We speak with reproductive justice activist Renee Bracey Sherman about Ohio Senator JD Vance, whose history of sexist remarks has come under scrutiny since he was chosen to be Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Bracey Sherman says Vance’s attacks on women who do not have biological children and his promotion of a kind of “trad” lifestyle harkening back to 1950s norms show he is out of touch with modern families. “The short answer is he’s a weirdo. The longer answer is he’s a white supremacist and he’s a white nationalist,” Bracey Sherman says in explaining Vance’s ideology.

Poor women have always worked, had to. Even agricultural women worked their farms along with their husbands. Widows had to work.lMinority women in the cities couldn’t live off what their husbands earned due to their race. Wealthy and middle class white women got to be SAHM.

Weathly and middle class white women were SAHM while women of color or poor white women worked for the SAHM house staff as nannies, servants, maids, housekeepers, cooks, laundresses, etc.

I think brown women: Latinos and South-Asians are considered 3rd class here below 2nd class East Asians and white women in our caste system. Blacks, of course are 4th class. South Africa came up with rules like that too, where Indian-immigrants were below white men but above Blacks, and couldn't mingle either.

You missed the point. It's not about women staying at home to care for the children, or in the kitchen or the bedroom; it's about women being under a man's thumb, like the Rolling Stones song. But more than just the girlfriend or ex-girlfriend, traditional Patriarchal values means controlling your teenage daughter and your girlfriend/wife. Their reward for being subservient is to be above 3rd class brown people and 4th class Black people.

It's not specifically about taking care of the children or being in the kitchen. Female subservience is about being under a man's thumb, which means doing as he says. That's true of the wife under her husband or teenage girl under her father. If the husband says you can be a lawyer, then she can be.

They made that book into an unsuccessful movie this year called, _Origin._ South Africa had a three-tiered system with Indian immigrants in the middle. But I think we have 4 with white women and East-Asians ("Sent me off to kill the yellow man" -Springsteen) in the 2nd tier, brown people (Latinos, South Asians and Middle Easterners) in the third. So being 2nd class isn't that demeaning for a woman if she's above two other groups.

I dusted off my Cat Lady t-shirt cuz of JD's comments. 😂😂😂 I'm a RESPONSIBLE adult, I didn't have kids because I can't afford them. Cats are more affordable and I am proud that I rescued them. If it weren't for me, they'd have been feral and dead by now or living in a shelter.

Well, some men do think that white people should reproduce more and others less, and that traditional gender roles are conducive to that. But I don’t think JD Vance is that person. Im a black woman who was a stay at home mom in the 80s. I was poor, made all my childs food, much if which I grew in my back yard. I fought black progressive women on one hand for not going out there and taking advantage of our relative shiny new rights for education and work. I had to fight white women on the other hand, who had husbands with careers and jobs that made my husbands paltry income look like a side hustle. I homeschooled and further alienated myself even from stay at home moms. I was also a community organizer who led reform alongside Arnold Mireles in Chicago.
People like silos, and they want you to fit neatly in theirs. When I finally did go to work when my kid was in 7th grade, the stay at homers felt i betrayed them and the women black and white who had gone to Uni and were 10 years or advanced in their careers looked down on me.
I ended up finding a place in immigrant communities. Many of my peers who came from other countries collaborated with me both when I stayed at home and when I worked.
We would do well to let people do what is best for themselves and their families.
If someone wants to be a childless cat lady let them. If someone wants to moderate their lifestyles to be a stay at home parent let them.
That is what Feminism is all about. Equality and self-determination.

As a strong supporter of abortion and women having full control and decisions over their own bodies, I find it does not do "that cause" any service when Ms. Sherman sports a shirt boasting multiple abortion. Without context some viewers may wonder if she's had 6, 4 or 2, again without context her T shirt announcement makes her look wildly irresponsible. Ms Sherman begins the interview by announcing she is a childless woman and that her life is amazing. Without any more information offered than that, it seem the abortions that made her childless has resulted in her life becoming amazing. Strange things to say and project without the back story. Not sure if I'm the only one finding this odd coming from one of the leaders from this movement. Ms. Sherman's shirt messaging and early comments seems like a bit of bragging mixed in with some careless living from her past.

