    so does the remaining A x Atrans = I as well? seems to simplify everything

      No, since A is of mxn dimensions, only ATA simplifies to the identity matrix. If you were to examine AAT, you would see that it indeed does not simplify to the identify matrix, leaving us the projector.

    there's a mistake, the projection matrix is A*(A_trans*A)^-1*A_trans
