Re: Military tech developments leaking into the civilian market a good example is the theremin.
A theremin was originally developed as an array to detect incoming aircraft, but found its true role & purpose in being the first electronic instrument ever developed.

Eastern Germans were dissatisfied with the GDR/DDR and wanted to join West-Germany because the capitalist system of the BRD seemingly did a better job in providing the population with goods of higher quality, then many were disillusioned because their economic situation got even worse and now the unified state and economy have developed to a level of control and coercion thet many feel equaly unfree and the goal of a nice car and travelling around the world is still a mirage
