    Even if you start low, keep at it. I started as a WG 5 cook, I’m now a GS13 Branch Chief. I didn’t have any college degree when I made Branch Chief. I have gotten my masters since then.

      @@GinaMariaOpalescentI don't mean to give what sounds unhelpful, but it really depends on you. I didn't advance much for 12 years because I wasn't applying myself. When I really leaned into advancing I went from gs5 to gs11 in 5.5 years.

    I started as a GS-4 Radiology Clerk doing scheduling and check-in with no medical experience. I'm now a GS7 Step 7 and because of locality pay I make over $73,000 a year, though in most parts of the country the pay would be closer to the mid-$50,000. My rent is cheap (because I'm super freaking lucky my landlord isn't a greedy douche) and my last car payment is in a couple months. And my kid just graduated high school and got a job as a carpenter the following week. This has been my year financially. Oh, and I work remote from home five days a week. I don't have a college degree. It was a long hard road to get here and my starting pay was poverty wages but I stuck it out. You have to take the long view but it is so worth it. Paid vacation, paid sick leave, Federal holidays off and paid. You can't beat Federal service with a stick.

      Nice ! I was offered GS4 step 2 MSA position , just awaiting Fjo. Some say why take a $30 k pay but, I know the end goal is a long term achievement compared to the for profit agency. Which agency do you work at the Gs7 level ? And you are remote - blessings to youuuuuuu! You inspired me !

      @@Agapelovealwayz I work for the department of veterans affairs . Healthcare not benefits. I'm a scheduler lead. We book Tele health visits for vets that live in remote areas or vets that can't get timely care with a specialist locally. You'd be amazed at how bad the shortage is for Rheumatologists and Endocrinologists are both inside and outside the VA. The doctor shortage is real.

    I'm a Canadian... wanting to get out of Canada to live in a nation that values freedom and the pursuit of happiness by the individual.
    Are there jobs open to foreign workers WITH the skills, experience, and compatible values?

    Morning Armand. First, can you tell me when you have your livestreams so that I can get some questions answered? Just took a lower paying job (Accountant)/Step 9 and am wondering if I made the wrong choice. For example, how do I stay in a role and fight for a step 11, at the end of the first year or do I just keep applying for public jobs and make the jump at that point of an offer? It took me more than 10 years to get in so I felt desperate even though I have an MBA and been working in the area of business/accounting for more than 30 years.

    I had recently applied for a GS-7 a few days ago to promote from a GS-5 that i'm at currently, and I heard back about a day or 2 after the announcement closed. I was not considered for the position. reason being after reading the reason why, I discovered I accidently uploaded the wrong SF-50 to my usajobs profile when I applied for the position, and I didn't think to double check before the job announcement closed. It was an error on my part. but that very position I see it open at the base I work at, at least once a month or so, give or take.

    I've had the problem of not being able to convince the hiring managers that my experience is at the GS-12 level. Certain jobs will have you managing a multi-million dollar facility by yourself, but you only make similar pay to a GS-7, when in reality, you're doing the job of a GS-12. I was in a very high-responsibility position in the military at a low rank due to circumstances. I was paid by my rank of E-2 or E-3, yet I did the job of someone in a much higher pay grade. How do you translate that experience for hiring managers?

    • @mandyk510
      @mandyk510 4 місяці тому

      I’m assuming you are saying that you’re having trouble with this on your resume and not at the actual interview? Definitely use the USAJobs resume builder (don’t add your salary or any info that is optional unless it works in your favor). For each job on your resume in the duties section the first thing to put is “GS-12 equivalent” (or whatever equivalence you think that job is). Tailor your resume for the job to the qualifications/specialized experience section of the announcement not the duties section (previewing the vacancy questionnaire will provide further insight into how to tailor your resume). Over explain how your duties align with qualifications they’re looking for and reword using the terms they’ve used in the announcement as needed because if the HR specialist can’t connect the dots, your resume might not make it to the hiring manager. Hope this helps.

    The promotion in five years into a GS15 is incorrect. It doesn’t work that way in the government.

    • @armandcuret1

      Technically, you only need 52 weeks to be eligible for the next higher grade level. Some people spend exactly that amount of time, some spend a lot more.
      GS9 to GS11 = 12 months
      GS11 to GS12 = 12 months
      GS12 to GS13 = 12 months
      GS13 to GS14 = 12 months
      GS14 to GS15 = 12 months
      Total = 5 years
      In a federal government job with a promotion ladder built-in, it is possible to go from GS9 to GS15 in five years.
      This will depend on your performance, the ageny and your supervisor. Is it likely? Maybe not. But it can be done.
