The best month of releases in a very long time imo, I'm excited by them all which doesn't often happen. Lone Star finally getting an upgrade from standard definition is huge. Love every John Sayles film I've seen.
Would you be able to do a video on all the different/various boutique labels in a single video covering what are the plus, minus, and unique feature of each label? An overview of them all would be quite awesome for the community.
Hey Elliot! hope you’re having a great day! i would be very interested in seeing you make a video about Netflix movies you think deserve the criterion treatment and why (and maybe a few from other streaming platforms.) not sure if you already have a video about this. Thanks for making such good quality content for us Blu Ray fans. God Bless mate!
Thanks for the update!...I picked up Freaks and Three Colors Trilogy (4K) in the flash sale. I'm curious what I will think of the new Colors 4K given the changes. Also, I would love to see Criterion do a blu ray or 4K of 'Spirit of the Beehive' and the 'Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood' box set. Both still only available on DVD here in US.
Surprised you didn't mention the new color grading for the Trainspotting release since it's been such a topic of debate. It's darker with a blue/green tint and apparently closer to Danny Boyle's vision and what was originally shown in theaters. But the brighter brown/pinkish grade seen on the DVD and Blu-ray releases is how many younger viewers (myself included) have always known the film. I actually think it looks good and creates an interesting contrast between tone and subject matter, and I can't remember seeing any discussion of Trainspotting's color grading prior to this announcement. It makes you ask: what is the "right" way for a film to look in situations like this?
I’m out of the loop on that. I didn’t even know a 4K version had been showing. I haven’t seen any comparisons yet but it wouldn’t surprise me that the colours have been changed. It’s a common occurrence these days!
I’m hoping that the John Sayles film gets a simultaneous UK release, as I don’t think there’s a current release available over here. Blood Simple is a great film, an excellent neo-noir, too. I have a blu of it so won’t be upgrading. I do wish that the Criterion UK releases had proper announcements and a proper showcase online. I have no idea what the upcoming releases are, at all, apart from After Hours. For such a big label, it’s really quite shocking the level of their communication about releases. I’d hoped for some improvement with the new arrangement coming into action, but it seems not. 😢
Just had my biggest Flash Sale haul yet including splurging on the Bergman boxset! Regarding Mudbound, it looks like it was taken from a 2K transfer which would be why it's only on regular Blu-Ray. I'm not sure however why such a new movie would only have a 2K transfer. Love your content!
I did well in the flash sale, because I had *almost* enough points for the $50 gift certificate. So I made one order to GET the points for the certificate, and then a second order to USE the certificate lol
Alright, you convinced me. I've never seen any of the films in the Apu Trilogy though they've been recommended to me before. I think it's time. Just pre-ordered the 4k set and I'll give them a try when they come out in a few months!
I am excited about this months release especially Trainspotting even though I am not sure how good it will look in 4k. I passed on the flash sale because the shipping was $9. 9 bucks to ship a single 4k! Ridiculous! I am waiting for November
I like your point about the money earned from 'Trainspotting' (and other recent, more mainstream releases like 'La Bamba' and 'Thelma & Louise') funding other projects and more niche releases. I have my fingers crossed this is Criterion's goal.
I already have the blu-ray set of Apu Trilogy so don't think I will upgrade, if reviews don't say its a huge difference. Same with Blood Simple. But Trainspotting is something I was very glad when I saw the announcement of! Love to get it in 4K! Mudbound is also really good so will get that as well!
I had the very good fortune to see the Apu Trilogy during its [restoration] theatrical run ... twice. There's no doubt it will use the restorations. In addition to having it shown natively (as opposed to downscaled to 1080 HD), I'm sure the added HDR will make the contrasts look spectacular in 4K. It will be the same deal as getting The Red Shoes =D
@@ElliotCoenI found that with the greater dynamic range, the contrasts look more natural and there are minimal issues like crushed blacks and the like. It also allows for a presentation that's much closer to how it was projected where you don't need to boost the brightness in order to make it register on screen (see reviews of another humanist and cinematic trilogy Three Colors =] ) But the Blu-ray is definitely a fine presentation and that's what I have had for eight years at this point. All that said, this will be a no-brainer for me =]
Oh God, that's such an excellent trilogy from Satyajit Ray. The guy is truly one of the greatest filmmakers ever. The Lifetime Achievement Oscar he received back in 1992 just wasn't enough for a man of his stature. Films like Pather Panchali, Aparajito, The Big City and The Goddess deserved some love from The Oscars.
Hey man any chance if you know what regions these new criterion’s are gonna be… aka is trainspotting gonna be playable in the uk cos I might have to start shooting up if it’s not
I was really hoping that Trainspotting 1 would get a 4K release, since Trainspotting 2 came out on 4K, so I wanted the first one with it. So I am very excited!
Really looking forward to Trainspotting. The bluray i have is terrible IMO. Trainspotting 2 looks awesome in 4k, i know the original isn't likely to look as good but hope its a big improvement on the bluray
Thanks, i will give it till early 2024, if not will just have to order the one i want from boutiguehomevideo or all- your - music both are around £30 , good that Blood Simple is coming soon, saw it years ago very very good film. Another one of theirs i liked that is not on 4k, No Country for Old Men, really good script, did not reckon Fargo too much when it was released .@@ElliotCoen
No, not these days, but I definitely had some snobby opinions years and years ago. I don’t look down on anyone for their film tastes now. Letting go of preconceptions has allowed me to discover so many films that I would have previously turned my nose up at. I have both Michael Bay and Andrei Tarkovsky in my top 100 films of all time!
i was never a big fan of trainspotting i already have the current bluray with no new features i think without a huge upgrade in picture quality i will pass i much rather see a 4k upgrade of shallow grave wich I like more
Criterion became very repetitive and lazy after entering the 4k market. They simply pick random titles and put in 4k. Who needs Apu Trilogy in 4k? At least, there's Akerman box.
Elliot, I recommend anyone considering buying the Jeanne Dielman disc to screen it first on the Criterion Channel, though I understand the service is not available outside U.S. I've watched it twice now on the channel, second viewing almost 3 years after first watch. After the second watch I dislike it even more. I kept reading how really good it is deep down, so I gave it another try. That's 6 hrs. I've wasted, lol. I'm open minded and love to watch art films, evident by my love for Criterion and many of their titles outside the mainstream. IMO Jeanne Dielman has major flaws just in the main story line, and so many unnecessary scenarios. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!.................................So Ms. Dielman is attractive, well educated relatively, dresses well, has amiable personality when interacting with people outside her apt, lives in a city with bustling retail shops, but the only way she can make a living is to become a prostitute in her home while her son is in school. Another SPOILER: Now this I find an absurd flaw in the script and story line, which is the excessively long single takes of her shining shoes, taking a bath, kneading raw meat, etc. I understand the base reasoning of the director's choice for the long takes, but too much is too much. I think the film may have been more tolerable if those scenes' length were cut in half, and maybe trimmed down to a 2 hr movie at max. That's all:)
Did you pick up any new Criterion Collection discs in the flash sale? Let me know in a comment!
Do you order straight from the criterion site? I was told by them they don’t ship to the uk
Dangit! When was the flash sale?
@@MyFireVideos Tuesday noon to Wednesday noon
Videodrome 4K (making this the third time getting it =] )
got the trail, walkabout, and la bamba during the sale yesterday

