Went to Alaska for my 50th 16 years ago with my best friends and my Dad two of which, including my Dad, are gone. I'm so glad I did it. Making a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota this year with a bucket list stop at flaming Gorge in August with a great friend. Ive been wanting to fish the gorge for a long time.

Fishing at: lake cavanaugh, samish. Taking my kayaks on the Skykomish River down to the snohomish river and out to the Everett boat launch if there’s no obstruction and if it’s even possible. Brewster sockeye fishing after baker lake fishing. To own a business possibly fishing related. To have my first limit on Kokanee lol. And more so in the future, I’ll be adding on as I continue to accomplish these.

One item I checked off my bucket list was to go kayak fishing at Brewster pool and catch a Sockeye and Kokanee fishing at Lake Chelan. I did that last year and had an amazing time. Your videos and knowledge made this a reality for me and I thank you good sir. Now I am headed back this July to hopefully catch more and maybe even catch a glimpse of the local legend in action. Cheers and thanks for all you do.

Excellent advice! I have been retired 6 years and always wanted to bow hunt for elk for the entire season, from my camper or wall tent. So now I have done it several times and can tell you it is what I always dreamed it would be. Just a few months ago I was diagnosed with cancer and just completed 29 radiation treatments. Might not be able to hunt this fall but I can say that I have done it and it was epic.

Your video really resonated. I’ve been getting back into fishing the last couple of years and inching closer to retirement. Some of the family think I’m obsessed, but they support my passion even when I come home with more gear or disappear when most of the world is still sleeping warm in their beds. Thanks for doing your channel and keeping it real.

Thank you so much for your knowledge and dedication for fishing. If it wasn’t for you I would’ve never bought a pedal kayak and got my first kokanee out of it. Your insight to the sport had brought a lot of joy to my family! Keep it up!

    Invitation
    by Shel Silverstein
If you are a dreamer, come in.
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
    A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer,
If you’re a pretender, come, sit by my fire.
For we have many a flax golden tale to spin.
    Come in, come in.
Thank you Tyler. We can all dream, but sometimes it can be challenging to actualize. You show us how to plant some of those magic beans.
I can only imagine that Mike was pretty happy while he was working on his kayak dreams.

Wise words. I've been retired now for 3 years. Fished a fair amount into med school, but not since. Found your channel last year, and purchased an inflatable (from Sea Eagle) boat, got the gear and lures you've recommended, and have finally gotten back into fishing! I slowly got used to being on the water alone last summer so that I could go farther afield than Lake Washington (blocks from my house), and finally began hitting my bucket list destinations this week. First up was Chelan, but I got blown off the water shortly after launching. I'll have to try again. Next up is Roosevelt, American Lake and Lake Samish. Your videos are entertaining and informative. Thanks for teaching this old dog new tricks!

"Do me a favor" spoke directly to me. I have been following you for the last year and have learned so much, but have been putting off the opportunity. This last weekend, taking your advice, I put my kayak in the water for the first time this year. Fished Lake Chelan and had a blast. Lots of mishaps, but nothing serious. Was tangled with another powerboat with downriggers and got pulled backwards, thought I was going to get spooled, but was able to salvage enough line and collect some of my gear from the other boat later that morning. No hard feelings, but will definitely reign in the line when fishing in a crowd. I left the crowd and did a slow troll back to the state park. Was following your recommendations for the area near Wapato point and Manson. Got 2 doubles, all four got onboard after more trials. I was so excited about having a double, I wasn't paying attention to my direction and ended up doing at least one 360. Now the second line is wrapped around the prop and most likely the fish is a goner. I pulled the prop drive and retrieved my line. Hand lined 70' of line in, pulled the dropper weight and low and behold, the fish was still on. I landed him like your ice fishing videos through the center section of my kayak. I connected with another big double 30 minutes later in the same location as I continued to head west. Slow learner, but was able to keep the lines behind the boat. Used your recent favorites pink/purple hoochie and moon glow spinner. The fish are huge, 7 total.