Hello All! I came here this morning to say that although I am a childless woman who happens to have a savior who is of feline origin. What this guy says doesn't influence me either way. He's a man with his own viewpoints. Should he have authority over others based on his spoken beliefs, I wager no. A lot of people who I have to communicate with in our very biased society as a means to receive functional healthcare are discriminatory in a multitude of ways. This guy is one of many wearing their bias openly. Regardless of what conversation is being had here this countries issues are far more vast. We should spotlight everyday issues that the disability community is harme through. It is comical to be upset by this man in lieu of the greater society and systemic injustices.

After learning about the common happenstance of miscarriage and babies dying in the womb but women not being allowed to have an abortion on a dead or brain-dead baby, I think making it normal is the way to go. Hey, I'm Black and I make everything from scratch. Mostly because I wasn't born in the US, and because I don't trust processed food. I understand that the vag*nas of Black women have not historically been on pedastals like those of white women so I hear what Ms Sherman is saying. But dang, it's not just white women who make stuff from scratch. In fact, a lot of Black women have had to make food, clothing, etc from scratch because we didn't have the money to buy processed stuff or we had to be creative with whatever we could find for dinner. I don't like D Vance but I think his answer in the interview was more anticipatory than anything. He assumed he knew what the interviewer was asking him to expound on. Just saying that you guys need a better set of interviews and some of his flakier comments to really show how dangerous he might be. Folks like me who tend to give even weirdo folks the benefit of the doubt. We need more fodder to be convinced that a weirdo actually means harm. Also, the Black community has been very accommodating to weirdos so callling someone a weirdo is a very cosmopolitan white thing to say and shows a narrow mindset. So if we have a woman of color speaking as if she doesn't understand the varieties of living situations that Black women and women of color have endured then we simply will think Ms Sherman lived in a city being clueless about the lives of other minority women. After this interview, I found myself feeling more connected to Vance's weirdness than to Ms Sherman. And i repeat I don't like the guy. I'm convinced he's worrisome but I didn't click with Ms Sherman much either. I got the feeling that she would find anyone who is unlike her a "weirdo."

I'm a gay man and I believe that a woman should have the right to do what she wants with her own body. And I also believe that there are times when you have to have an abortion because the baby might not make it full term. Or there's something wrong with it or rape or anything like that. Attacking Vance as a white supremacist is not going to stick because he has a non-white wife and biracial children with East Indian names. In fact, this whole line of attack and the individual delivering it are all wrong. Sherman is not necessarily wrong about things but she is the partisan analog of someone on the Right who advocates positions in ways designed not to enlighten people or draw new people in but to trigger her enemies. This is the total wrong way to attack Vance.
The correct way to attack Vance is to show that he has no actual plan to boost wages and allow for a single income to support a family, that is he selling a bill of goods. Vance's populism is a con game and it needs to be exposed in real terms the average voter can understand, in terms of labor and the distribution of wealth and government spending. This attitude of "don't you hate me because I had abortions" is a turn off to people not heavily into politics online and they will dismiss anything said by someone they see as totally unlike them.
Actually, it is conservative policies that have boosted incomes for lower wage workers all the way back to the JFK tax cuts. Anyone can go into the IRS data and see the truth for themselves.
The bottom 20% of wage earners had their income raise the fastest after the 2017 tax cuts. Something Democrats will never be able to do because of their failed policies.
The conservative policies of lower taxes, less immigration, less regulation, tighten up the labor market. Allowing for advancement, rising wages, allow for mobility, allow people with low job skills or lousy work records to get decent jobs, and give people dignity. If Harris actually cared about working people and was capable of empathy she would be a Kennedy/Reagan conservative.

When Friedman or whoever farted that theory out of their butt we didn't really have the data to test it. It was just a reasonable sounding justification to make the rich richer. Now we know, empirically through the interrogation of data, that it is complete garbage. So you will have to move on from Reaganomics if you want to convince people other than ignorant Trumpers.

Well, some people wish gays would go back in the closet.
