Is your Playstation 2 not reading discs anymore? The solution MIGHT be much easier and budget friendly than you might think. In this video, I’ll show you all the steps you’ll need to take to open up your Sony PS2, clean the laser lens, and put it all back together. On this particular console, it did the trick.
Optionally, you might also want to completely clean the DVD tray, console plastics, and discs. While you’re already in the console, it makes sense to give your newly-cleaned laser a nice clean house to live in and your disks a nice clean tray.
If cleaning the laser lens doesn’t get your games reading again, your DVD disc drive might need additional maintenance or repair, which exceeds the scope of this tutorial.
Finally, this only applies to the PS2 Phat model. The Slim can be cleaned also, but requires a different opening process, albeit a simpler one.

after suffering with slow loading games for well over a decade (and not playing any PS2 games as a result), thanks to this video, I've now got both my PS2s loading games properly again. Thank you! :)
I recommend cleaning AS MUCH of the system as possible to avoid further issues. Clean the bottom and top case, regrease the laser rails with white lithium grease, blow out the internals with compressed air, and make sure that EVERYTHING inside the drive assembly gets cleaned as well to avoid the issue from popping back up. Clean the fan and fan grate as well! If this doesn’t work, you can buy a brand new KHS-400C laser and install it, if your PS2 fat uses any laser other than a 400C, you can use a hacked memory card with FreeMcBoot installed, add a lens changer program to the card, and use it to reprogram your systems EEPROM to accept a 400C. Thanks for the video! I think if I cleaned the laser one time and it didn’t work I’d think it has to be broken and give up. Wouldn’t have thought to clean it more than once. Guess it matters!

I'll be honest, I had to look up the date of this video. It screams 2007-2009 LOL. Always glad to see more videos out there helping people with system issues. :)
A few tips I would mention:
1. Try to use a non fiber q-tip if possible.
2. There is another lens underneath the eye which often gets pretty dusty. Most people miss this as it's easy to miss. It's very narrow in there so you will need something pretty small like a flat q-tip.
3. Adjust the white cog a few clicks and test. Repeat until you find the sweet spot. Be sure to mark the original position so you can always go back to the default position. Once you find the sweet spot make sure both CD and DVD disc games work.
4. If that still doesn't work, you will need to adjust the pots on the bottom in VERY small increments. One is for CD and the other DVD. Highly recommend you use an oscilloscope or multi meter set to ohms to measure them. I forget the exact ohms you need to be at but I'm sure it's listed on the internet somewhere.
5. If nothing else works, you will need a new laser.
6. When putting the screws back on the bottom make sure to put the 4 smaller screws on the right side. I've learned the hard way that putting a long screw there will puncture the ribbon cable...
I always completely dissemble a PS2 system and wash the parts that can be washed. Yes it takes time, but as you said these system are 15-20 years old now and have never been cleaned out. That would be like driving a car for 20 years and never cleaning it. People don't think about it because dust is trapped inside and can't be seen.

Don't recommend using isopropyl alcohol, just use compressed air instead, works just fine. Small liquid drop underneath the lens might destroy it!

I can't get mine to load up games. UT takes 10 mins to load a disk then it loads the disk and starts to play but nothing after that.
My guess is a lot of people are fuckimg with the potentiometers inside the laser casing when either blowing/drying it or doing this while its connected to power.
