THANK YOU for going into the A24 comparison. Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of younger/newer horror fans over the last five or so years talk about how A24 is revolutionizing the genre. I've even heard people say the past years have been the best years in horror ever because of A24. I've talked to these people and most of them don't watch any movies that came out before the 90s. Little do they know, there is no such thing as elevated horror. It's psychological horror and cult/folk horror, and both of those genres have been around for decades. My hope is they all decide to go back and take in some of the classics like I did when I was younger because there are many great films from decades past and you get a greater appreciation for the genre.

    • @midlevelmedia

Yes, Rosemary's Baby is the king of horror, or at least top 3 all time imo. I think the main factor that separates it from the pack is the intelligence of the script; it somehow manages the impossible, turning a 2 hr. movie into the immersive depth of a novel.

Was lucky enough to see this film for the very first time on the big screen when I was in college at USC in the late 1990's. I was a film minor in addition to my major in architecture. "Rosemary's Baby" was one of the films that we screened in our "History of Cinema" course from 1950 to present day. Classic film for so many reasons and a great example of the culture of the late 1960s. It was a controversial film at the time and continues to be for other reasons today but that's what makes it so intriguing and unsettling. Happy to have it in my collection finally.

Yes, the 4K plays somewhat darker than the Criterion. However, as we watched them back to back, the Criterion seemed to hot, with some scenes playing artificially too bright and too soft. The dialog was off sync, at the beginning, but "reversing" the film back a short bit and replaying it, cleared the problem right up. Not necessary to stop the player and start over. Just a quick reverse seems to do the trick. This seems a minor hiccup, that is easily fixed. We agree with you about all the criticism of Roman Polanski. He's a great director, and we have no intention of ridding ourselves of his films. Not watching his films solves nothing. Absolutely nothing. His talent, as a director, goes unchallenged for originality, the outstanding performances he gets from actors, the moods his films are imbued, impeccable directing and editing. So glad to hear how much you like "Rosemary's Baby." What makes it so eerie is that it's about atmosphere, foreboding, and the anxiety inducing anticipation that comes from not knowing what's coming, who to trust and who to fear. It's not about the pyrotechnics and in-your-face graphic horror, but Polanski's trusting in the audience to give them a slow-burn, and unsettling film of ever growing menace. Loved it in the theater, decades back ... and still enjoy one of the premier horror films of all time. A classic in every sense of the world ... and was on its initial release.

Excellent comments about why the film succeeds. I must mention audio/video sync problems. That's an issue I've noticed several times when watching films on disc, particularly 4k discs. On my Sony ubp-700m player it has a control to adjust a/v synch that fixes the issue, but then I have to readjust on a subsequent film. I think this issue is relatively common where player and sound system don't communicate perfectly at all times.

I watched Rosemary's Baby last night, for the first time in 20 to 30 years. I believe I saw it on DVD or a movie channel, so the picture was very much improved but I did notice that most of the scenes played a little dark. I agree the dream sequence was the visual peak.
I found myself hating her neighbors and her husband way more this time, than the first time, though.

Aside from the audio sync issue, there is actual dialogue missing near the end when Rosemary is in labor. Instead of hearing Dr. Sapirstein say, "We happen to be in labor here", all you hear is the last word of that line (here). The full line of dialogue is present on the Criterion disc and the standard Paramount blu-ray from a few years ago. This is certainly the best looking release we have so far, but I consider it defunct on account of the audio issues. Paramount would really impress me if they did a disc replacement program for this one, but I won't hold my breath.

This movie was really stellar...for its time in cinema history. Without alot of SPX's...just good acting, mounting suspense and good exposition. The scene where you see the close up of Satan's eyes is always a shocker. another example of practical organic effects. This and the Omen are several of my favorites. Great review - first time watch all the way through for me. I think the very “pale” look of the original film is what may contribute to not seeing a large difference from the blu ray. I’m going to get the Criterion 2nd market for the historical context of it, but I did think the 4k looked good for a 55 year old film. Wondering if it was just “original intent” of that controversial Director 😉 Not sure but I get your point. The red is what popped the most in this film. Otherwise the rest of it just looked “pale” to me.

