    Here in Hawaii. COLA is going down by hundreds. The reason? It is based on cost of living in the continental US. They do this as prices continue to rise here in Hawaii. A quick comparison: $10 for a Wendys 4 for $5 on mainland. They increase BAH, but living in on base housing is 100% of your BAH. When it goes up... You see none of it living in base housing. Families see none of it.
    Ultimately, its not enough. And by the militarys logic we should refuse to live in base housing to see a pay increase that matters.. Living in Hawaii is getting cheaper and we should be poorer cause mainland is more expensive. We will continue to bleed service members to more competitive salary jobs... If not also $20 minimum wage hikes to flip burgers.
    41,000 future leaders short on recruitment this year alone. Smallest force since before WW2. They not only can do more, but they need to do more.

    Love your videos
    Some things to factor in:
    1. All BAH/BAS related income is not taxed, so if it was increase with inflation it would be outpacing inflation in real terms.
    2. For SMs who live on post, housing costs have been a large portion of inflation related price increases. We are unaffected by this.
    This is why I think they are right to keep our figure below the inflation number.
    Where the military really gets it wrong IMO is region to region cost of living adjustments.

    E6 w/ DEPNs; lost $54, doesnt seem like much but it feels like a slap in the face. “Hey heres more base rate, but we took some from your housing allowance~” 🤷🏻
    With regards to career management, I’ve been asking a lot more questions about the opportunity to pursue OCS, or branch into a warrant billet that correlates with my MOS. I think in full transparency, there are a vast majority of us that could better our situation by paying off debt, but thats also where I feel the fullest extent of inflation. My purchasing power has decreased and because more of my dollars have to go elsewhere my ability to formulate any kind of “aggressive” payoff strategy is curbed. While we have a really good plan in place (and are practicing it) going from Enlisted to O1-E would do so much for us. I would shoulder more workload to get financially ahead for sure!

    A few years ago I came across a book that I had bought when I was in the USAF (1977 - 1981) I came in as a Airman first class not airman basic. In that book I found a pay stub that I had used as a book marker. It said 175.00. I was paid a whopping 350.00 per month. Now that didn't include that I lived on base in the barracks and ate at the mess hall. I had no real expenses to consider. So that was 350.00 that I put in the bank and I did. I didn't spend it. In my 4 years I went through 2 congress lead pay hikes that meant for a few weeks we didn't get paid because congress couldn't figure out what to pay us. Raise no raise and I remember my supervisor saying just go ahead and continue as usual and we will get paid eventually. My father was enlisted from 1950 - 1971. As a family of four I didn't know at the time but we struggled, Mind you we did live in base housing and the base commissary was priced to fit the lower pay of ALL military personnel, unlike today where the difference between base com and off base grocery stores has disappeared. My single dad slept in canvas tents to start then moved to "Woodies" before going to a brick duplex home with a family. My first barracks was a "Woodie" before moving to a brick Dorm/admin office then to a really nice 1000 man dorm, then a PCA put me back in a brick dorm. This is all to say if you are in the military you will never make what your counterpart on the outside will and could make. But that's not why you joined the military now is it. You didn't want to become a millionaire did you, nope you want to serve and defend your country. So will the US Government EVER respect you for that choice? Ask a veteran, if you are a civilian you will probably get a laugh or at least an eye roll maybe a short lecture. If you are in the military you will get a pat on the back and a deep felt well done because we know what you are and will go through. The best I can give you is a Carry On Ma'am or Mister and thank you for your service. I will also pray that you have a long and happy career. May God Bless you and keep watch over you.

