People worry too much about bags and how "slow" they make you. If you need to carry more than you can in your pockets, get a bag, if you need to carry even more, get a second or a larger bag. If you go on a short race and don't need food, tools, or spares, don't use bags. Also, don't forget that bonking because you couldn't carry enough food, or having a DNF because you don't have a tool you need are far slower than losing a few watts in aero drag from a bag.
I put things I only need when off the bike in a saddle bag. Anything I can use while pedaling goes in a bar bag or rigid frame bag just behind the steerer tube.
Thank you for the video! I definitely recommend good bags and a heavy backpack.. wide tires with nice low pressure.. I have even a small chance to be faster than someone.. with 6 kg Aero tt bike 😂

Cyclite has just introduced fully aero bar bags that attach to your aerobars. They work as a fairing, even when you have a big handlebar roll behind it. And Specialized actually had prototypes of road bike front fairings that reduced the aero coefficient quite drastically, but then UCI intervened and that was the end of the story.

It's true that handling is affected a little, but it's not bad at all imo. Still, the bar bag should be the last place where you add a bag after all the other spots (frame inside, top tube, seat post) are already filled with stuff and you still need more carrying capacity. What a coincidence to do exactly the same wind tunnel tests as Dylan Johnson did just a couple of weeks ago also on a gravel bike while preparing for Unbound. It's good that the tests had the same results. :)
For a normal cyclist, how less aero is the rider - semi-upright riding on the hoods, non-racing-snake build - surely we present a larger frontal surface area (admittedly after the air has diverted around a bar bag)….

Hi Guys, the aero chat is just the sort of thing we need more of. Talking of bar bags and numbers, if you attach the number to the bag, they share the penalties so you get one instead of two. I wonder if a top tube bag or box would be a better choice. Did you look at that at all in the tunnel Ollie? The UCI (our friends?) banned fairings. In a copy of cycling + magazine more than 20 years ago I saw a photo taken in the 1920s of a bike with what was called a torpielle (it was in french) faining made of papier mache mounted behind the saddle with struts from the rear drop outs. An ordinary rider was faster with this than an elite rider without. The UCI responded by banning fairings. The Motor cycle racers (FIM?) banned dustbin fairings in the 50s because they were too fast. I seem to remember the UCI banned clothing (I think it was colloquially called a batman suit) that inflated to produce a fairing on your back. Of course camel-backs inside the jersey are banned for raod racing. Your saddle with the built in bum-stop (thats what motor bikers call them) might make mounting your bike (getting a leg over?) more difficult. Why not make wide aero rims for fat gravel tyres? Gravel, of course, is slower so with the cube law the benefit is less obvious though still there. As a last bit, a number of years ago I had high vis tabard. I attached net pockets front and rear (very handy for sunglasses maps amd snacks). When I filled them with inflated bags as balloons (the bags from empty wine boxes!), front and rear fairings, I was noticeably faster. Useful commuting in winter. But let's remember "the UCI has no juristiction here!" I liked your bike Alex, don't let Ollie bully you. I wish I could have a SUPER NICE bike like that.
I use a fanny pack mainly cuz it's automatically transferred from one bike to another, but for gravel racing just the behind the stem toptube bikepacker box/bag. It's much easier to access while riding & surly have a much more advantageous aero profile .
How about not using any bags at all on your bike but only jersey pockets? Nobody would strap bags on their running shoes, walking poles, cross country skis or any kind of sporting equipment.
27:20 Ollie, the disappointment carries over from Bertrand's new bike intro video: he had the nerve to use a STICK on his new bike! I was shocked and flabbergasted.

#askgcntech the bag under the saddle making you faster is quite the discovery, I am so impressed tbh, never heard of that until this video. What about using a basket in a bar? And what about using a "thin" bag under the top bar of the frame?
I place my bar bag at top of the handle bar instead of under, to be able to do that I have handle bar extension. I found out it more aero, because I think lower part of your bike will have more dragged effect than the your upper. I think most of the time you push the wind dragged downward than upwards.
Jersey pockets, bar bag, and bag on top of top tube are the easiest place to pull out snacks while riding. Frame bag and saddle bag, nope, gotta stop to take things out.

