    -get more advance in Japanese
-find great Japanese friends to practice with
    -learn all basic French
    -try out Arabic and Chinese
I did get good Japanese friends and my Japanese level did get better.

Oh my god a person who works 10-7! Finally a video featuring someone with the same mentally draining work schedule who doesn't have 24 hours a day to dedicate to language learning. This is honestly so refreshing because by the time I punch out, cook dinner, exercise, and do the dishes, it's 9PM, I'm mentally and physically drained from the day, and I get a good 1-2 hours of Korean study *barely*. I always feel so behind comparing myself to people with a lot more structurable time.. I am really trying to maximize my time this year and keep my big study binges for weekends when I have the extra energy to spare.

This year I have given birth to my first child, which has had a huge impact on everything. My original plan was to reach N3 in Japanese and (passive) B2 in German, but I ended up taking a break from Japanese and only studying German on and off. Instead, I have fallen in love with Italian all over again and have made a ton of progress, which was totally unexpected. I am even considering studying for C1 next year.

I've really surprised myself on my own language learning goals this year. I was studying Korean for fun for a few years, but since moving to Korea, I've only felt really pressured to learn it (by both myself and others), and it's really turned me off to learning it. I've since taken a break from it. In that time, I've started learning other languages that I'd put on the back burner for one reason or another, and have found my motivation to be MUCH higher with Chinese and ASL. I know I will come back to Korean, because I really do love it, but I had forgotten that fun and joy with learning it. Your channel really makes me feel okay with the ups and downs of language learning and I really appreciate that 🥰

The biggest thing I've learned from making yearly goals is that goals can change drastically over the course of a year haha. So even though every year I technically "fail" to achieve 100% of my goals, I still enjoy setting yearly goals because it's also really interesting to look back on what your past self really wanted to achieve. For the sake of actually achieving goals, though, I agree that setting goals in shorter periods is much more attainable.

The pandemic made it a big problem for balancing time. Working from home is very difficult and I used to go to classes where that’s where I did schools and go home and relax and learn. Now that my classes are in my personal room and space. I procrastinate a lot more and get behind and my studies with school overlap with language learning. It’s a rough time in 2020. I was able to learn some but I can’t wait til classes and places are opened

All my classes for my bachelors were online and I just graduated in October. The pandemic didn't change a lot in terms of my daily life. I'm realizing that maybe when I start my masters in January, I should set up an area of the house (like the basement) where I work on school work, and then come up stairs and work on language learning as if I was in a different space entirely. I don't know if it will work, but I struggle big time with procrastination and lack of mental energy.

I'm still a newbie language learner compared to you and still finding my feet with it, so I was really relieved to hear you say about habits over goals. I feel like so many polyglots push having a concrete goal and I've just never really jibed with that. My end goal is complete fluency, but I'd rather enjoy the journey to get there than beat myself up for not reaching X goal in however many months and make myself feel like a failure if I don't get there. I don't see how that's supposed to be encouraging, I'd rather feel like I'm chipping away at it through daily habits and keep my passion alive.

Your comments about how the people you interact with affect your learning are so true. I realise now how lucky I was when I started learning Spanish to find my Spanish community really quickly - a small class of people around my age who all went to a bar after class to keep practising, a conversation club in a bar every week etc. With Italian I just haven’t found that same kind of connection with anyone and I really haven’t learned in the same way

the whole habits over goals is such a great mindset! I noticed it myself as well, I had much smaller goals than u. But I found it hard to stick to it when it's a goal - smth so far off in the future "read a whole book in German", and things were working out much nicer when I had enough time and energy for reading a few pages twice a week. I had a much better feeling about the whole thing even thought I wasnt moving along faster with the book.
also your point about time not equaling mental energy. thats so true, ive been working from home since march and i feel like i get done less than i would have last year around this time. even tho i finish work at 6-7 (much later than i would at the office), i dont have energy to sit down to do a german lesson/read. the only thing that i kept is watching tv shows in german on netflix (at least smth)

Finding a good teacher online is so difficult! On italki, I usually enjoy classes with community tutors rather than the "professional" teachers. Most of my teachers have focused strictly on grammar and either teach material that's too difficult or too easy even after I have communicated my needs. I've learned that I prefer to study alone or in meaningful interactions with native speakers that adjust to my level.

I'm finally getting around to learning and when I drive with my dad it's mostly enjoyable and I'm pretty confident driving around town with him. But when I got around to doing proper lessons the instructor would call out every single last mistake, not matter how minor, and it honestly made me not wanna drive for a little bit. I'm very much self-deprecating but I decided to change it for the better. Heck, I'm even considering doing a review series for different Russian UA-cam educators on what kind of content, resources, and experience they offer. Something else that helped me was writing down what I achieved in regards to language learning and looked at my progress daily. It was somewhat like game, like "leveling up" if I had to use a phrase for it. So, that's my comment. Happy language learning to all, and stay safe!

In the middle of the pandemic, and after hitting rock bottom in some areas, I finally decided to return to French, after a six year hiatus. The experience of immersing myself in language learning has been a refreshing opportunity to forget briefly about the stress in my life. People like you have given me the inspiration to pursue this journey. One of my key takeaways of your videos is that I should cherish the journey of language learning, perhaps far more than the destination. The fact that my French shows, series and news outlets are still there, regardless of what happens in the world, is a true blessing in the middle of this pandemic.

It's not time management, it's energy management that is the actual kicker!
I did a little energy tracker, I'd just give myself a score out of 10 on a graph tracking my waking hours, it had really interesting results! Hadn't realised how much food affects energy.