    That sounds okay on paper until you realize this pay increase doesn't offset the inflation over the past three years. It isn't that bad if you are a barracks soldier with no benefits, debts, pricey lifestyles, or outstanding expenses. Basically, if you live in a vacuum from the wider society, you will benefit from this. In the early 1980s, military pay went up over 10% for three years straight. "Okay, a ~12% pay increase over three years. Big deal." No, a minimum of a 10% pay increase three times for three years in a row! That wasn't even because of inflation or the economy. That was them just trying to get the recruitment numbers up from the post-Vietnam War.
    As far as E vs O pay, it is mostly that Es get things like the clothing allowance that barely covers the cost of a couple new sets of uniforms and a pair of boots. If we're actually going to give people an allowance, it should be calculated to actually cover the expenses. Or give out coveralls to more people who would be out getting dirty. Maybe even get field uniforms for combat MOSs that are just going to get dirty. "Just wear some ratty OCPs." That's okay until someone has to go to a school and they expect you to have all new, perfectly serviceable uniforms that you know will get trashed in two months. Have CIF issue out field uniforms for the guys that we know will get dirty and disgusting.
    I also wish the Army had a program where if you are living in substandard housing, you are reimbursed with partial BAH by the Army and not your unit. Because if guys are going to just get thrown wherever there is "space" and "fuck it", they should be compensated for it.

    @anonymousm9113 5 місяців тому +1

    There aren't a whole lot of E-1s, all things considered, but that paygrade needs to be updated. Under four months in and you get reduced pay. I understand the historical reasoning--to cover initial training--but a lot of people are able to enlist at E-2. I joined as an E-1 with $964/month base pay, and when I reported for recruiting duty in '08, I had the philosophy that everyone should enlist as an E-1. That mindset changed quickly, and as a Future Soldier Leader, I started trying to get everyone to at least E-2 before they shipped.
    The pay increases no longer affect me. I got my 3.2% COLA for retirement and disability, which amounts to roughly $200/month combined. That's decent, but while I used to struggle to spend $100 a Walmart only a few years ago, I rarely get out for under $150 nowadays. I'm sitting on a futon I paid $198 for, which is the exact same as those I bought in 2012 for $100 and in 2016 for $120.
    As for the enlisted/officer pay differential, I think there could be some modifications, especially for retirement pay. Naturally, as a retired NCO, I'm biased, but a quick check of the Military.com pay calculator for 2024 shows an E-9 with over 30 years getting just shy of $9k/month, while an O-6 over 30 years gets over $14k and an O-5 over 24 makes nearly $11.5k. Those are common paygrades for someone who commits to that long of a career, but for more insight into the disparity, consider two common 20-year retirement grades: E-6 and O-4. An E-6 at 20 years makes $4856/month, while an O-4 with the same amount of time in makes roughly twice that.
    I'm not saying that a mediocre barely-made-it-to-retirement SSG deserves to be paid the same as an outstanding MAJ who was a SFC in 75th RGR before going through OCS and commissioning. But the flip side is that a highly successful nominative (general officer-level) CSM is going to cap out at under $10k with 40 years of service, while that MAJ is making only $200 less per month at 20 years.

    The military pay gap between officers and enlisted personnel exists due to differences in responsibilities, qualifications, and career paths. Officers usually have higher education levels, greater responsibilities, and specialized skills, warranting higher pay. Enlisted members, while essential, typically have less formal education and take on different roles within the military hierarchy. The pay structure reflects these distinctions to ensure a fair and equitable compensation system based on rank and responsibilities. Literally no different than any other business or organization when it comes to workers and management….

    • @Flowmada
      @Flowmada 6 місяців тому +8

      True to an extent. I have a Sailor under me with a Masters and was in a class with someone that had a PhD in CompSci as an enlisted Sailor. When your enlisted job can start you at $220k in the civilian world - your skills are more valuable than the enlisted pay to an even larger degree so it makes less sense. If you spend time with the Aussie and Royal Navy Sailors, they are often surprised there is such a gap in pay and that US Sailors sleep 3 to 4 high instead of having more suitable quarters. The pay charts make sense for a lot of jobs until you get to the intel, electronic, cyber, and medically certified enlisted folks. The issue is that we have regular special pays for people that fly, deploy, parachute, dive, etc. But they have not implemented many special pays for job skills outside pilots, physicians, nuclear officers, etc. Today its very common for people to come in educated. It's more about whether you want to do cool things for a while and then sit at a desk while making higher level leadership decisions, or do you want to do your job as long as possible and simply advise your immediate leadership without worrying about the high level COCOM/TYCOM unless you go staff. It's a new kind of world and the military pay charts have not taken it into account. O-6s don't want to leave cause the pay is too generous while E-5 and below are competitive with fast food worker compensation outside of BAH. I think we need to decrease the O6 and above by 10% and increase the pay of our E6 and below by 10%. It would be interesting to see the accounting as to whether we'd save money, break even, or lose money.

