  • Looks like the 19.5% pay raise for junior enlisted troops probably won't happen now... I think the culture wars between the House and Senate may be stifling progress. It looks like there are attempts to cuts abortion, LGBTQ+, and diversity programs as well. I'll keep you guys updated as this continues to roll out.

They wouldn't notice it because they've exempted themselves from other laws that we would go to federal prison for like insider trading for example. They sit on committees, they write the legislation that affect the markets, and then they or their immediate family members go and either buy or sell stocks based on the legislation they just helped to write and profit off of it. Anybody that still thinks these asshats are in the business of politics for anything other than their own personal gain is a fool.

That'd be great for senior, well established and married service members, but I don't think it'd do much for the junior enlisted. How much are they paying really after the refund comes through? I make way more than what I did as a junior soldier, pay $30k+ in federal withholdings and get back roughly the same amount I did as an e-3.

@bryanknight1056 You are right. Would certainly add some incentives for NCOs at re-enlistment for sure. The 20% for the JE's one way or the other isn't a game changer. The main thing that came to my mind is 1) Congress doesn't have to spend money to solve a problem, that's not how we as their constituents solve problems but we are the ones who end up paying for it. 2) If they really wanted to do it, they'd find the $. 3) They'd rather use it as a fulcrum for other negotiations and re-message the non-result as a positive than solve an issue they can re-visit when they are up for re-election.

As for car consumables, when you see rare sales on filters, oil, and other fluids at a part store with a deep discount,go for them because in these times you never know when you need them and the store could suffer from a supply shortage. As for Ukraine, you do know most of the Ammo and Weapons that get sent over, are ammo that near expiring and would have to destroyed at cost, along with cost of replacement to replenish the Stock on hand. As for the weapons most of them were built in the 80's and 90's and have come to cost effectiveness of upgrading, so some of the money is to purchase replacement for that too. This will allow newer equipment that being used now, can be place in Stock to replace that equipment. Just saying.

One issue that politicians seem to always ignore is how much we overpay for military contracts. Every day, I walk into the office and see a handful of contractors who will do nothing but doom scroll reddit all day. Not because they are lazy, but because somebody drastically overestimated how many extra hands we would need for the workload. If we get rid of some of these unnecessary contracts and just stop overpaying for shit, we could easily afford pay raises for these younger soldiers. The other glaring issue is the yearly september spending spree every unit goes through so they can spend the entirety of the budget and get the next fiscal year's budget reduced. Spending on the stupidest things because they can't think of useful things to spend money on. Plenty of places to cut so Soldiers can have better living conditions and wages.

I'll second this. I worked as a contractor after my time. Everything I did was by appointment only, and if we didn't have an appointment we really didn't have any duties. So we would watch netflix for 8 hours and make nearly $30 an hour.
The only down side to being a contractor is that the contract can go away at a moment's notice and then you're out of a job.

The rent for a small basement apartment was $110. We were defiantly living below the poverty level. The thing that saved us was my part-time job as a motorcycle mechanic. Although health care was supposed to be available, there was not much for an E3 and his family. For instance there was almost no pre-natal help for my wife while she was pregnant with our son. I sure hope they now treat the low ranking members with more respect.

Hello Brother. (Spent nine years in; abn, air ass, jumpmaster, ranger school grad; I was in the right place at the right time to have been fortunate enough to complete some amazing schools, go to unique places, and serve with even better soldiers). But I have to say; no pay raise allowing soldiers to keep up with this crazy economy, hearing that soldiers are on food stamps, “your” recent video on the new Draft Bill and its confusion, understanding and preventing solider suicides still not addressed, and all of the services continuing to miss recruitment goals,…I would find it very hard to serve to this country again. I went in just before Desert Shield/Desert Storm and at that time there wasn’t the patriotism (WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc) on display with vets wearing hats and shirts that many people have seen over the last 30 years in those years after the Vietnam Pull-Out leading up to 1991. At that time no one was announcing their service, it was a very different time and I remember it clearly - you had to want it serve and people would look at you funny (example; “why are you wearing that uniform on campus). No Vietnam Vets were announcing their service - these men were spit on when they returned from Vietnam and it wasn’t until the soldiers came back from Desert Storm that they came out. It’s a shame and I think this country is headed back in that direction following the Afghan Pull-Out. I am not surprised all of the services are having severe recruitment issues,…and now the soldiers are leaving. I don’t think this is going to get better for our soldiers.