I can imagine he doesn't give a shit about aerodynamics of his bike when training. Due to changing attitudes of sponsors, pros used to never even train on deep section wheels because they didn't care and the shallow wheels rode better.
A lot of the aero discussion is on topics that the HPV / recumbent community has been working on for decades. Tail fairings work extremely well, and many HPVs are more important than front fairings. As for handlebar bags, Jan Heine over at Bicycle Quarterly has observed that the bag can, in some circumstances, act as a fairing if you tuck down low enough, but overall is definitely a penalty. The flip side is that it allows you to keep calories easily accessible so you don’t need to stop to eat, as you likely would with a tail bag. It’s all trade offs. Great discussion, and it’s great to an emphasis on body position over anything else. I really think that if riders want to get more aero the first accessory they should get is a Pitot tube.
@Burton Hohman I do too unless I'm fairly upright and I'm on my mountain bike. But the gains from that bag were significant. I'd probably tough it out for a shorter gravel race but it would kill my jacked up neck on a long race
Decathlon providing bikes to the pro peleton is nothing new. They were a bike sponsor to one of the pro teams (AG2R) providing 'Decathlon' badged bikes 17 years ago.
Ah come on that photo of Skipper was in training, he did use an aero helmet during the race (IM Texas). He still managed to go the wrong way because he probably couldn't see where he was going, but that's another story...

Great discussion, and it’s great to an emphasis on body position over anything else. I really think that if riders want to get more aero the first accessory they should get is a Pitot tube.
Dylan Johnson tested bags too. His results showed the fastest bag is a frame bag.
I hate those bags cause then where do you put your water?
Wrong. The fastest was the large saddle bag. Look again.
@Burton Hohman he uses a hydration pack which also made him faster.
@@veganpotterthevegan ugh I hate wearing anything on my back when riding though so I’ll deal with the slight time penalty
@Burton Hohman I do too unless I'm fairly upright and I'm on my mountain bike. But the gains from that bag were significant. I'd probably tough it out for a shorter gravel race but it would kill my jacked up neck on a long race
Please please please send Ollie on a gravel ride to NZ...
A gravel bike with oval chainrings to NZ?
I feel like my Specialized/Fjällräven Bar Bag is under attack 😅. I actually scrunch up behind the bar bag when going down hills at least.
Bearded, hairy legs, saddle bags, and bar bag. I am so slow, I am basically going backwards.
Add in an unzipped, size too big rain jacket when it's not raining and you might go backwards👍
Decathlon providing bikes to the pro peleton is nothing new. They were a bike sponsor to one of the pro teams (AG2R) providing 'Decathlon' badged bikes 17 years ago.
Ollie roasting Alfanse for his Bike Vault entry, was the highlight of this video!
Ah come on that photo of Skipper was in training, he did use an aero helmet during the race (IM Texas).
He still managed to go the wrong way because he probably couldn't see where he was going, but that's another story...
😂😂😂
Yeah, the aero helmet caused him to LOSE 12 minutes .... by going the wrong way.
Alex? Bike is beautiful, but no shadow stand that near to the water!!!
Decathlon is a no go because of the whole Auchan group is still present on Russian market. Forgot they ever existed..
"frozen by a witch" - still LMAO
Good aero chat boys!
Just wondering if a frame bag would be more aero for Connor’s ride? He still has easy access to the donuts and it will fill in the frame gap?
Also would a saddle bag on a TT bike be faster? Can you test please? 🤔
Trying to follow aero advice re stuffing something down the front of your jersey. Now it's warm a enough to dump my puffer jacket I am trying placing an empty plastic 1ltr low calorie tonic bottle in the suggested position but am unsure which way up or down the tapered end should point, so advice pls and perhaps evidenced at next Silverstone visit.
I have to think a properly shaped bar bag would be faster. You only tested some very un-aero shaped bags
I had bar, top tube and saddle bag for the Reiver, but only because my best option of a frame bag didn't fit my new bike.
How does Ollie not have a Lamborghini after being a Pro?
Man, Ollie it getting hardcore and ultra picky on the bike judging; I'm afraid to submit my awesome gravel bike now...:) At least he had the sense to drool over that Lab 71...
I didn't notice any slow down with the bar bag. Maybe because I'm already the slowest senior citizen in the Escarpment on weekends.
Damn Ollie bringing down the hammer on Zack's bike. Hope there's no beef between the two
Don’t disappoint Ollie. I’m going to be extra good today just in case he’s watching.
This obsession with speed and aerodynamics for non-competitive cycling is getting a bit much now, guys, you're almost as bad a weight weenies.
Ollie was buzzing in this episode. How many coffees had he consumed??? ☕️☕️☕️😲
It'd be lovely to test packed Cargo (Rapha, not MTB) Shorts, against a handle bar bag.
pidcock has an M2 Comp? excellent. love that you guys are into cars, i'm a longtime BMW guy myself. ollie, do i remember that you have/had an F31?