    That pay bump was identical for us federal employees and when you also add the VA Service Connection increase (depending on your rating) you’ll get a very good pay bump overall. I’m sitting as a GS11 (Oakland) and 90% SC. I got a good bump for sure. When the economy is improving as rates go down, the government has more money to spend on issues like pay for military and civil servants. It’s a sign of an improving economy despite what the pundits tell you. Also, your TSP’s should be rising, unless your investing heavily in the international stocks or funds, those fluctuate not often.

      @@AssfaultRodefor some and when you factor in veteran status and gs pay combined (for some of us), it’s a good pay bump. I can’t say that the local economy will have a positive or negative impact on the pay increase, but this is still higher than previous years. I live in a high locality rated area, so to your point, things are expensive here but the bump helps alleviate that pressure, plus, adding my tax free service connection pay (with a pay bump as well), gives me a better outlook financially for the year. Also, living within your means definitely helps grow your financial portfolio.

    I think the pay gap is appropriate given the (relatively) different scope of jobs and responsibilities, although honestly considering how things have been inflation wise the last few years this raise isn't going to help enlisted folks enough imo, more of them are probably still playing catch up so it's less useful (although certainly welcome) than some ppl make it out to be, kinda like what you said about already being underpaid for the last few years. But never say no to free money I guess.
    Loving the videos sir! Would love to see more of your takes on enlisted/officer relations, I get the feeling since you've been in both worlds you've got some pretty good advice on that! Stay safe!

    No, and how do they think they are going to Keep Soldiers in at this pay when a deadly war kicks off with China and Russia? There are no incentives. Here go die for your country....or get paid 21 bucks an hour at UPS.
    My other favorite is there is 0 benefit to staying past 20 years. If I am mid career I get a bonus for staying longer, but if I am at 20 years the incentive to take 50% pay for FREE and get out makes much more sense than staying in. Why not offer those in good physical shape, who score well on ACFT an incentive to stay another 5 or 10 years.

    It’s hard to believe the general inflation numbers being broadcasted because common sense and experience tells it doesn’t seem too accurate. I know you said it’s not just gas or groceries but you go to the pump and gas still costs over 2x is did a few years ago ago and eggs and beef are still over 2x what they were a few years ago. And I’m not even going to mention trying to afford a house… Real life tells us these single digit inflation numbers are really damn near 50%. It’s wild!

Having also been a police officer the push in areas like wa state the norm is 5 to 10% pay increases yearly depending on the economy. Heck come out right now as a specialist and if you get through the process I can have you making 125k after just three years with medical and retirement. Also the new retirement system is horrible for the military. If you are going to pony up your own money and risk it then might as well leave the military

Riggers don’t wanna work late to hang up some chutes ok call up some 11-bs to run a 24 hour detail. “Officers/Senior Enlisted do more work” yeah my ass. I'm also stuck in a crappy point because I'm 12 years in and I wanna find another job outside of the military but I don't wanna let 12 years go to waste. You mentioned the pay gap. I believe it is nessassary. Officers have a larger scope of responsibility than enlisted members (typically).
    However, I believe that to assist enlisted service members, the Army should implement an education based incentive pay.
    For example; enlisted with an Associates receive an additional $200 a month, a Bachelors receives 400, and a masters gets 600. Idk, just something id like to see.
    Maybe add something for soldiers who gsin certifications that relate to or are similar to their jobs as well.

      Should there be a pay gap between officers and enlisted? Absolutely! I’m not sure why people are arguing as though anyone disagrees. But an E-4 should be making a minimum of 40k annually as base pay. The sacrifices they’re making and the shit they have to go through should be more adequately compensated. I’d have no issue with officers getting the same 20k bump.