great review of rosemary's baby ken
roman polanski is a interesting director
you made some interesting comparisons to a24
and seperating the art from the artist
    i couldnt agree more
    my thoughts on the film:
polanski did manage to do this film justice
    which is a good thing
    thoughts on the director:
polanski directed lots of movies after this
he later directed a version of Macbeth which was in 1971
polanski also later directed chinatown with jack nicholson which was in 1974
BEFORE Nicholson directed the sequel the two jakes in 1990
then you have a movie called the tenant which polanski directed,
then you also have a movie polanski directed called Tess which was from 1979
then polanski directed pirates in 1986
polanski also later directed Frantic with harrison ford which is a 1988 suspense film which is a film that Pre-dates the andrew davis the fugitive film, because the situations in frantic seem similar to the fugitive
polanski also directed a movie called bitter moon which has peter coyote and hugh grant, that film was in 1992
then you also have death and the maiden from 1994, the pianist from 2002, oliver twist from 2005, and venus in fur from 2013
the point i am making :
there is a arguement to be made about seperating the art from the artist
or the art from the director
we should appreciate his work, Not judge him just because he was getting in a lot of crazy situations with critics

Being attracted to pre pubescent children is a real thing and it’s sick as hell. And yeah it’s pretty easy either way. You watch the movie and take it on it’s own merit. If nobody talked about Polanski you wouldn’t know. Just pretend you don’t know. It’s not like Leon the professional… in which not only is luc besson probably more question than Polanski but the movie itself (especially the directors cut) actually has a bit of questionable content related to a young girl.

I went into watching The Exorcist with a lot of expectations because people said it was the greatest horror flick of all time and I was disappointed when I watched it the first time. I was like “This is it?” But I went into watching Rosemary Baby expecting to be disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s was really good and original. I like The Witch, but as an American it’s really hard to understand that old English style vocabulary, even Irish accented people I have a hard time deciphering the words.

It's strange for me that americans have a hard time with the dialect in The Witch. I'm german and for me it sounds like many other english dialects and I have no trouble understanding it. It seems as if not being a native speakers helps in this one case. ^^
I was also disappointed by The Exorcist. It just doesn't work for me. But I have that problem with possession stories in general.
Rosemaries Baby is great however. I must admit that I find it kind of comical at points also. But that's fun and doesn't necessarily take away from the horror.

Anyone out there who hasn’t read the book should do themselves a favor and read it, you’ll be surprised with how the movie is almost a beat for beat retelling of the book yet, as usual, you get a little more info with the novel. The dream sequence especially is explained in detail in the book. Incredible movie

I don’t expect every 4K release to look crisp or have that pop. But this transfer makes it look dated and well 55 years old. There’s plenty older movies that look spectacular in 4K like 10 Commandments, Spartacus,Apocalypse Now, etc. This was also a first time watch for me and as a huge horror fan I don’t really consider it horror, it’s not very scary and yes I know scary doesn’t always equal horror. Well Jaws to me is horror and scary. Slow Burna don’t bother me but man it took forever to get going. Maybe a rewatch or other reviews can change my mind cuz I know it’s considered a classic.

Wow man, that's a pretty strong reaction to people voicing their desire to not support a director because of the crimes he's committed. And let's not beat around the bush, he's a sexual abuser of children. If some people can't separate the art from the artist and other people can, fine. Most of us realize hundreds of people work on films, and it isn't just that one director that loses money when people don't buy their movie. Maybe we don't want studios to continue hiring pedophiles and the only way we can influence their decisions is with our wallets? Just be glad people are commenting and feeding the algorithm to increase your viewership, and maybe don't scold your commentors for voicing completely understandable opnions, yeah?

If that's the colors of this movie, in the clips you show, it looks terrible. Brown and gray. Yuck. Dark videos are dreary and ugly.

It's always looked like that. It's the way it was shot 55 years ago. You'd be complaining more if they'd DNRd the picture and added colour etc where none existed before.
I own the criterion version and watched this new 4k last night with the lights off and thought it looked excellent. An accurate representation of the original look of the movie.
If you're watching on a decent 4k screen which is set up properly and has gold brightness levels, this is how it's supposed to look.
That same dark comment is always levelled at 4k. It's naturally darker as its as close to watching at the cinema as you are likely to get... And I don't recall ever watching a movie on the big screen with the lights turned on either.