I started watching your channel about two years ago. Because of your channel I actually bought a Hobie PA14 360 that I have built into a tournament ready kayak. I had been dreaming of owning this kayak for years. It has a Lowrance elite FS7 and a motorguide Xi3 GPS. I have fished out of it for the last two years and I love it.
As far as bucket list trips go… I have knocked out 3 of those in the last year. Caught my first 8’ Columbia White Sturgeon (guided trip), Went trophy Walleye fishing on the Columbia in March and was fortunate enough to get three 30” fish, and in April I fished for trophy smallmouth on Dworshak and was blessed with an 8.25lbs fish.
I have been working my entire life so far saving money for the end when it dawned on me one day that I would be old with a pile of cash and maybe too old to enjoy my passion for fishing the way I would like.
I love the kayak but I wanted more so I purchased a new Crestliner and tricked it out the way I always wanted one. I have multiple Columbia River trips on the books this year and I have never been happier. Thanks for the motivation. I truly appreciate your videos. I have learned many walleye techniques that have helped me greatly.
I’m looking to sell the Hobie if you have any ideas on where the best secondary market is for that. I just haven’t used it since I purchased the boat. Thank you again! Here’s to 100 fish days

Wanted to thank you Tyler for taking time out to create this video. It is "fitting", unfortunately for so many people out there. And to a certain degree myself included. I have recently retired at age 62 from owning and operating a bar in town. I just couldn't leave the place to anyone for any amount of days for fear of it not being managed as I expect for my customers. I envied the people that I visited with in my bar that were going out on their weekends to camp & fish. COVID hit, and it was extremely hard to find employees available to bartend which forced me to sell out and retire. I personally have some physical issues with my back and could not do that job task for any length of time myself. Now that I'm retired I have made it a point to start enjoying my leisure times. This Spring, I made that part of my life a priority as I realize none of us are going to outlive our hobbies and dreams. I live in Montana and winter is a "clinger" (it actually snowed this morning and stuck - Butte Montana) I have already fished Lake Pend Orielle and Coeur d'Alene in Idaho and several trips to the Missouri river near Helena MT at Hauser Lake and just got back 2 days ago from a fishing trip in Eureka MT (NW area) at Lake Koocanusa targeting larger Kamloop Trout. I mainly fish for Rainbows and Kokanee in these lakes although target land locked Chinook Salmon in CDA lake. I've enjoyed being able to enjoy more days on the water already this year and won't look back this Fall regretting that I didn't get my boat out trolling more. Thank you again for this video which I am sending the link to my brother and a good friend of mine that always find other things to do and never get their boats out. I am heading out tomorrow morning to fish the Madison River near West Yellowstone Montana for some bank fishing action with a fishing buddy.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to walk away from my factory job working 60-70 hours a week at 21 years old. I saw myself going down that same path, and i decided that there was too much to get out and do, to just work my life away. Yeah sure im not going to have the best financial future for myself, but at the rate our country is going, I figure im going to have to work until i die anyway. so i decided to use my youth to go out and gain life experiences instead of building up my 401k. I would say my biggest bucket list trip would be Anderson Ranch for a chance at a 20+inch kokanee, or to even try and catch kings on the columbia. What you did for mike was awesome, im so happy i stumbled upon your channel because I love supporting good people out in this dark world.
    RIP Mike

I enjoyed your remarks about bucket list items not having to be a crazy adventure on the other side of the planet. Grand plans like that can seem overwhelming and out of reach, and then it makes it easy to just choose to do nothing at all. There are definitely ways to have immensely enjoyable and memorable adventures within your own county, state, or region. Enjoyed the video, thanks.

I grew up commercial fishing the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands-some of the most beautiful and rugged country in the world. I also believe that area represents one of the last truly wild, unspoiled sport fishing opportunities anywhere. All those summers from ages 9-22 when I worked as a deckhand for my dad, I daydreamed about returning to the Aleutians for a sport fishing adventure. I would love to take a boat out there for a few weeks and explore the islands in pursuit of giant halibut, cod, rockfish, lingcod, and salmon, along with backpacking excursions up to the many trout, steelhead, and salmon streams in the region-many of which have seldom if ever been fished!! So that would be my ultimate bucket list trip…definitely a tougher one to pull off but someday I’m going to make it happen! 👍🏻 thank you for the inspiration!

Put on my bucket list by a good friend - get a float tube and fly fish. I was hesitant (I am good at tying wind knots). I got the tube and have been out a couple of times, even catching some trout. I already have a Pro 14 (it is a bit of a pig, but I go with it) and need to get out more often in it. Other items on the list - catching kokanee by trolling (I have caught them jigging), and doing some bank fishing near the mouth of some rivers for bottom fish. Recently completed: caught my first large mouth and several nice small mouth bass; and have caught crappie on ultralight gear. And I am in my late 70's.

