  • I have had a lot of people ask me how I preserve a turkey fan and beard. In this video I go through step by step on how I preserve my turkey fans. It is super simple and very easy to do this yourself and can save you a ton of money in taxidermy bills. I hope you all enjoyed this video!

Great job on the fans. Might want to give this a try. It's more tedious but u come out with a slick clean mount. Just like you did I take it down to the two sets of feathers. Then I go one more and separate the fan feathers from that front row feathers. Now you have two sets of feathers. Take one set (fan) and separate the left side from the right side by slicing down through the middle two feathers. Now take each side and keep them in their respective piles. Take and slice between each quill to separate all the feathers into individual feathers. Take each feather and with a paper towel grab the fat and goop at the bottom and squeezing tightly and pull. This will leave the end clean as a whistle (like you've seen for a quill pen) Do this for all the feathers in each of the four piles. Then lay your fan feathers out in the correct position on cardboard as you did and hot glue the quills at the base. I put blue painters tape across the fan to hold it in place while hot glueing. Then do the same for the front feathers. Put the 2 together and voila. Takes me about 1 1/2 hrs start to finish. No waiting days to dry. I've probably done in excess of 250 this way.
    Love your channel

This was really cool to see, Mike. Thanks for walking us thru it. I have never heard of there being turkeys up here and definitely don't know of anyone who has gone turkey hunting, let alone preserving they fans. It's really interesting though -I enjoyed this video very much. I'd also love to see the bobcat video. Thanks again, Mike. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Heather🇨🇦

I do mine with alum 40% & 60% sea salt. Let it sit for about 5 days. Alum does tanning on the meat. I use the same formula for hides. For the the pudding you can use bondo.

Try your wire wheel n your bench grinder and a pair of side cutters. It's much faster. Then sprinkle borox and shake it off. Lay your fan out, mix a golf ball size ball of bondo. Press your feather quills into the bondo. Realign feathers. Wait a half hour and it's ready for your plaque. Takes abut an hour or so. No need to wait for it to dry out. Give it a try. I've been doing taxidermy for 23 years works great.

L use alum which is aluminum sulfate a make a 50/50 solution and let soak over night. It pickles it then dry in borax and pin in position.and dry. epoxy, I use the same solution on my capes for mounting for 2 days then add half cup tide for a day to help stretch the hide where you need to when sewing.

I have my first fan still hanging on the wall after 20+ years the tips of the feathers have begun to fray. Can this be fixed or should I have coated them with something in the past to prevent It? I thought maybe hairspray or clear spray paint may have prevented this. Any suggestions to fix or to prevent on a future mount? Thanks