This video was exactly what I needed! I'm planning to go back at studying languages and also follow some new hobbies, but in my life I always struggled a lot with setting goals, they make my anxiety even worse and I end beating myself up all the time. In the past couple of months I also understood that I have to prioritize habits instead of (sometimes impossible) goals. Whatching your video and hearing you talking about this same thoughts REALLY helped me, I feel so motivated thanks to you right now! Thank you so much for sharing your journey, you are amazing! :)

Your videos are so inspiring! This year has been crazy for me too. I was planning on starting Japanese and German and getting my C1 on Catalan, but everything got really hard and I wasn't able to focus on anything. Japanese is so difficult, but so fun... And it makes me think that German is actually quite easy because I can, at least, read it out loud! Hahaha Thank you for your videos and I wish you a great 2021!

I think it is important to track how we feel about things, cause to me it's crazy how our mindset does change as we grow up and what we do and don't get interested in!

I totally agree with U , especially when you said we should focus on habits and systems instead of the goal itself (sorry for my English, I'm learning it) One of my 2021 goals is learning French so I'll divide my study plan in 3 months as you said. Thank U a million for this video😍

Time does not equall mental energy
Here's my take on that, I learned it the hard way, I thought that since I had a lot of time working from home I could register in all the courses of the semester + 1, besides that my full time job, I didn't do great at work and procrastinated a lot college assignments. Mid year I asked for an unpaid month leave because I really needed a break and here I am, at the start of my break reevaluating everything I was doing.

Unfortunately, I discovered you and your videos just a few months ago but even with such a short amount of time, I was motivated by you to pick back up my French, from High school, and even start learning Chinese. Thank you so much for this, you make such amazing content which makes me always work harder. I would be even happier if I could find more videos about Chinese on your channel. :)

There were many ups and downs this year in my Korean learning journey. I registered for TOPIK II (which I should have taken in May, but ended up taking in October). I had trouble staying motivated but I discovered last Friday that I passed the test (3급) which was my goal for this first try. Now I'd like to pass level 4, I'll have to work a lot more in order to make it :-)

I started the year with just one goal - to try to learn Chinese every day, and now my streak on Memrise is 327 days (I'm going for 365!), then this October I joined Indonesian A1 class and even had time for Korean practice every few weeks. I feel like this year has been great in terms of language learning but I never learned 2 languages at the same time this is why I came to your channel for motivation and some tips :)
btw - if you are still interested in Indonesian - there's a free Zoom course organized by the Indonesian embassy, it's just 1 hour per week so it's not very time-consuming. We're currently in the middle of it but I'm sure next year they'll start again :)

I started with Czech in March, I thought that it would be easy to learn during Lockdown. I had motivation problems as well. A surprise was Hungarian. I live in Vienna and many Hungarians live here. I found very nice people, speaking partners. Other slavic languages were also on my plans but my Italian friends helped me to become a better cook and a better Italian speaker!

    Yay Tagalog! Congrats.
I stopped learning Italian after 2 years to focus on Russian because I got a girlfriend. Then I stopped learning Russian after 8 months because we broke up and I lost all motivation.
However, I returned to Spanish and was going to stop because I was comfortable at my B1+. But then I discovered Élite (through Season 1) and I want to study all the slang expressions to understand everyone. I've also gone back to listening to German in preparation to converse work my other friend when we exercise. It will take at least 3 months to get confident to speak, but it's my only language plan for now.

A great motivating video as usual! Good luck with Tagalog and Hungarian (etc) in 2021 😁
I don't expect anyone to read the below but it was helpful to think about it & review, so thanks Lindie!
    - - - -
For me in 2020 I learnt more business Japanese from work and got more advanced at reading, typing and listening (I highly recommend " シノブとナルミの毒舌アメリカンライフ" which a chat podcast by 2 funny Japanese women living in Texas), but my spoken Japanese level (because I haven't done much) plummeted :( Also I didn't do any Mandarin until October/November which was lazy.
For 2021, at least the first half while still at home because of restrictions, I aim to go from zero to become comfortable at basic Spanish conversation, and get back into the swing of Mandarin! And keep French and Japanese on maintenance 😁
    Good luck everyone!

I agree that goals are hard to maintain, priority and life changes, but I still find it to be enjoyable to plan and write what I would like to accomplish, what my interests are, and later look back and see how things changed, what I did manage to accomplish. The act of setting goals is also motivating to me, even if I don’t manage to keep up with them all in the long run.

My Spanish learning plan went out the window the past 4 months. Some days I barely touched it or didn’t do anything. With all the anxiety around my job in healthcare during COVID, my mental energy was gone by the time I tried to start studying. So I stopped studying. Instead I read a short article or listened to a short podcast. When I felt like grammar session, I studied. This year to too stressful to hold ourselves to a hard timeline.

being stopped after every word- i think you explained it well. this was literally my korean teacher! i'd volunteer in class but he'd stop me/others after 1-3 words and point out the mistake. i just kind of stopped volunteering after a while. so i know a lot of grammar but cannot use it cause i didn't want to practice and use it.

This was so insightful, thank you! I started seriously self-studying Spanish this year (it was the only thing my brain could focus on for several months - my entire industry was shut down because of the pandemic). Now I have higher aspirations with my language learning, but I'm also starting a new job next year, so your tips on goal setting and managing time and energy are really helpful. Hello from the UK!

You're right about how people in one's life affect the language learning process. I chose Arabic because of the interesting people I've met with ties to the language, besides it being a personal challenge. And I'm happy that you met someone who makes you blush so much, it's been a while since I've seen anyone genuinely have that look you had when you spoke about him. All the best!

I agree so much with the part of time is not equal to energy! My energy levels have fluctuated a lot, a few months ago I was studying german a lot and now I'm doing like the bare minimum, but as you say, I've learned to kind to myself.