Great video! I want to take my 20 ft. PRO-V over the bar and fish near shore for bottom fish and Coho. Need a vhf radio and a flare-gun kit, then give it a go. Might start with Newport, OR as that is a pretty safe crossing from what I hear. I figure if you can do it in a Kayak, I can do it in my boat. I also need to learn how to pick the right days based upon wind, swell, etc.

I am about your age and have pushed hard to live my bucket list all my life. I have always prioritized adventure, relationships, and grand experiences, and as you say it is not that difficult to still make room for the rest of a full, happy life with your family, your partner, your community, and yourself. This year, I finally moved off the bank and onto the water here in Idaho with a small inflatable and I am loving it - just in the past three days I have caught salmon on the Clearwater River, my personal best bass in Dworshak Reservoir, and nearly limited out on kokanee on the day after on the same trip (22 fish). It takes a lot of energy, but it is so rewarding to get out and spend time outside and follow through with challenging goals and experiences. One thing I have not done yet is make my way up to Alaska and fish with my uncle, who has lived and fished around Anchorage for 30 years. Today's message struck a chord with me, and I'm going to make my way up there by the end of the year. I'm shooting for August - thank you for the video.

You are so right about not putting off what you can do. I took a fall, with complications in the hospital in 2020 and now I use a rolling walker to get around. The walker limits where and how I fish. No more getting in boats. I need a fairly smooth approach to the water. The reason I fell had to do with how far I had let my body go. I really does pay to keep in good physical condition so you can enjoy retirement.

I hear you. Lots of us older guys that used to fish A LOT don't get out there like we used to. But we do think about it, maybe dream about it, maybe even plan to do it, but sometimes we put it on the back burner. I used to fish a lot, I was all over Moses Lake and Potholes but haven't been there in several years now. When I was in my 30's, probably like you are now, I was fishing all over the place. But then I move to the big city (Seattle) got a job that tied me down and a new wife that found other things for me to do than fish. I used to fish alone a lot, just like you do, but now it is harder to get away and the wife is sick a lot and I have to look after her. My best friend had a triple bypass heart surgery and he keeps saying he wants to go throw some flies out there but he drags his feet even more than me. But I am for sure going to get out there soon. Below is my bucket list.

Yes, life is short. I see in my own family people that are dreamers, but never actually go out and do things. They spend the time to gain knowledge about what they want to do. They spend the bucks on equipment. Then they don't get out. It is sad.
Our lives are shorter than we even plan for. I have lost a lot of my time to do bucket list activities due to ill in-laws that require care, but are stuborn and don't want outside care.
I am in the process of changing my "bucket list" activities to fit caring for relatives in.
When I compare myself to others my age I'm very active, and relativly healthy. They go hand in hand. If you stay physically active, better health comes along. Gives you more years to enjoy.
My NEW bucket list is to learn a new fishery close to the in-laws I'm helping. They are close to coastal streams. I'm one of those old guys too. Retired for 8 years. So I want to try and catch a Blue Back that I caught with my Dad as a youth. Fish the tidal waters for Salmon. Learn where I can drop a crab pot, without going out in the ocean.
My key is to always be doing something. Another example is I put a garden in at the in-laws. Gives me something to do while care duties aren't taking my time.

Had the great privilege of hunting with Dwight Schuh back in the 80's and early 90's. One trip was 18 days in the Church Wilderness for Bighorn Sheep. We always remained friends, but didn't do much together for a long time due to various reasons. Maybe five or six years ago now, we both started talking about boats and fishing. I think because of feeling the years stacking up! Unfortunately Dwight passed away, before most of those fishing dreams became a reality, but if anybody has ever lived his dream as a hunter, it was Dwight. Sadly the fishing dreams came up short in the end. Really thankful for your channel. I have a long way to go, but thankful for the education you have willingly shared that helped me catch my first Kokanee last year, and to be back on the water doing it again as early as Feb. 21 this year. Lovin it! My bucket list? Just the next trip up on the water, and sharing the experience with my kids and grandkids as long as possible.

Great ask Tyler. My dearly departed Grandma once said (actually more than once): "If there's something you want to do, do it now." My bucket list trip is to Flaming Gorge reservoir. For the fish, certainly, but also to visit states I've yet to see. My bucket list is simple - catch the local saltwater sport species from my own boat. So far, knocked off lingcod, coho and pink salmon. Want to get a chinook and halibut still. I'm still learning all this stuff and it took me two seasons to get my first salmon on the deck. Wish I had more time but only get on the water a handful of times a year. Work, kids, skill level (weather).

