in Hawaii they are called Opihi. another Hawaiian delicacy consumed raw. they tend to populate in rough waters where its hard and very dangerous to harvest off the rocks where waves are crashing all around. consumed whenever its available. highly prized for special occasions. weddings, a baby's first birthday, any special celebration. The yellow variety is call Black Gold. highly prized. they can fetch, with shells on, $50-$60 a lb.
My brother and I had a little kit we would take down to the rocks. A squirt bottle full of clarified butter and squirt bottle full of chili oil and a small gas torch. Flip one over and hit him with butter and chili oil, then him with the torch. So yummy!!
I went to a fancy restaurant last night and a man was complaining about his escargot. The waiter just shrugged it off. "I'm sorry sir," the waiter told him. "All snails are final."
@@DestroBB Ahh I see, I've just looked it up and it's an expression used exclusively in the US. In the UK we would just say "Tea and biscuits oi oi bob mate"
We eat these here in Hawaii too. We call um opihi (oh-pee-hee) however most times the center point of the shell is sharp rather than smooth. Especially for the ones that libe near rough waters. Grilling them is very good but we eat them raw just like gordon ramsay did. Or marinated in kimchee base. They go for about $23.99/lb last I checked, the reason why the price is so high because it’s dangerous to harvest. Several people die yearly in an attempt to pry them off rocks.
I would not call a limped a sea snail. But I do not know the Scientific Name either. I harvested 25 at a time at Camp Pendleton boat basin over 20 years. I went at low tide to get them.

Soy sauce , hottest chili you can get mix over the grill 😍 you can eat and take a shot of that goodness all at once. A lil vinegar in the soy sauce mix works wonders as well. You can also use things like to basco
I love this series cause it's literally just Jacob popping into the ocean and grabbing whatever random sea life is there.... then eating it.
You basically just described my dating life in one sentence. Thank you.
Eater has filled the Bon Appetit sized hole in my heart.
Brad’s goofiness would be welcome in this series though
Thank you for highlighting the struggles of native abalone and showing the importance of sustainable harvesting!!!

You got me craving opihi now. Some chili pepper water and shoyu right off the grill.
Same. I loved putting them on the grill with shoyu and a dash of Sriracha.
Raw with tomato, shoyu and green onions works for me. And side rice.

Is purple sea urchin edible? I'd love to eat the predator that's eating the kelp.