Is City of Hope being released?
@@pistachoone1958 No immediate plans that I know of, unfortunately.

I’m still waiting for an I’m Thinking Of Ending Things addition to the collection.
I'd love to hear an update on how your collection curation is going!
I’ll be doing some videos on curation very soon! Cheers

I went way overboard during the flash sale. 😆 Can't wait for the Akerman box set!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts pal. I'm very excited for Lone Star!
Cheers pal, it has me most excited too!
Glow in the Dark Trainspotting Packaging. That’s excellent design.
I’ll use it as a night light 💡
Can you imagine a 4k release of Hard Boiled and The Killer? I wish!
I’d love this to happen!
Nice that Criterion managed to get back the rights to Trainspotting

It's all over the place isn't it? Just comes across like they aren't bothered at all tbh
I added: Don't Look Now (4K), After Hours (4K), Uncut Gems (4K), Bigger Than Life (based on your recomm.), I Married A Witch (based on your recomm.)
Lone Star is a brilliant movie, only available second hand on dvd. So an upgrade to bluray is well deserved.

Walkabout 4k, Purple Noon, Shaft 4k, The Trial 4k and The Last Waltz 4k were my flash pick-ups.
Great choices there, enjoy them!
I’m hoping Second Sight release Walkabout in 4K in the UK, given that they already produced an outstanding blu-ray set a year or so back

I got Anatomy of a Murder, Tampopo and Five Easy Pieces. Ive never seen them before and I'm very excited

On a decent telly some things are absolutely fine on blu-ray still. Not everything needs a 4K upgrade (and I say this as a 4K evangelist)

It’s quite wild that Criterion have gone from “yeah we’re never releasing anything on 4K you idiots lol” to 90% of their monthly slates now being 4k
I picked up Eraserhead, Videodrome, Night of the Living Dead, and Cold war, what do you think!?
Got FREAKS and LA BAMBA in the flash sale. Next month I'll pick up THE TRIAL, LAST PICTURE SHOW and MEAN STREETS in B&N 50% off sale.
Nabbed Freaks and Still Walking after watching them the day of the sale. I've run out of non blind buys at this point🥴

Picked up Time Bandits 4K, Hiroshima mon amour Blu-ray, Citizen Kane 4k, After Hours 4K, Branded To Kill 4K, Petit maman Blu-ray