I've seen a few of your vids strawberry res in Utah. I'm near to there, so I've watched those videos with great interest. GF has had health issues for the last 2years that have made trips hard. She recently picked up a travel trailer so I think it'd be fun to do trips in the trailer, but I'm still working out how they could go together. I've got an Old Town 132bigwater. Her trailer is a 27' trailer, I'm just not sure if the kayak could even fit through the door though lol. Maybe a roof rig?? idk. In retrospect, the 120 may have been a better choice for me, but I may choose to get one of those in case any friends/family would like to go fishing. I appreciate the challenge and this is to hold me to account as well

I just splurged on tix to go see him for the second half of June. Can’t wait to hang out with him and see the man he’s turning into. And we both want to catch a barramundi together. Working to make it happen! Have always wanted to go to that area since I was his age, but I was far more timid and less self assured than I see him to be. Sad, but unfortunately common. Thank you for the reminder and encouragement. I have two bucket list items. 1. Start a non profit to share fishing, wilderness skills and God with youth and struggling adults. 2. Alaska King Salmon with my dad.
I’ve started on 1, changed careers, bought the boat, started a little lure company with my kids that will support the charity, put together a business plan for the non profit, got my 25 ton merchant mariner credential, and already started working with a local veterans group. Just need to nail down one more board member to launch officially.
#2 has been on hold as my dad recently got both knees replaced, and finances are tight as I pour money into the non profit start up, but I hope to make it happen within the next couple years once the charity stops being a drain on my finances.

Yeah, it’s definitely hard. Sometimes you get stuck in a rut. I’m 43 years old now and I go fishing quite a bit and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ran into older gentleman hanging out at the boat launches just watching everybody come in and out asking how the fishing was. so one day I came up to one of the guys and asked him if he’d like to go out fishing was one of the best choices I ever made. I’ve done this a few times now, nothing more rewarding than being able to take someone fishing that may have never got the opportunity again if I never asked them to come fishing. I do this because I know one day I will be that old man at the dock.

Everyone has their dream trips, and I am no different. From Salmon and Halibut in Alaska to a safari in Africa. Or possibly a month long hunting trip to Argentina where the "wild west frontier" still exists followed by a mythical 90lb "hog" Chinook in Chile.
Unfortunately these experiences are realistically out of reach to all but the independently wealthy and my true dream is to build a life I don't need a vacation from.
Like many others, my passion for fishing has outgrown repeated morning trips to the local lake for stringers of stocked fish. My bucket list is to build a repertoire of "repeatable experiences" that I can share with friends, loved ones, and new generations of sportsmen.
The PNW is home to amazing fisheries that are in reach of even the most spartan of budgets. My ideal existence is to live a reality where I can go on 6-7 weekend overnight trips annually to visit these world class fisheries most would be envious of. The fact that these places are close enough for the repeated trips necessary to gain the experience required to be realistically successful is the glue that holds this dream together.
Even the largest buildings are built one small brick at a time. So in the meantime I am going to just keep stacking... 6:59

I wholeheartedly agree, you never know how life might T-Bone you outta the blue. Get out there!!
I've kayak-fished and bowhunted for years, but 2022 I got a cancer diagnosis, stage 2B. I don't smoke, drink, consume sugar, and I'm usually in keto/low carb. Never been overweight. 38F, not the usual 60+ for this kind of problem. 18 months of exhaustive therapies and all manner of hellish side effects, but during the fall last year, man I was still exhausted weak, and dizzy (and probably still radioactive, lol) but I got out there with my bow and felled a nice chunky doe. Ground blind at 15y, I couldn't climb trees like usual. I periodically snuck in some brief kayak fishing too. I drove home SO PROUD with my deer and I was dog tired, but I dragged it onto my coffee table and cleaned the meat between lots of naps. Loaded into tupperware bins into the fridge and had some help grinding it the next day w/ some pork belly. I had more therapies to undergo after that, but gosh I can't describe the joy of opening the freezer and seeing my deer burgers, smoked kokanee and smallmouth I'd earned during the hardest trial of my life.
That's all done with, I just got a clean scan two weeks ago (May/24). Anyways I worked out this spring to build back lost muscle mass, and currently cleaning up my kayak this week to start deploying around Memorial weekend. The rod holders & stowage turn into spider condos over winter, lol. I have two gill-looking scars from surgeries, angled down my ribs. I'm going to get them literally tattooed into gills and have some scales running down the side. It's gonna rock.
Anyways yeah, fish smarter, fill the larder!
