebuild my old Kubota loader. Everything was in stock and shipping was fast. Can't beat them!

@@MuddFlappRanch Oh, you will hear back from me. lol. One question, how well does this dig? My area is mostly clay, so im thinking of stepping it up a bit with a larger engine/pump, more counter weight on the back end im thinking. Great details in the videos!
@@paulb1198 Definitely need more weight. This one does OK, but it will pull itself into the trench. I can hitch it to my truck or tractor, but that defeats the purpose of having a lightweight, maneuverable trencher.

Northern Tools started selling these again, after I made this video series. Not much difference with the new one, looks like a fabricated boom, instead of the square tube, bigger motor and pump. Thanks for watching!

But verify with the one on your machine, they had several different versions of this trencher, with some minor differences. I cross the one on the most recent version and it is the same. Just about any hydraulic filter with a 10 micron filtration and the same thread should work just fine. These machines only run 3 GPM on the hydraulics.

I had same problem on my h f trecher
What I found was lose cylinder bolts caused it to bleed off I rebuild it easy
But at hose attachment I increase the feed hole to get more fluid not for speed
But make machine more efficient an increase size of main feed hose to add to efficiency again not speed but most efficient

All hydraulic cylinders have a certain amount of leak-by the internal seals that is considered normal.
While that rate on the one cylinder is high, it's not going to make the unit fail to do the work desired.
Harbor Freight's towable comes with seal sets to replace the internal seals. They expect the things to have some that leak by that much and ship it with the parts to fix it. (maybe... might take 2 seal sets before it stops doing that so badly)
Just typical quality control of cheap Chinese manufactured hydraulics.
You can find higher quality seals. They might cost as much as the replacement cylinders from the makers of these things.
Cost to value, they aren't bad deals. But they aren't the quality of a Yanmar, Volvo or even a Kubota.
I agree with the lack of quality control and with the normal internal leakage. To compare this machine to a full size backhoe or excavator is not a fair comparison. It will dig a hole, but it will take a while.
They are nortrac towable trencher now $3500 but they are electric start 18 HP 3.8 GPM pump
Yes, they started selling them again after I made this video. Probably due to the dozens of people that watched this series. Maybe I should ask them to send me one :)
