Honda ST 1300 Pan -European, Dragging linked brake. SMC & Porportioning valve with lots of bleeding

- One thing after another, Could not be ridden due to everything the back brake was pressed it almost locked on. The only way to release it was to undo the bleed valve. The rest was ordering parts that were wrong for the bike and a long wait for the right bits to arrive. hope you enjoy and learn from my mistakes.
Hi. Tore everything apart. Everything looks good. Found the smc rusted shut. Worked it a long time, then just ordered another. You're video helped.

This problem is common on the Honda LBS system. Either the return orifice on the SMC gets plugged up with debris or the piston seal swells over time and blocks it. The solution is to clean and rebuild the SMC ( use a steel wire to unplug the bleed hole if necessary ) ( be careful with the plastic one way valve ) and bleed the system. To prevent this, keep the fluid clean. I change it every year. The same goes for the clutch slave cylinder; it is exposed to extreme heat constantly ( because of its location ), the fluid breaks down and oxidate eventually ruining the seal. Make it a habit to change the brake and hydraulic clutch fluid annually. My ST1300

Wow that's some mileage. Glad you have a fix that works, shame that it's a common fault and that Honda didn't come up with a more permanent fix. Ride safe

Hopefully the SMC replacement fixes your issue. Going through similar on a 2004 ST1300 with low mileage…. Wasn’t serviced often enough!
Replaced the SMC on mine and it made things loads better, was never as bad as yours, but noticeable that something was up. Good few weeks / months down the line it’s coming back again…. However also having slight binding on front at same time, which may be a rear master cylinder issue with blocked return port… as that can affect the linked front cylinders from rear pedal, given the state the innards of the SMC were in on mine I think some crap floating about may have got to where it shouldn’t have on mine. Ordered parts (use fowlers parts online to check part numbers for your year!) - some on back order but will be changing rear master cylinder on mine shortly. Will report back if that fixes, as if you still have issues after full bleed may be similar to mine.

I had the same problem with the rear brake binding on my 2004 model. Problem was the smc which I was able to buy new,without the bracket.
What sight you order it from
Haven't had this problem with my 2006 , but the secondary cylinder rod must be free , in one of the shots yours looked like the bolt through the rod fork end was binding against the outside of the fork it self ., if so this would apply the rear brake after a stop or two permanently ,until it got shaken or bumped loose.