100% agree. I was in the National Guard all 14 years I was in so I didn't really understand the pay problem for Soldiers at home station because when I was activated I would receive my military pay and my work pay for the first 6mths or longer just depending on the company I was working for at the time. It wasn't until I was a mission to Germany to cover down on a unit there and we were doing left seat right seat when I was speaking with a E3 with a wife and 2 kids living off post and he told me he was on government assistance. It blew my mind and I started sending all kinda questions their way. At first I thought it was because Germany had a different social safety net system but I was told they also get these services back at home in the states. I completely lost my shit once I understood how much was coming in and how much still needed to go out. I realized how spoiled I was only being active for tax free deployments with hazard duty and other type of special pay on top plus a few months of salary from my job. On top of that I was single with no kids. Ever since that mission I have always advocated for my lower enlisted and really shaped how I lead w/ a focus on trying to ensure we did everything we could as a unit to take care of their needs so they could take care of the mission. When we have units trying to find places to spend money at the end of the FY just to make sure they get allocated the same or more next year and that's seen as a good thing vs supporting and praising units that find ways to get more done with less withing regulation it really bothers me.

I'm not disappointed. I'm angry. This is ludicrous! We pay out to tyrants while we snub the soliders who sacrifice their lives. I count my blessings with what benefits I get, but what's keeping them from cutting me and my brothers and sisters off when it becomes "inconvenient"?

The real waste of military money is to be found in experiments and development of useless hypertanks, hyperartileery and so forth. R&D won't be touched though, there's corporate interest. You know where this is going.

My daughter is an E4 in Hawaii, it infuriates me that we're housing and feeding 9 million illegals when we barely take care of our soldiers. If she had kids she absolutely would have to use SNAP.

I was considering enlisting at 35 in the navy, but I may not, having second thoughts. This didn't help.

I enlisted in the Navy in 2001 at age 35. My basic training unit was all people that age up to 40. Everyone else called us the Geritol unit 😅 Retired at 55, couldn't take it one more month. Also I refused the covid vaccine

Senate is only trying to match inflation. House is trying to exceed inflation rate. While we push billions over seas to take care of other countries instead of helping soldiers. We need to pull money from senate members and the house to take care of soldiers

I say that these lgbtq+ programs simply have zero place in the military BECAUSE there are medical consequences with such operations that, normally don't mean much, but when it comes to the military, they absolutely mean A LOT... I mean if a slight difference, in how the heart beats, between naturally born men, and naturally born women, has such a HUGE impact on weapon accuracy, but is such a big negative in everything else, to the point that women are by far, best used as snipers when it comes to combat, I'm certain that these medical operations will have a impact on combat efficiency, and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's probably not going to be a very desirable impact for the military.
I think that money would absolutely be better spent in the pockets of our armed forces members.

Just looking at the base pay situation, i don't think a ~19% increase to lower enlisted fixes any problems. All that would do is bring the base pay of an e4 above an E5 and 2% under an e6 using the current post chart (capping at the 6yr mark). That would mean for the first 6 pay ranks, you would only have very low difference i in pay. I think a bigger help would be more across the board pay raises, rank based discount systems on post (lower enlisted get bigger discounts on post), and creating a different tax table for military personnel while they serve so that less money is taken out of their check. Then, extend that to property taxes, and if you do 20 years, then you don't have to pay property taxes regardless of your va disability rating. Realistically, pay raises are bandaids to problems, persisting benefits based on service will retain and motivate more ppl to serve in the military.

5.5% really doesn’t even keep up with inflation over the past few years, even with the COLAs already received. This is not a raise at all
